WWYD car parked on our drive

Marsaday · 19/07/2016 21:48

Some complete asshat has left their car parked on our drive.

It has been there at least since my OH got home at 4.30, but could have been there all day.
Have phoned 101 and police say not reported stolen but they won't do anything as the car is on private land and not blocking us in. It's not a car that we recognise as belonging to neighbours and we're not near a hospital, station, airport etc.
We have currently parked across the drive preventing said car from leaving and left our phone number on the window. However, as we have a baby and a toddler our phones are on silent at night.
WIBU to leave the car blocked in until morning?
Or how can we get the car moved?

I used to have this problem on race days when I lived close to a racecourse. No end of people choosing to ignore residents only parking bays. My sister recommended (although I never did it) to write 'no parking here' on the windscreen with a lipstick. Nightmare to get off, no permanent damage!

Memoires · 20/07/2016 09:46

What sort of state is the car in? Is it nice, shiny and cared for, or is it really old and shit?

Memoires · 20/07/2016 09:47

I think we need a photo. you could then upload the pic to parkedlikeacunt.com

to anyone thinking this is just a town or city problem then think again! We live in a very rural / middle of nowhere place. we have a long drive to our house with a splayed concrete bit at the top. for some reason people think this is a parking bay - ignoring the gates to our house completely. I have lost count of the number of times people have parked up here to go for a walk. just left their cars on the concrete and gone. we have a sign up saying this is not a layby its privately owned but it still happens. Once one parks there 2 or 3 others squeeze in behind so we cant get in or out.

worse than this are the completely cheeky feckers who go into our fields for their picnics and barbecues. they just park and hop the gates with their stuff. barbecues are the worst because of the fire risk to crops. people get so arsey when you tell them to move. would they like me to have a picnic in their back garden?

Op I hope you are able to move the car into the road or get it blocked in otherwise the person who has done this will think its not a problem and do it again.

HalsallRedux · 20/07/2016 09:49

This is why, when we moved house, I was determined to have off-street parking where we couldn't be blocked in.

Previous house was a terrace with on-street parking only. Space for one car outside each (small) house. We had one car. Neighbours (a couple) had two cars and a motorbike - second car and bike were virtually never used. People across the road (a couple) had three cars despite working full-time and often being away. Another neighbour had an old wreck permanently taking up a space despite it having no engine, covered in tarpaulin and up on blocks. God knows how he got round that being deemed roadworthy but it took up a space for years and was still there when we moved. The memory of trying to park brings me out in a cold sweat 15 years later.

Can't wait to hear how this one turns out Grin

shamelessly placemarking! Grin

2ManySweets · 20/07/2016 09:50

Blatant puh-lace-mark.

dodobookends · 20/07/2016 09:50

If ever there was a time to order several tons of gravel, this is it.

Stormtreader · 20/07/2016 09:50

Cant you get it towed? I thought there were tow companies that did it for free, because they got paid by the car owner when they went to get their car back?

goneswimming · 20/07/2016 09:55

Watching for updates!

EvansAndThePrince · 20/07/2016 09:55

Place marking! BrewCake

*I know it's cheeky but some of these suggestions are extreme/inappropriate.

And around 99% of them are just a joke!*

Yes I always take threads like this a 'things I would love to do' but in the real world you just end up seething

StarryIllusion · 20/07/2016 09:58

Tub of vaseline. Bottle of food colouring. Don't forget to get plenty under each door handle.

pictish · 20/07/2016 09:58

There was another thread on here once where someone had a random car parked on their drive. Turned out the owner of the car had permission to use the drive but had parked it at the wrong address! Was very embarrassed and apologetic.
I wonder if it could be anything like that?

diddl · 20/07/2016 09:58

Doesn't it seem ridiculous that you can park on private property & it seems taht there's nothing the owner can do?

If it's a mistake then if a friend or taxi were collecting them the mistake would have been realised?

Parents used to live near a bloke whose son, when visiting would park wherever.

Because everyone knew his car & where he was & could just ask him to move if necessary!

FruitCider · 20/07/2016 10:00

I got back from work after a night shift to find a car on my drive. I jacked it up, took all the wheels off and left the car on bricks. Put the wheels behind my wheelie bin, then went to sleep for the day. When I woke up the car and wheels were gone. Whoever it was has not done it again Grin

GabsAlot · 20/07/2016 10:01

cant believe the car is still there

if it was a mistake surely they would have turned up by now

ring round tow companies see what they can do

t4gnut · 20/07/2016 10:02

FruitCider

Now that's the kind of thinking I like!

Blatherskite · 20/07/2016 10:03

It can't still be there!?!

Maybe it's a gift?

MaddyHatter · 20/07/2016 10:04

At this point i'd be calling the council and getting it towed as an abandoned vehicle.

The other option is to see if the police will trace its owner?

BeckyMcDonald · 20/07/2016 10:04

Please get a skip. Please. I'm sure it's time for a good clear out, isn't it OP....? Grin

Wixi · 20/07/2016 10:05

Just place marking - don't want to miss the outcome :-)

Has anything happened yet? Waiting with baited breath (and place marking).
