AIBU Re DD bday?

Cutecat78 · 31/07/2016 19:54

This is more advice I need - apologies.

DD 17 bday in a week.

Am v proud of her, has two jobs and at college.

She is saving up for a car and is going abroad with a friend in Nov - I have said I will pay to renew her passport.

She has never flown before and is v excited (as has always wanted to fly but have bought 3 up alone and have always camped here or abroad so driven not flown) although I am a bit Sad that I won't get your share this with her and she was a bit Sad too.

WIBU to fly somewhere (domestic) with her on her bday and take her for lunch or is that silly - and if so where?

We are SW England.

She has no ID either and her passport is out of date.

I flew loads with DS1 when he was little but missed out on this with DS2 as his dad and SM took him to Asia.

WWYD?

She's already had a holiday with her mates alone in Brighton Grin

She has always just had this "thing" about flying and we have this joke that she "flew" in my belly NZ to UK Grin

What about going up to the Edinburgh Festival?

FoofFighter · 31/07/2016 20:25

citizen card.

Running am v concerned at what you have said there as have booked to fly internal with easyjet in Oct with a citizen card which they say on their website they accept.

ample · 31/07/2016 20:27

Lovely idea. What a star mum you are for wanting to share with her.
London...Glasgow. Both great places for shopping imo!
Hope you manage to sort something out, even if it's after the birthday itself.

LockedOutOfMN · 31/07/2016 20:36

Fooffighter I thought that you need a passport to fly on all Easyjet flights, regardless of the destination, i.e. including internal. But if their website says otherwise then don't worry.

LockedOutOfMN · 31/07/2016 20:38

OP, I'd recommend Guernsey.

TeenAndTween · 31/07/2016 20:43

locked I was just about to recommend day trip to Jersey.

Don't know how available/cheap flights will be this time of year though.

foursillybeans · 31/07/2016 20:47

That's a great idea and I would do the same. Where would depend on what you both enjoy. I always fancied getting a flight to Edinburgh for a few days.

allowlsthinkalot · 31/07/2016 20:47

If you're using an expired passport, email the airline and get confirmation that it's ok as ID then print off the email. When I've done this it's been ok but when I didn't they wouldn't let me board the flight!

FoofFighter · 31/07/2016 20:56

Edinburgh would be good, the tram link is right there and goes directly into the city centre.

(Have triple checked easyjet's advice yet again and it does say citizen cards accepted among other things for internal flights)

FoofFighter · 31/07/2016 20:56

and expired passport with them is upto 5 years.

oldmums · 31/07/2016 21:00

see if she could use photo id from college, also ask travel agent if that would do.

Aus26 · 31/07/2016 21:03

I fly from Glasgow to London regularly on both easyjet and BA. Easyjet checks ID as you are boarding, BA doesn't. Though not to say that the one time you really need them not to check they do.

If you do go ahead and book something, might want to call the airline before you book flights to make sure you are clear on ID policy.

FWIW, I'm biased, but Glasgow is a great idea. Edinburgh lovely too, but with the festival in August I'm not sure you'll be able to find flights on the cheap.

Mouikey · 31/07/2016 21:16

Belfast - can Flybe direct, go to titanic (amazing) and lunch in the city. Check with individual airline about ID for internal flights.

Zogthebiggestdragon · 31/07/2016 21:27

My husband flies a lot and says that Southampton airport is very fast to get through (from parking to check in to plane), so if you're between two airports consider that as a factor - even if you got very cheap flights from Heathrow, for example, I wouldn't bother as you would add so much time and hassle on both flights.

I live in Edinburgh and love Glasgow so would recommend either! Glasgow is maybe a bit more for shoppers and Edinburgh (especially in the festival ) for walking about, culture, history etc. So go with what would make her happiest! It sounds like a lovely idea, hope it goes well.

April241 · 31/07/2016 21:36

I live near Glasgow and work there, it's good if you've never been before - I love Edinburgh too but would also really recommend Belfast. Call up the airlines about the passport, Easyjet, FlyBe and BA allow you to use an expired passport as long as it's within 2 years of the expiry date as per their online guidelines. Enjoy!!!

blondieblondie · 31/07/2016 21:37

I think it's a lovely idea. I flew to London for my first ever flight for my 16th birthday to visit my aunt. But I was on my own and chaperoned, so I was actually a bit nervous, and a bit embarrassed probably, looking back.

EllieHandMeDownBaby · 31/07/2016 22:02

Fab idea! Hop over to Jersey if you can. It's only 30mins from Southampton and the airport is really easy as someone else mentioned. You can have lunch on the waterfront, peruse some shops, then head home.
Happy birthday to your daughter for the day! Flowers

meridithssister · 31/07/2016 22:04

Another vote here for Southampton to Belfast.

Runningbutnotscared · 01/08/2016 07:08

foof I honestly don't know about whether easyjet accept a citizen card, but I can tell you from my experience of trying to get on a Glasgow to London flight with photo ID that isn't a passport and being stopped at the gate (my driving license was not accepted).
......perhaps if I had checked the website like you have done it wouldn't have been quite so much of a disaster trip.

healthyheart · 01/08/2016 08:26

Belfast or Dublin.

JustHappy3 · 01/08/2016 08:34

Why don't you do a pleasure flight from Southampton airport. It'd be a little plane but a real flying experience she'd remember for a long time!

hollyisalovelyname · 01/08/2016 10:14

HealthyHeart you'd probably need a passport for Dublin as it's not part of the U.K. whereas Belfast is.

logosthecat · 01/08/2016 10:18

What a lovely idea!

I would fly somewhere further away than London. Not that London isn't awesome, but by the time you've been through security and all that unromantic stuff that goes with air travel these days, you might want to feel that you're landing somewhere a bit more different that you couldn't reach by rail. Edinburgh is at least a different country (and the opposite end, and beautiful!).

hollyisalovelyname · 01/08/2016 17:47

OP will you come back and tell us where you went.
