I love my slow cooker when I first got it made stews as I hadn't a clue what else I could make however since then I found out you can make loads

Most people either don't no how to use it or don't really know what you can make

I have make fudge in mine

Chicken wrapped in backed stuffed with cream cheese on a bed of leeks

Also make cakes in mine often it's so moist

I envy you slow cooker aficionados. I've bought and eventually got rid of three slow cookers over the years as I just didn't see any benefit. Whatever I made was watery and tastelessConfused

sashh · 29/07/2016 05:42

Am I missing something fabulous??

If you like lamb shoulder yes.

Just bung it in the SC on high -all the fatty streaks melt and baste the meat which remains pink.

WorldsBiggestGrotbag · 29/07/2016 06:16

I don't like them because I don't like slow cooked food. I like crisp, fresh salad and veg, and rare meat.

TheKitchenWitch · 29/07/2016 06:22

After reading many complaints about watery tasteless stews, I saw it as having to actually learn how to cook in the sc when I got mine.
Best thing ever.
I do loads in it, basically anything that has a sauce of any kind - Chinese style dishes are amazing, as are all curries, Bolognese, shepherds pie, chili, etc.
It's also revolutionised BBQ meat for us - put the seasoned chicken thighs in the sc and cook, then just grill for crispness on the BBQ. Fabulous tasty meat, not at all dry, perfectly done.
Ratatouille in the sc is also amazing, not at all mushy. But obviously you don't cook it for 6 hours.

WaitrosePigeon · 29/07/2016 07:20

The one thing I do the most is stick a whole chicken in it, on low for 6hours.

One of the most disgusting experiences of my life

PosiePootlePerkins · 29/07/2016 07:31

Mine has sat in the cupboard for 3 years. Anyone want a freebie?Grin

TisIthecat · 29/07/2016 07:33

Any advice for vegetarians? We find most recipes are great and need 4-6 hours cooking. When we're out of the house from 8-6 dinner is generally ruined. What are we doing wrong?

NerrSnerr · 29/07/2016 07:40

I use mine quite a lot, usually to make chilli or curry. I'm not sure why the OP cares whether other people use them though?

QuiteLikely5 · 29/07/2016 07:48

People often use far too much water and not enough ingredient to thicken the water.

My SC is used to cook a cheap cut of beef on a Sunday, comes out nice and soft and makes it edible for the kids who don't like to chew forever on a piece of meat.

TitaniasTits · 29/07/2016 07:50

I think people who like slow cookers just don't really like cooking.

NerrSnerr · 29/07/2016 07:58

Tit I would agree with that. I hate cooking. My husband does most of the cooking but I use the slow cooker because I can't be arsed by teatime.

Trills · 29/07/2016 08:06

Stir with a metal or silicon spoon every 15 minutes until melted and turn setting down to low and continue to stir every 15 mins Until firm

What happens if you stir with a wooden spoon'?

Cheby · 29/07/2016 08:11

The best thing about slow cookers is the Facebook groups. So.much.drama. 😂

Things that look absolutely disgusting in slow cookers:
Any recipe that calls for a box of cake mix

Actually any cake in a slow cooker. Ugh.

Anything that uses frozen mashed potato. Utterly utterly grim (I once saw someone post an attempt at a fish pie; frozen fish mixed bag, frozen peas topped with frozen mash pellets. Unsurprisingly it wasn't pleasant!).

Omelette or eggs of any sort (and for fucks sake why? It takes 2nminutes in a pan but people cook them overnight for breakfast!).

Jacket potatoes.

Things I think work:
Stews
Red cabbage
Soup

TitaniasTits · 29/07/2016 08:13

NerSnerr, I love cooking a nice meal after a long day - I find it relaxing. I pour a glass of wine, stick something funny on the radio and enjoy the process of chopping, stirring, browning, tasting, seasoning etc. Slow cooker cooking - just dump it in and leave it - takes all the fun out of it for me.

trafalgargal · 29/07/2016 08:18

Bit of butter and salt rubbed into the skin and chickens definitely have crispy skins in a slow cooker. That apart I'm not a great fan , I prefer casseroles done in the oven much tastier.

HapShawl · 29/07/2016 08:47

I use the slow cooker for very specific things, and you need to reduce the amount of liquid you would put in for a normal oven. It's not a timesaver though - you just defer the prep time to when it's more convenient. I prep the night before, put in fridge, then into slow cooker in the morning (or cook overnight).

I don't enjoy cooking, but I do enjoy eating good food, and the things I make in the slow cooker are delicious because I know that they work better cooked that way!

BarbaraofSeville · 29/07/2016 08:53

I don't have a slow cooker and don't want one because my appliance garage is full of breadmaker, blenders, rice cooker etc, but I do like slow cooked pork or lamb very much and ha big pans and an oven that can be set from 30 C upwards so would use this instead. Can anyone link or suggest what temperature high and low on a slow cooker might equate to?

19lottie82 · 29/07/2016 08:54

Made a lasagne in mine last week and it was lush!

Why make soup in a slow cooker when you can make it in 20 minutes in a soupmaker?

Or ten mins in a saucepanWink

Mov1ngOn · 29/07/2016 09:04

What on earth is a soup maker?!

I struggle with the whole keeping hot and low temperatures and how on earth it works.

NashvilleQueen · 29/07/2016 09:12

I also love cooking and struggle with slow cookers so there's definitely an issue there. If I'm cooking I can taste along the way and adjust seasoning etc. If I use a SC because I'm going to work I'm literally running about throwing stuff in and hoping for the best when I walk back through the door. It's ok for a piece of meat I suppose but other than that it stands abandoned and unloved.

99GBPChargeToUseMyPostsJournos · 29/07/2016 09:18

I have a slow cooker and a pressure cooker.

The pressure cooker gets used. The slow cooker is getting binned. Things taste so much better from the pressure cooker.

ChicRock · 29/07/2016 10:43

My DH job involves him visiting rendering companies. Chicken in the slow cooker (apart from being revolting in texture) smells exactly like boiled horse and cow bones apparently. I did it once and the smell actually made him heave.

Sallystyle · 29/07/2016 10:54

I can cook a chicken in my IP in 35 minutes.

A big beef roast in around 75m but it is the most tender and tastiest bit of beef you will ever try.

Why cook meat in the slow cooker for hours and hours when you can put it in a pressure cooker for a fraction of the time and have it just as tender and tastes a lot nicer?

Sallystyle · 29/07/2016 10:55

And you can even saute the meat in the IP's pan to make it crispy!
