How do you make a cake though OP? And what type of cake?

Wolfiefan · 28/07/2016 21:46

I use mine much more now I'm not working. After school time is mad busy and we often have clubs and swimming etc. Drop kids at school. Start dinner. Job done. Time after school to do clubs, sort HW and get to appointments etc.
DH working late? Set slow cooker going at lunchtime. No cooking once kids fed and asleep.

TheUnsullied · 28/07/2016 21:50

Just because I already have a slow cooker Fairy and barring the blending at the end, I just chuck stuff in and ignore it until I want it (not at 8am!). Without the SC I'd just do it in a pan Grin

I do this face though Hmm when I see posts in the slow cooker groups about cooking stuff in them that really shouldn't be slow cooked or actually takes roughly 3 minutes to cook the traditional way. What the shit is convenient about taking 3 hours to cook an omelet??

HerRoyalNotness · 28/07/2016 21:51

I got rid of mine. All the meat came out this awful, grainy kind of texture. Whole chickens included.

RortyCrankle · 28/07/2016 22:07

They are crap - everything tastes the same.

SpareHead3 · 28/07/2016 22:08

I boil socks in mine. After six hours you can either eat them or wear them. Win win.

They're OK and helpful and I do love my ancient SC (complete with replacement knob from the camping stove cos the original one fell off) but tbh I still do prefer things cooked in the oven. Even slow cooked in the oven is somehow better.

LadyPenelope68 · 28/07/2016 22:09

I've tried numerous recipes for a wide variety of things in mine and they were all absolutely ......... disgusting!

Sallystyle · 28/07/2016 22:12

They are crap.

I now use my instant pot a lot.

If you want things done quickly, something you can time to be finished when you get home, and get food that tastes even bette, then a pressure cooker is the way to go.

I didn't quite realise how crap slow cookers are until I got my IP.

megletthesecond · 28/07/2016 22:13

I can't see the point in them if you're vegetarian. I find it easy to batch cook veggie meals and freeze them in portions.

winewolfhowls · 28/07/2016 22:14

It's the wrong season for slow cooking. Come back when it's chilly out.Grin

PortiaCastis · 28/07/2016 22:16

Not a fan of my slow cooker I do make a stew in it during winter, added socks enhance the taste I must say.

GinandJag · 28/07/2016 22:18

I have just bought an Instant Pot and so far with 100% success.

LauraAshleyDuvetCover · 28/07/2016 22:21

MrsTumble the group I was in on Facebook are big advocates of a packet of cake mix and a tin of lemonade/coke/ginger beer Hmm

I do like mine, but by the time I've seared the meat, made a gravy etc it's not that much more convenient. Very handy in a student house though, I must admit - you can't really annexe the oven for three hours for a casserole.

AtSea1979 · 28/07/2016 22:29

OP can you post your best cake recipe. Do you use a cake tin or glass bowl? Is there water in the slow cooker? Like steamed in glass bowl?

DeltaSunrise · 28/07/2016 22:29

They are crap - everything tastes the same.

And that there proves op's point.

If everything tastes the same, you are not using it right.

The one thing I do the most is stick a whole chicken in it, on low for 6hours. Once it's cooked, it all gets shredded and put in the fridge, it's there then for sandwiches, salads, omelettes, pasta etc through the week which makes getting dinner on the table for the kids easy when you have only walked through the door at 6.30pm.

Lovely curries, pulled pork, balsamic beef, bolognese, soups, BBQ ribs, chilli, casseroles. Put on in morning and have a lovely dinner ready by the time I get home from work.

Love my slow cooker.

ginghamstarfish · 28/07/2016 22:45

Love mine too, for curries, whole chicken, gammon and lentil soup, rice pudding, bread and butter pudding to name a few favourites. I do not sear or brown anything first, seems to work fine without.

Fluffypockets · 28/07/2016 22:55

I adore my slow cooker! Can't remember ever having cooked anything in it, but it's the most perfect thing for mulling wine Smile

TiggyOBE · 29/07/2016 00:04

use legs for jerk chicken

And to think all this time I've been using my hands.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 29/07/2016 00:16

Whole chicken slow cooked? THE POINT OF CHICKEN IS THE CRISPY SKIN. Confirms my view they are for people who don't like food.

Lucked · 29/07/2016 00:17

I used mine on mat leave when I could do the prep in the morning and get the timings right.

Now I work full time I only use it occasionally for pulled pork at weekends. Far to much effort to do the prep before work whilst dressing a preschooler and a toddler and mine doesn't have a timer so have to set one at the plug -faff.

DeltaSunrise · 29/07/2016 00:27

Hey, if I'm doing a roast, I do the chicken properly, I ain't one to go without my crispy skin, but like I said, for easy shredding and using in quick meals, the slow cooker is great.

Linnet · 29/07/2016 00:31

I use my slow cooker for cooking chicken. I put chicken breasts in with stock leave to cook for about 4-5 hours then shred. Keeps in the fridge for a few days to put into what ever you want, enchiladas, sandwiches, curry, salad etc.

I have also done stew and a lovely mexican chicken chilli. I don't use it as much as I thought I would though. I found a lot of recipes for soup but to be honest soup only takes 20 minutes so I just make it on the hob.

They are great for Xmas and New Years Day.

As the designated sober person m normally up early so grill bacon and sausages, chuck in slow cooker to stay warm. Leave Baps and sauce and the Alka Seltzer, at the side and let people help themselves as they stagger into the kitchen in intervals in various states of pain.

TheClaws · 29/07/2016 04:29

The slow cooker is the best way to cook roast lamb, hands down. It's just perfect. And the bonus is you get lovely stock to keep after that. I also do a gorgeous honey soy chicken dish - good dash of honey, tamari sauce, soy sauce, garlic, sweet chilli sauce, and some chicken stock powder. Mix this together then combine with chicken thighs. Cook on low. Thicken a little with cornflour before serving if it needs it. Trust me - it's lovely Smile

I cook far more things in the SC than maybe I should...
