But I've been coming on the same family holiday since I was born. We're close knit, there's just my gran, mum, aunt, uncle, me and usually my brother and cousin come but haven't this year. My mum's cousin rocked up yesterday with his friend and now there's two strange middle aged men here and it's just making me feel so uncomfortable. I can't wander around braless or in my tiny pj shorts. I'm having to make fucking small talk and they're asking me about my job, career etc. I just wanted a week of chilling out and not have to think about work or make the effort with anything and I feel it's all ruined now Angry. My Gran is acting like the fucking queen is here and flapping about all the meals and thinks she has to make loads of effort. AIBU? I just don't want them here!! As I type this my aunty is arranging days out to take them on because she feels like they need to be 'entertained'.. It's ridiculous!

Ps before I get flamed for being a bitch to them I'm not, I'm being charming and making small talk as is expected but inside I'm raging!

You can't really help how you feel but you can help how you act towards them. I do understand why you'd feel uncomfortable but if it's a family thing and they're family then they have as much right to be there. Instead of feeling hostile how about trying to embrace the situation as a chance to get to know them? They could be the best fun ever and you just don't know it yet. At very worst you might get cheaper dental treatment in future?

Fwiw having a wife and kids is no barrier to being in a same sex relationship with someone else. As you don't know these guys perhaps you don't know what's going on in their lives right now. Maybe they need this holiday together more than you need it without them?

Eddie no, because they're 'guests'. In fact last night I realised me, my mum, my Gran and aunt were all in the kitchen prepping tea last night and the men were in the living room drinking beer. I was 'Angry'.

And Bloop they are 100% not a couple haha. I know it's not a barrier but they're not together!

oh I sympathise
I always remember arranging to spend New Year's with a friend and then she said her ILs were coming and I thought "OMD how can I just be in front of people I've never met".

they were lovely people but it was a bit strange and I didn't want to sit on the sofa in my nightie like I normally would.

Bloody hell, I'd be telling them that they're rota'd on to do certain meals.
Have they paid towards the holiday house? Have they brought shopping? Are they staying all week?
I suggest you get hammered and take lots of naps Flowers

Just go and read your books! Don't let it ruin your holiday, take yourself somewhere quiet and read/relax/just try and forget they are there. They sound fairly harmless.

That's it Lorelei I can't let it all hang out!! I think I'm most pissed off by the fact I have to wear a bra Angry.

No not paid, they brought wine yesterday but I don't drink that. Only gin. Yes to getting hammered and naps!

Anyway thanks for all the replies, I'm off for a hike without wifi so won't have my phone.

I was going to say YABU but thinking more about it, I would love a week without a bra.

My dentist is a nice chap and would probably be good company on a holiday but not good enough to outweigh the bra wearing.

On balance I think YANBU.

Are you also stamping your feet? Of course YABU. Take your bra off, get your books and chill. YOU will be the one ruining your holiday, not anyone else if you don't.

I can see why you're miffed and I think it is unreasonable for any one of the group not to have asked if it was OK to bring friends along. You are where you are though and going all moody won't change anything other than to make the situation worse. Put a brave face on it and you might just find you end up enjoying your holiday after all. Your feelings are under your control - choose to feel happy (or at least not bothered) by these unexpected guests and crack on.

Yanbu.

You booked and paid for a holiday with certain expectations and beliefs of how it would be/go alongside your payment.

Now that's changed and you aren't getting what you believed you paid for.

I've booked to go away with friends before. We discuss arrangements and how it will work beforehand. If one of them rocked up with others in tow it would change the dynamic. The change doesn't necessarily have to be for the worse but in your situation it's changed the woman into mother figures rather than fellow holiday makers.

Hope your hike was good

YANBU, that would piss me off big-time. Dynamics shift, and small-talk is boring. Having strangers around would make me really, really tense; quite the opposite of what you hope for on a holiday! Just go your own way and do as you originally planned.

Your real problem starts next year if your Gran has decided she loves having cousin on the holiday and it happens every year. You will have to decide whether to go with the flow or forget these holidays in future.

can't say that id go braless in front of my aunts and uncles anyway so not really getting the big deal

EmzDisco · 25/07/2016 15:05

Not sure it's really about what relationship other people have with their own aunts and uncles, more that OP executed to have a holiday with people she knows very well and feels very comfortable with, and now is also holidaying with people who are essentially strangers to her. I'd be miffed too!

I don't think you're being U - the dynamic has changed and you don't know them. And the 'fatted calf' behavior form your nan is a bit annoying but maybe you can leave them to it and join for the meal?

So basically you've been looking forward to your annual 'kick back and chill' holiday all year and you turn up and there are two complete strangers along for the duration. And you're expected to cook for them?

Fuck that. YANBU.

Hike to a shop and buy them a cook book and tell them they are doing the evening meals for the rest of the holiday!!

Fucking hell I struck off into the wildnerness and have just got back, I'm knackered now Shock! To answer a few questions, no I'm not stamping my feet. Mentioned before this is just me venting, outwardly I'm being personable and charming so no chance of me ruining the holiday. And no it's not abroad, it's in the UK. Anyway I'm in the bath now with a g&t WineGrin

I'm not going to lie, I'm seriously Confused at the tits out scenario.

Uncle? Brother? I'd feel odd being tits out in front of my Grandma, never mind the rest.

Horses for courses, though.

It's the "women in the kitchen" running around after the men in the living room that would piss me off let alone the not being able to get rid of the bra...

Let alone the having to make small talk with this chaps "dentist" yes I know they are people too I just wouldn't want to make small talk on my holiday and I get the sense if the OP had known about the extras she possibly wouldn't have gone

I dont think the OP has said she wanted to sit with her boobs out on display for her granny to see has she?

I often take my bra off when I stay with just my mum, I have a tshirt on too :)
