WWYD car parked on our drive

Marsaday · 19/07/2016 21:48

Some complete asshat has left their car parked on our drive.

It has been there at least since my OH got home at 4.30, but could have been there all day.
Have phoned 101 and police say not reported stolen but they won't do anything as the car is on private land and not blocking us in. It's not a car that we recognise as belonging to neighbours and we're not near a hospital, station, airport etc.
We have currently parked across the drive preventing said car from leaving and left our phone number on the window. However, as we have a baby and a toddler our phones are on silent at night.
WIBU to leave the car blocked in until morning?
Or how can we get the car moved?

I don't think they did park there by accident, MummyZu - others have suggested it was an innocent mistake - not me. How does someone 'accidentally' park outside one house and go off to another house/somewhere totally different?

But, if it was an innocent mistake, the fact that the car has been moved off the drive onto the road, would suggest that the owner has realised they shouldn't be parked on the OP's drive. So why, when they moved the car, didn't they pop a note through the door, explaining the mistake?

And I am afraid I don't buy your FAR worse things have happened in the world, why stress about something so minor line. It always looks to me like an attempt to shut down a debate. people discuss all sorts of things on here - from domestic violence, bereavement and serious illness to what to name a kitten and what to do when there is an elderly Korean lady sitting in your garden whilst her son dismantles the shed he's bought. There is no requirement for us to discuss only matters of major importance.

snazzienazzie · 22/07/2016 00:26

Let the tyres down!!

KittenOfWoe · 22/07/2016 00:38

How truly odd - to have had the nerve to park there in the first place, and then to hide and move it without an apology but leave it so close!! I'd be too embarrassed. Jeez.

SoupDragon · 22/07/2016 05:52

how do you know they have realised its a mistake yet??

I'm no genius, but I would have thought the fact that the car was moved into the road was a bit of a giveaway.

SoupDragon · 22/07/2016 05:53

Read into the history of the world where you will find nations stealing others' nation from literally under their feet.

Seriously? !

Do you never have a whinge about something inconsequential?

Jenny70 · 22/07/2016 06:13

You could still scatter birdseed on it and hope the neighbourhood pigeons take roost!

P1nkP0ppy · 22/07/2016 06:29

How the feck can parking deliberately on someone else's driveway be an innocent mistake?

Catsize · 22/07/2016 07:29

Indeed ex, joyriders are well known for leaving cars in driveways and then moving them onto the road after a while. 🙄

rainbowstardrops · 22/07/2016 08:11

Grin at the posters who don't think it's a big deal to park on someone's driveway without permission!

I sometimes wonder if MN is some parallel universe to the one that I live in Confused

BristolLFR · 22/07/2016 08:20

Related question while we're all hanging around....

I want to get my front garden done and kerb lowered so I can park on it (we live near a football stadium that was supposed to be moving when we bought the house).

If WE then park across our own lowered kerb (family visiting for instance), would we still get ticketed?

We're only blocking our own driveway, so would have no objection. But the parking inspectors are hot on match days...

pollymere · 22/07/2016 08:32

Police can do something! They can issue behaviour notices, trace the owner etc. They're just reluctant for a one off but if it's still there now you can say it's been abandoned. Alternatively, have it towed for a small fee to somewhere else and the charge the owner the cost of the tow plus parking and admin to tell them where it is.

cherrybath · 22/07/2016 08:41

We had this happen once and it turned out to be a relative of somebody we knew by sight over the road - they didn't even try to let us know they were parking it and couldn't understand why we were annoyed. Bl**dy cheek....

coolaschmoola · 22/07/2016 08:42

Arf at 'entitled' - the op and her oh are the ONLY people 'entitled' to park on the drive... Because they OWN it!

Hmm
Roussette · 22/07/2016 09:01

But it's not still there.... that's the whole point

Spadequeen · 22/07/2016 09:11

You could always cover it in post it notes. No damage to the car but infuriating and time consuming for the driver when they eventually return. I'm sure a few local meet tees would be happy to help you out!

Pennina · 22/07/2016 09:12

Bristol. I think you'll get done. As far as I'm aware you're not allowed to park in front of a dropped drive even if it is your's. I guess it's because there's no way of knowing that you're not a random person blocking somebody else is drive!

nick247 · 22/07/2016 09:34

Happens to me all the time, Damn annoying! !!!

wowfudge · 22/07/2016 09:41

You might want to consider penguin bollards, OP.

BitOutOfPractice · 22/07/2016 10:05

I'm starting to feel left out as this has never happened to me

I've never met Anthony Head either

MiddleClassProblem · 22/07/2016 10:12

Ha! Not had the former but met the latterGrin is that an MN thing? Maybe if you get married in a public loo for 50p in a £20 dress they'll let you back in?

Birdsgottafly · 22/07/2016 10:13

""Indeed ex, joyriders are well known for leaving cars in driveways and then moving them onto the road""

Here in Liverpool gangs would take notice of the houses on nice estates that were empty and when they first stole a car they would park it up on a driveway. They'd then move it around, until it wasn't being actively looked for, before driving it to where it was to go.

The Private housing estate opposite my Mums was being used a lot for this. The Police were tipped off and six cars recovered.

They city is heavily CCTV'd and they could track the Cars movements.

MiddleClassProblem · 22/07/2016 10:19

I'm not sure moving from a drive to the kerb next to it is the same kind of moving around so people can't find it

BitOutOfPractice · 22/07/2016 10:19

There was once a "Celebrities who are nice and nasty" thread MiddleClassProblem and I kid you not, every other MNer had met Anthony Head and testified to his lovleyness. And you have just proved the point Grin

MiddleClassProblem · 22/07/2016 10:21

Grin he obviously gets about! What a tart!
