Veggie wedding question

RoseRuby26 · 28/07/2016 18:49

We are currently mid last minute wedding plans. In the evening we are having a 7 piece buffet for guests. Day guests will have had 3 course dinner but for evening guests this will be their only food. We have a choice of about 20 delicious items but cannot come to a decision about how many items out of the 7 should be veggie. Partner thinks 2 out of 7 should be veggie. I would rather 3 or 4 veggie items as 2 items of food e.g. a couple of veggie samosas and a Halloumi skewer is not enough for vegetarians and meat eaters will surely eat veggies foods too. He is a big meat eater and is making a fuss. There are likely to be about 10 vegetarians out of 150 guests. AIBU?

Kitkats are vegetarian

Pengweng · 29/07/2016 10:50

I would go for 5 veggie options and 2 meat. To be honest I'm a big meat eater but would happily eat everything you have listed.
Def let the veggies have first dibs and assign someone sensible who won't be shitfaced by then to give them a heads up that it's coming out.

SuburbanRhonda · 29/07/2016 10:59

I suppose I hear so many vegetarians going on about animal rights and welfare and they eat cheese and eggs .... as if the animals kept for those purposes are any better off than for meat.

Well, this old chestnut came up a lot quicker than it normally does on threads like this.

socksey, I think you need to widen your social circle. It seems to contain far too many bacon-eating, banner-waving vegetarians than is good for you Grin

pinkyredrose · 29/07/2016 12:16

Even if everyone was a eat eater I'd still say 2/7 options being veggie is way too little. Four at least would be the minimum. I think most people would want a variety not just a plate of meat?

pinkyredrose · 29/07/2016 12:17

Meat eater obs not eat eater!Grin

MidniteScribbler · 29/07/2016 12:24

I'd do 3 vegetarian, 3 meat and the prawns (but that's because I love prawns).

Aside from your selections, please make sure that there is plenty of each item. There's nothing worse than the people who park themselves next to the kitchen exit waiting for the platters to come out and then by the time it gets to the other side of the room, there is not enough for everyone. Assume that there are a good portion of the people in that room that are going to eat at least double the recommended portion of items per person and well and truly over cater to ensure everyone gets enough food (vegetarian or not).

KindDogsTail · 29/07/2016 13:15

One thing that is true, as Pengweng said, is that the meat eaters will eat the vegetarian options too, so they could disappear before the 10 vegetarians get to them! That is why it helps to have a lot.

Just don't do an all veggie one! Two veggie weddings - both times myself and the group I was with were left starving. The last time it happened we made sure to go to the pub before the wedding for some decent food and had a cheeky pizza back at the hotel.

Oh, and make sure there is plenty of food - there was only enough at one wedding for half a plate of salad, two fake mini-sausage rolls and a cheese thing. That was the entire meal not just an evening buffet!

Looking at your options (which are much better than veggie options given in the past) I would do 3 meat, 3 veggie and 1 fish but also ask for some bread sticks or similar to soak up the booze.

You had that as a sit-down meal? How odd.

LagunaBubbles · 29/07/2016 15:37

Everybody loves veg dishes, right?

Er no, why would you assume that. Everyone will have different tastes.

OP you sound really considerate, if you can only choose 7 I would do 3 of each plus the prawns. Sausages and sausage rolls always go down well. Its a shame you cant have everything, I love a good buffet!

gonzo155 · 29/07/2016 16:08

Yes, suburban that was the wedding breakfast. I think the idea was to cut costs for the couple, which was fine, except we were all hungry and hadn't be made aware that a small buffet was all we'd get.

Chattymummyhere · 29/07/2016 17:13

3 meat, 3 vegi and 1 fish option.

Out of the vegi options I would only be able to eat the samosas and potatoe skins.

It's only a fugue Buffett at 8pm everyone should of had dinner before so it's only a snack.

Chattymummyhere · 29/07/2016 17:14

Finger not fugue Buffett stupid phone

JellyBelly89 · 29/07/2016 17:41

I would do 4.

My venue do vegetarians a separate buffet plate per person, could be worth asking for if there aren't many? Otherwise they said often meat eaters eat a lot of the veggie stuff before the vegetarians can get there to grab it.

SheDoneAlreadyDoneHadHerses · 29/07/2016 18:23

I'd do either 5 or 6 veggie options because, even as an omni, your selection of veggies is really really tasty sounding!

About to out myself here, but I went to a place that did a sandwich buffet and the veggie option was guacamole on cheap white bread.

Loafingaround · 29/07/2016 18:52

OP Im veggie and would go for-
risotto balls
potato skins
halloumi skewers
samosas.

Its a yummy, contrasting selection and stills seems very classy/wedding appropriate. Nachos are fab but would soon get into a complete mess on the serving plates and just look a bit cheap.

squizita · 31/07/2016 20:20

We had a similar do abd went for 5 out of 8 items. We had a few halal, kosher, no red meat and vegetarian guests and as PP have said the meaties enjoy a cheese sandwich the same as the veggies so no need for anyone to feel left out!

We also had a veggie based first course to make menu planning easier. People enjoyed it (it was a mozzarella salad wit lots of crusty bread and oil).

The only person we had to ask specially for was someone with very particular allergies. They got fed too - with some thing nice of course.

squizita · 31/07/2016 20:23

We had: veggie sandwich selection (cheese/egg/cucumber and cream cheese), samosas, crudetes and dips, veggie spring rolls, cheese on cracker canapés and a couple of cheese boards at the end of the buffet. The cheese boards went almost instantly!

squizita · 31/07/2016 20:23

Oh sorry and wedges.

squizita · 31/07/2016 20:35

...Sorry drip feeding. This was a buffet after a meal (mozzarella starter, chicken or veggie lasagne main tbh the lasagne was bigger than the chicken si ignore anyone who equates veggie meals with hunger and chocolate brownie pudding).

ample · 31/07/2016 20:36

Veggie here too. 2 out of 7? Confused

4 (even 5) choices minimum. That way both meat eaters and veggies have more than a few choices, and hopefully won't go hungry.

Chewbecca · 31/07/2016 20:37

My choice:

Peking duck spring rolls
Cajun chicken pieces
Honey glazed cocktail sausage
French bread sandwiches (assorted)
Cracked black pepper potato skins
Halloumi cheese skewers
Mini vegetable samosas

LockedOutOfMN · 31/07/2016 20:41

As other posters have said, I think 5 vegetarian out of 7 is best as lots of the vegetarian dishes are popular with everyone.

I'd choose: French bread sandwiches
Cracked black pepper potato skins (these sound AMAZING)
Hot and cheesy nachos and dips
Halloumi cheese skewers
Mini vegetable samosas

UnexpectedBaggage · 31/07/2016 20:46

There will be only 10 veggies and 140 carnies so I'd say 3/4 split would be enough.

MrsJoeyMaynard · 31/07/2016 20:57

I would suggest labelling the food too, if it's unclear from looking at it what it is.

I was at a party the other night, with buffet.

There were loads of things on the buffet where it was unclear what exactly it was - random curry / casserole, sandwiches with random stuff mixed in mayonnaise filling, a variety of pastry rolls / pasties where you couldn't see the fillings.

I can be a bit picky about food, but I don't have any special dietary requirements, so not a disaster if I accidentally picked up a meaty pasty instead of a veggie one, but I was thinking that it must have been difficult knowing what's safe to pick for someone who was a vegetarian or had other dietary requirements.
