AIBU Re DD bday?

This is more advice I need - apologies.

DD 17 bday in a week.

Am v proud of her, has two jobs and at college.

She is saving up for a car and is going abroad with a friend in Nov - I have said I will pay to renew her passport.

She has never flown before and is v excited (as has always wanted to fly but have bought 3 up alone and have always camped here or abroad so driven not flown) although I am a bit Sad that I won't get your share this with her and she was a bit Sad too.

WIBU to fly somewhere (domestic) with her on her bday and take her for lunch or is that silly - and if so where?

We are SW England.

She has no ID either and her passport is out of date.

I flew loads with DS1 when he was little but missed out on this with DS2 as his dad and SM took him to Asia.

Sounds a lovely idea, but I'm not sure how it would work without ID or a passport, unless you could do a helicopter ride or similar.

I think though that she will need some sort of ID to get on even an internal flight. Presumably her birth certificate would do? Although that is not photo ID.

Try sky scanner for flight ideas but book direct!! Gives an idea of daily flights

You don't need a passport for internal flights - but you do need ID provisional licence or drivers licence etc - check with the airline

You do need photo ID even for internal flights, especially with all the heightened security. But if you can swing it, go to Edinburgh. Book now and you should get a great deal on flights.

Southampton - Newcastle or Edinburgh with Flybe can be affordable if you book early. Not very exciting but no passport needed.

You'll need some photo ID before she can fly. Provisional license would be fine if she doesn't have a passport.

There are plenty of places to fly - Manchester (Trafford Center and a show, maybe), London, Birmingham, Edinburgh, Glasgow? They're all easy to get to and have plenty to do for a couple of days.

Sounds like a lovely idea!

Ds flew to Jersey without any ID but the adults in the party (teachers) had to have ID. I don't know whether it's 16 or 18 where you have to carry ID

You can use an out of date passport for UK flight as ID.

You need a passport for internal easyjet flight - you shouldn't but they insist and will refuse you boarding at the gate without it.

Belfast- go see the Titanic exhibition and have lunch there. But do check whether you need a passport.

It's children under 16 for no ID. An out of date passport of up to 2 years is acceptable.

Could you not get her passport now? Tell her you want to do it well in advance of her trip in case there are any problems.

And then definitely yes - I'd recommend Edinburgh or Manchester

Honestly...I think it's a bit silly. I understand your reasoning, but as she becomes an adult there are going to be lots of 'firsts' she experiences alone that you don't get to do with her...that doesn't mean she won't share them with you, or that you will be any less close with her.

Even if you do do this, she is still going to be having her first holiday abroad, and her first holiday with friends...both without you. I don't see why 'first flight' is more significant.

Perhaps this is me, but I see a flight as just another (albeit convenient) form of transport, like a train or car...not as a birthday treat.

Of course I don't know your daughter and you do - perhaps she will think this is a lovely idea. Or...will she think (as I would have at 18) "Flying to go somewhere for just a few hours we could easily get to by train/car is a bit random mum, I'd much rather have gone for a meal out locally and still had a lovely time with you, and had the £100 (or whatever 2 internal flights would cost) to spend." (or towards a present she can keep for a while and always remember her mum got it for her 17th, like a nice bag/piece of jewellery.)

You and your daughter sound lovely though and I'm sure whatever you decide she'll have a lovely 17th.

Ah you said in a week. Cant you go the week after? And tell her on her bday, then she'll have a week or so to be very excited and plan what you will do there together?
