AIBU?

Veggie wedding question

We are currently mid last minute wedding plans. In the evening we are having a 7 piece buffet for guests. Day guests will have had 3 course dinner but for evening guests this will be their only food. We have a choice of about 20 delicious items but cannot come to a decision about how many items out of the 7 should be veggie. Partner thinks 2 out of 7 should be veggie. I would rather 3 or 4 veggie items as 2 items of food e.g. a couple of veggie samosas and a Halloumi skewer is not enough for vegetarians and meat eaters will surely eat veggies foods too. He is a big meat eater and is making a fuss. There are likely to be about 10 vegetarians out of 150 guests. AIBU?

If you are going for 4 'vegetarian' options, I would definitely include the prawns.... as that will be appreciated by most of the 140 non-vegetarians present. ... the potato skins look like a side and would be appreciated by everyone.... are the 'vegetarians' coming real vegetarians or do they eat all sorts of animals and their products (chicken, fish (neither of which are vegetables, contact to popular opinion), eggs, cheese etc)? You are catering to 10 vegetarian and 140 non vegetarians and also remember that a lot of adults have problems digesting cheese so a menu with too much of that won't be ideal either.

You mean "meat" options, obviously.

Rhonda - Get over the prawns.

Prawns aren't vegetarian though, neither is any other sort of fish.

Can I come to your wedding? I'm veggie and think 3 options is a good balance but 2 is fairly limited. On the other hand the veggie options sound delicious so I'd probably choose more than 3 even if I wasn't veggie! Nachos, Halluomi, Brie, Potato Skins...

Always one to buck the trend I hate veggie food and would never eat it. But then you can't please everyone Smile

So every item of food you eat contains meat then red?

Personally I would end up with everyone falling out with me as I walk of with the platter of samosas. Yum. Grin

You did notice that the prawns were in the last of vegetarian options??
It seems a large number of vegetarians think fish and chicken are vegetables....
However, with 140 non-vegetarians and only 10 potential vegetarians then my vegetarian choices would be geared towards the omnivores, while making sure that there were a few options for actual vegetarians, which don't include animal products. ..
BTW. .. I'm not a vegetarian but I know a lot who are and eat less veg than me and seem to think nothing of eating chicken or fish. ... or eggs and cheese

No but I don't eat any type of vegetables whatsoever. Kind of rules out a lot of vegetarian dishes Hmm

socks I'm not sure why you think vegetarians don't eat eggs or cheese. Are you thinking of vegans?
I'm with you in vegetarians eating chicken and fish beibg wrong (although I do know quite a few self defined "vegetarians" who eat fish).

Whatever happens, it will be better than the wedding I attended in Cornwall - from The North.
Invited to the service and the evening do but not the afternoon.
No food. Or drink. For people who had done a 16hr round trip and gone to the expense of a hotel.
Still slightly bitter several years on...
And am a veggie. Who loves wedges.

I agree that prawn/fish is animal product and it's technically pescatarian but I'm sure that all of the day guest veggies (about 6) eat fish. Prawn could be a good choice although I'm not a fan myself.

Socksey - just to be clear (so we're all on the same page) your friends that eat chicken and fish aren't vegetarian. Your friends that eat eggs and cheese might be but just aren't vegan. For future reference;

  • Pescetarians eat fish but no other meat
  • Vegetarians eat no meat (inc fish & chicken)
  • Vegans eat no meat, fish, eggs, cheese or other animal products like honey etc.

I'm only coming if you make the 4 veggie options

1 samosas

2 samosas

3 samosas

4 vodka

I suppose I hear so many vegetarians going on about animal rights and welfare and they eat cheese and eggs .... as if the animals kept for those purposes are any better off than for meat..... so I suppose I get fed up of them, especially as many also wear leather shoes ( obviously animals don't die for that or are only the ones who have lived long and happy lives before dying of natural causes)
I am quite well aware of vegans as well as the various types of pseudo vegetarian. I am well used to these telling me about the cruelty of eating meat as they tuck into their quiches and I have very little time for the double standards. If they want to be fussy and not eat red meat, fair enough, but call it that and not try to put some other label on it. You would be amazed at how many vegetarians, who supposedly eat not meat, will happily sneak some crispy bacon or have the gravy from a roast dinner, even when something else has been provided for them.
Vegans, I have much more time for as they are not trying to represent themselves as something they're not.
Obviously the sarcasm in my previous post was lost.

Will you be labelling the food? I am veggie and this is a problem I find. So often for work I am asked if I want veggie food included in a buffet. However at the buffet you cannot tell what is veggie or not. I end up hanging back and asking others what is in the items they are eating.

RoseRuby26 thank you for thinking so much about this. In four years with my current company, I've never been provided a decent meal at any internal event. And the veggie "option" is usually one dish, so hardly an option. I would remember your wedding forever if I was actually properly catered for!

Yes, definitely label things. I've spent many a family event having to get my parents or sister to 'taste test' anything that could be but isn't definitely veggie first!

I would either go all vegetarian or 5 veggi, 1 meat and 1 fish. I'm a meat eater who eats a lot of vegetarian food Smile

Red lots of things are vegetarian that aren't vegetables lol. Like a cheese sandwich, chips, rice, pasta, crackers, crisps, some sweets, some cakes, cereal, beans, yogurts and obviously so much more! Lots of food is veggie that I'm sure you eat.
