AIBU?

Veggie wedding question

We are currently mid last minute wedding plans. In the evening we are having a 7 piece buffet for guests. Day guests will have had 3 course dinner but for evening guests this will be their only food. We have a choice of about 20 delicious items but cannot come to a decision about how many items out of the 7 should be veggie. Partner thinks 2 out of 7 should be veggie. I would rather 3 or 4 veggie items as 2 items of food e.g. a couple of veggie samosas and a Halloumi skewer is not enough for vegetarians and meat eaters will surely eat veggies foods too. He is a big meat eater and is making a fuss. There are likely to be about 10 vegetarians out of 150 guests. AIBU?

Generally evening buffets at weddings are finger buffets, just a little something. Never been to a wedding that's had a full on fork buffet, would be too much as dinner would have only been a little bit beforehand.

5 veggie, 2 meat. I wouldn't have stinky prawns. And I think wedges is just an extra for anyone.

I would've thought the whole 'seven pieces' thing made it perfectly obvious it was finger food.

As a veggie I agree you should include more. So depressing when there is only 1-2 things you can eat!

Well, OP used the words piece and item. It's also possible to have a buffet offering x pieces alongside salads, rice etc. I can think of at least one occasion I've seen this advertised.

That's great there are places offering variety :)

here's an idea- have a vegetarian buffet with a few vegan choices- then on a separate table, have a selection of meat items.

Have you got any other dietary requirements to consider, e.g. coeliac/allergies? Might help make a decision one way or another

Am I the only one who wants to know what the non veggie options are? I'm just nosy!

Pretty sure no other dietary requirements but as some of you say, you can never be sure. Just for soaking up....

Meat options:
Peking duck spring rolls
Mini chicken and bacon pies
Mini pork pies
Cajun chicken pieces
Bbq and honey chicken bites
Chinese spice chicken Gordon's
Mini croque monsieur
Homemade sausage rolls
Jack Daniels bbq spare ribs
Honey glazed cocktail sausage

I'm quite excited for the buffet I have to say!

This thread is making me hungry!

Report

Which options are you thinking op?

Report
cexuwaleozbu · 28/07/2016 21:45

Definitely 4 veggie options and 3 meat. Meat eaters will all want to try all the available options anyway and your veggie guests will definitely go hungry if you only have a couple of veggie options.

Brie and cranberry parcels
Feta and tarragon risotto balls
Cracked black pepper potato skins
Halloumi cheese skewers

Please don't choose prawns as one of your "veggie" options. Prawns are meat.

Given all the options you listed I'd honestly go all veggie and use the first seven on the list. They're all substantial enough to satisfy the meat eaters and it will solve the eternal dilemma of providing enough for the veggies.

Thanks for posting meat for me op!
If it were for me personally I'd go 4 veggie, 1 fish, 2 chicken
But as I'm not coming to your wedding I'd suggest
Potato wedges
Nachos
Halloumi
Risotto ball
Prawns
Cajun chicken
Croque monsieur

Although sticky sausages do always go v quickly!
I do enjoy a hypothetical buffet!

I would go with two veggie options.

Haha to hypothetical buffet! It's very hard to balance personal taste and catering to a group of 150. I'd like to chose veggie samosas, potato skins, Halloumi skewers, risotto balls, one of the chickens, sausage rolls and duck spring rolls. A range of food types I think. Of course there will be cake too!!! Better leave room at dinner!

French bread sandwiches (assorted)
Brie and cranberry parcels
Feta and tarragon risotto balls
Cracked black pepper potato skins
Hot and cheesy Nachos and dips
Halloumi cheese skewers
Mini vegetable samosas
Tempura battered king prawn (for the fish eaters)

Out of that I'd only be able to have the prawns and the samosas.

I am slightly off topic but....
I am vegetarian and gluten free which is no longer the nightmare it used to be.
However, I have been going to a class for the last few months at which we have coffee and cake.
The array of cakes is really lovely, lemon drizzle, coffee and walnut, lime and coconut, chocolate cake etc. I always have a pre-packed GF option, chocolate and orange tart or chocolate brownie, for which I am very grateful.
This week I noticed as I arrived that there was a GF Victoria Sponge cake. As I am involved in a bit of organisation I was late to the cafe.....guess what?!

All the Victoria Sponge had gone! 😳And there were no pre-packed options.
I was a bit miffed, I must admit, I love Victoria Sponge and I may have watched every bite go down from under my lashes.

I am being unreasonable, I do know! 😉

The only one of those meat options that would excite me is the duck rolls.
I'd probably eat them all except the pies if I was hungry and I didn't see anything else, but I'd honestly prefer the veggie options over most of the meat ones.

Although as a general rule, sausage rolls / sausages usually seem to go down well at buffets with most meat eaters.

Everyone likes the veggie things too so you can't lose by having more of them. It's also useful to have a variety, as, for example, not all vegetarians like mushrooms (a usual v. staple).

YOur wedding sounds lovely.Flowers

Middle eastern things are good for vegetarians.

Report
MaidOfStars · 28/07/2016 22:46

Potato skins are not a 'veggie option', they are a side dish that everyone will lay equal claim to.

Again, the last thread, people expected veggies to just have the 'salad and bits'. I want a fucking dedicated course, not a selection of sides.
