Come on mumsnet, how many of us are smokers? and a little about yourself, age, disposable income, history of drug/alcohol -abuse- use yadda yadda yadda...

Do you smoke around DC?

Smoked from the age of 14-20 (5-10 per day). Now have 2-3 whenever I drink, maybe once a fortnight?

Smoked weed from the ages of 15-24/25? Quite a lot ! I do really miss it actually as I love the smell / taste, but it's panic attack central for me if I do, so worked out about 5 years ago I can't smoke it anymore (not even the odd cheeky drag at a party!)

I'm 34.

Liz09 · 20/07/2016 06:31

I'm 25, don't smoke and never have. I haven't done any other drugs either, although do love a glass of wine or two occasionally. Smile

My godmother was just diagnosed with stage four lung cancer. She's 57. The prognosis is less than two years to live. Absolutely devastating, and no doubt the result of her long-term smoking.

elvislives2012 · 20/07/2016 06:33

Non smoker now
36, 2 DC
I smoked 20 a day for 15 years and gave up 5 years ago following hypnotism. Just. Like. That.
ANAZING

londonrach · 20/07/2016 06:41

No, never have, never would. Disgusting habit. Can smell a smoker no matter what, they cant hid it. However someones choice to smoke isnt my issue so they body, they smoking, just never in my house!

RavioliOnToast · 20/07/2016 06:47

23, not loads of disposable income, no drug history , I smoke between 5-7 a day but plan to quit after this box (about 6) but go Away in 6 weeks so will no doubt start again

exLtEveDallas · 20/07/2016 06:50

Age 44. No current 'disposable' income but previously had around £500/month 'play' money that I spunked or saved.

Smoked 20/day from age 16 to 42. Probably closer to 30/day for the final 5 years.

Didn't smoke when PG but started again almost immediately after birth. A true regret. Never smoked in the house or car with DD, but did smoke 'around' her when outside.

Started vaping in Sep 14 when my finances changed. Have had a few fags since, but only if out/drinking/holidays. Won't go back to it. Have put on 2 stone since I stopped - but one issue at a time hey Smile. Have noticed how much better I breath and feel better about myself.

Hoping to stop the vaping by Xmas. Have a job that means I don't vape for at least 8 hours a day and that helps.

annandale · 20/07/2016 06:56

Never smoked. My dad has always smoked and used to stub his fag out in the boiled egg shell at breakfast, made me want to puke. Also resented having to carry his ashtrays around [Kevin the teenager emoticon]. Clothes, house, all smelled. I'm not rational about smoking at all, just a whiff of it makes me flinch. In my rational mind I know there are far worse things - I drink for example which is terrible for you. I work in a cancer unit and a respiratory unit at times and I hate the tobacco companies for what they do. COPD is the one i think people don't talk about - it devastates lives. People having to take rests just from the effort of brushing their teeth etc.

DH took up pipe smoking for about a week and I couldn't really imagine staying with him long term with that going on, it was a desperate moment. Like someone doing the stinkiest possible farts for five minutes at a time six times a day and refusing to see a doctor.

I suppose if I wanted to smoke I would find the money, not sure what else I would have to give up, but something.

gamerchick

Yes and strawberry jam, can't be lumpy strawberry jam that makes me gag

embo1 · 20/07/2016 07:11

Smoked until I found out I was pregnant, lo is now 3 and I get hacked off is someone 24 miles away even thinks about blowing smoke in my direction

TanteRose · 20/07/2016 07:24

I smoke socially, so maybe 2 or 3 of an evening, once or twice a week at most.
One pack lasts me aaaggges...

not much disposable income, but cigarettes cost much less here (less than 4 quid for a pack of 20)

I only really started a couple of years ago (I'm 48). Dunno, really, I suppose quite a few of my friends smoke and I enjoy it.
My kids are teens and they know.

wigglesrock · 20/07/2016 08:00

I'm in my early 40s, I smoked from my late teens on & off. I stopped for each of my pregnancies, then for about a year after each. I now smoke about 7-10 a week when the kids are in bed. I can go days/a week or so without smoking but I've no intention of giving them up.

Moneywise I'm not well off, I don't drink, don't use drugs, my husband doesn't smoke, my parents don't smoke, my friends don't smoke.

SaucyJack · 20/07/2016 08:09

I smoked about 20 a day (except when pregnant) until Jan of this year when I swapped rollies for an e-cig.

I haven't had an actual cigarette for around six months now, but I don't really consider myself to have stopped "smoking" because I'm so happy with my vape set-up that it feels like the real thing anyway.

Cost was never a factor as I rolled my own.

PatPhelan · 20/07/2016 08:12

27, 2 dc under 2. I smoke between 10-15 a day. Outdoors away from children.
Given up many times with e-cig and twice whilst pregnant with patches.
Dp smokes and has never given up, I doubt I would have carried on smoking if he didnt. Silly I know.
Not a lot of disposable income.

Ginmakesitallok · 20/07/2016 08:18

Smoked for over 20 years, was on 30 a day. At the time told myself I enjoyed it. I really didn't, I was addicted. I stank, was spending over £70 a week on fags, life revolved around making sure I always had fags. Tried half heartedly to give up a few times, never managed it, felt like too much of a loss.

One day passed an e cig stall, decided to give it a go. 3 years later I've lit a total of 3 cigarettes, last one about a year ago. It's great! I don't smell, my kids aren't seeing me smoke or passively smoking themselves, no more chest infections, and it's cheaper. Wish I'd done it years ago.

There are no good reasons to smoke.

dizzyfucker · 20/07/2016 08:41

Never smoked, tried it once when I was 13, it was the worst thing I'd ever tasted and I thought my friends were all batshit.

I'm 40, never done drugs, no desire to try. My mum's an ex-smoker and loves her maurijuana. She has health problems up the wazoo. Although she pretends none of them could possibly be caused by sucking chemicals into her internal organs for decades.

I drank in my youth, but stopped around 25, now I drink occasionally with meals.

I assume the disposable income question is related to how much you spend in cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. I do have disposable income, we would still have it if we smoked, did drugs and drank too though.

Cornishmumoftwo · 20/07/2016 10:30

Smoked 30 a day for 26 years, even being pregnant didn't stop me. I'm a single mum with 2 young children and wanted to give up. Last year I hit crunch point of buying fags or feeding my children, food won and I stopped and took up vaping. It will be a year tomorrow since I gave up. I rarely miss it and can't believe how much it stinks!

PlumDogMillionaire · 20/07/2016 10:36

So inspired by all of these different responses - we all have our reasons and I am glad that I asked Smile

big up all the quitters, mad respect to you guys. Hope that will be me in a few years and I promise I will suck it up if you pardon the pun, and get myself a vape (for private use!)

Cheers lobster, anonymity turns people in to dicks!

I smoked from age 15 to 69 and then year before last had a fall which resulted in broken hip and thigh bone and eight long, boring weeks on traction in hospital. They slapped patches on me and I haven't smoked since although I still get a yearning now and again. I spend the money I've saved on my garden and gardener.

Only time I tried drugs was whilst bumming round Europe with a friend in my early 20s. It was impossible not to smoke weed in Amsterdam while we were there for a few weeks but never touched it since.

P1nkP0ppy · 20/07/2016 10:42

I smoked 20/day for longer than I'm prepared to admit to on here.
Gave up cold turkey 13 months ago, not missed it at all.
Am still surprised it was so painless 😀

FurryDogMother · 20/07/2016 10:53

57 here, started smoking when I was 14 (on an exchange trip to Frace, the 'maman' kept us quiet by giving us 200 Dunhill each). Stopped cold turkey for 3 months about 10 years ago, then had too much to drink and started again. 5 years ago, I switched to vaping, except i didn't really, because I still allowed myself the occasional spliff, which became less and less occasional, to the extent I was on 5 or 6 spliffs a day :) Went back to smoking again - then a friend of mine died from lung cancer (he never smoked) about 6 weeks ago, and a mutual friend asked me if I'd think about stopping smoking. Thought about it, dusted off the old vaping equipment, decided to give up spliffs as well as all other forms of tobacco, bought some nice new shiny vaping equipment, found some new e-juices I really like, and am now exclusively vaping and have vowed never to touch tobacco again. Phew - long story!

WorraLiberty · 20/07/2016 10:55

I hate to break up the love-in here between the OP and Thelobstereffect, but this thread does very much come across as research.

And if people think that, they're entitled to say so.

paxillin · 20/07/2016 11:07

Agree, Worra. As I said last night, OP ought to collect some personally identifying data or else her research will be useless.

NeedACleverNN · 20/07/2016 11:08

Nope

27 here and I've never even tried it.

I was tempted around 17/18 but I didn't give in. Firmly glad of that now

BabyDubsEverywhere · 20/07/2016 11:17

Started smoking at 9. Stopped for each pregnancy from moment I found out about them (4dc) started after each birth as a way to prolong staying off Bipolar meds for a bit. stopped again a few months after last dc and started vaping. Love vaping - will probably vape forever now! Never smoked around dc or in the house (either before or after dc) but vape constantly so they see that.

Drugs? everything bar smack in my youth. Used to drink heavily on weekend binges too (Thurs-Sun). All stopped when found out about dc1.
Income? Nil - haven't worked since 2006 and been a full time student for last 5 years. We live off DHs mediocre wage.
Can't remember if there were any other Qs
I'm 32

IslandLife · 20/07/2016 11:27

Started smoking when I was 12, then had tried quite a few drugs by my early 20s. I'm lucky that I don't have an addictive personality at all, so now I'm 36 have enough disposable income and I'm pregnant. As soon as I suspected I was pg I stumped out my last cig, not been tempted since.
