I am a runner, Im so tired of people's dogs running and jumping on me while i'm on a run. Its always dog owners with the larger dogs, if you have a dog that is excitable and is known to chase jump and be a general nuisance to others trying to enjoy the park please put it on a lead.

I suffer severe allergies and today a dog jumped on me while i'm out running and scratched my leg. I have now got a 4 inch scratch which could scar from the knee down. The lazy owner had the dog off a lead and was very overweight so could not keep up with the dog running off ahead.

She then had the nerve to tell me i was out of order for kicking the dog off me.

Please Dog Owners put your dog on a lead.

Do you look before you cross the road? Even at a zebra crossing? Even when the lights are on red for traffic? Not everyone obeys the law. Some people might be looking at their phone or driving too fast. You could just step out into the road and rely on the protection of the law. Do you?

I have a very friendly dog who will recall brilliantly when cyclists appear where we walk him but he does manage to smother people sometimes.

I adore all dogs and actively approach most I see to ask if I can pet it. But as an ex runner myself I had a really bad experience once where I was on the pavement running past a car and the dog got excited and leapt out, pinning me to the park railings standing on its hind legs and barking maniacally. I was cross to have to stop for fear I wouldn't ever be able to carry on and a bit frightened to be honest and the owners did nothing. I can sort of see where the OP is coming from even though I would usually offer any poster complaining about dogs a Biscuit.

As I've explained my dogs don't jump up so I never thankfully get into scenario's like the OP did today, the problem I have is people kicking dogs

Well, in that case you don't have a problem with your dogs.

Why don't you have a problem with dogs scratching or biting people, or making them possibly trip up? That's what I would like to know.

Lweji · 28/07/2016 18:48

Jumping at you isn't an act of aggression.

So, it's ok and you're supposed to wait to see if it bites? Fuck that.

I'm a big believer in the dog park thing. I've lost count of the amount of times my daughter and I have been approached by a strange dog in the park and the owner is nowhere to be seen. Yes the owner knows the animal, but I don't. I don't know if it's friendly or not or how it reacts to certain things.

If the owner did nothing to stop their animal the I think you're perfectly within your right to get the animal off you and away from you as you see fit BusyJessica.

Even if the dog bites someone?
What is the victim supposed to do?

SonicSpotlight · 28/07/2016 18:55

Ok. I don't think I'm communicating this well. They're not jumping up at you to bite you. If they were a dog that bites they would have bitten you already.

Dog jumps up. This may cause scratches. Stand arms down, head down like the link.

Dog is kicked. This may actually cause the dog to bite.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 28/07/2016 18:56

You had all my sympathy until you started Fat shaming. Even if her weight was to your liking. The dog was still off the lead.

I shouldn't have to because the dig should not approach me in the first place if it's under close control as it's the law.

YABU to kick an excited dog IMHO, and if I was allergic to dogs I wouldn't go running a park where dogs run off lead. YANBU to be upset with irresponsible dog owners letting their dogs off the lead without good recall, though.

My dog absolutely loves people, and does go up to them when off lead on walks. She is a very large dog, but she is only ever off lead in the woods and fields where there are loads of dogs off lead and I would expect that anyone walking or running there would be OK with dogs being off lead. My dog has excellent recall, but I don't call her back from everyone on our walks, unless they warn me that their dog is antisocial (and on lead) or if there are small children who might be afraid of a dog larger than them who loves children. In that case I generally call ahead to people to say there's a big friendly dog headed their way so they don't get surprised and/or have a chance to tell or show me they are afraid of dogs.

I would be incensed if someone kicked my dog for being inquisitive and friendly. That said, she doesn't jump up on people unless invited to do so and usually just gives them a sniff. If someone was so scared of her being close to them that they lashed out at her I would be furious. And she wouldn't lash out in return - she would run away with her ears back and tail between her legs and be frightened and confused as all she has ever known from people is love. That's why I would be most upset.

Ds who has very severe learning difficulties might kick a dog who jumped at him him because he wouldn't understand why this 'thing' is touching him or invading his space and would feel scared.

UnexpectedBaggage · 28/07/2016 19:10

I'd kick any dog that came running at me. I don't know excited from angry. Better safe than sorry.

SonicSpotlight · 28/07/2016 19:15

'Better safe than sorry'

Not at all safe.

Choceeclair123 · 28/07/2016 19:15

YANBU it's ridiculous that some people think it's ok for a dog to jump on you and cause injury to your leg?! If a strange dog jumped up and scratched me I'd kick it off myself!

kali110 · 28/07/2016 19:20

What a surprise.
School holiday and another thread slagging dogs off!
Then the op tries to explain why she had to kick the animal blah blah
If i saw somebody kicking a dog just because it jumped up them i'd advise them to run too, from the owner and me.
Your comment about the owner is disgraceful.

SonicSpotlight · 28/07/2016 19:21

One last try.

Kicking a dog may cause it to bite you.

Ok, kick away. If you want to play canine Russian roulette who am I to stop you.

The fat-shaming has not been mentioned by "dog haterz" (Grin Grin) because it is irrelevant. The point still stands: if you can't control your dog, put it on a lead. Fat, thin, tall, short, I don't care. Just control your animals!
