Men With Their Tops Off In Public Places because it's hot.

Was in ASDA and this bloke just walking round doing his shopping with no top on, belly hanging over shorts. Yes, it's hot and what not but it's just such male privilege.

If a woman walked around in just her bra because it's so hot, she'd be body shamed and cat called and possibly even assaulted and told she'd "asked for it"

And yet men can go around comfy while we suffer. The injustice!!

"I still find it ridiculous how many say women would be body shamed if they did it/ get abuse and this thread proves that the men are body shamed and people may say but they don't say anything in person. That may be true but what about facial expressions, voluntary / involuntary ?"

So you think a slight raising of the eyebrows or an inner grimace at a pot bellied man is the same as yelling out "go on a diet luv" (shouted to my overweight friend who really needed no reminding of the fact)? Or silently appreciating the tatoos on a well-toned male torso is the same as yelling out "I wish you'd suck my cock like you're sucking on that lolly"?

Because that's the crucial difference isn't it? It's called entitlement. Women may think these things about men but they don't generally feel entitled to vocalise it.

Theydontknowweknowtheyknow · 20/07/2016 16:41

But yes to whoever pointed out about men in suits. It's silly that men are still required to be wear formal attire to work in this weather. I feel the same when I see a woman in a black cloak and veil next to her husband in short sleeves. Both seem unfair.

The difference is she wears it out on the weekend too.

milliemolliemou · 20/07/2016 17:15

I find inappropriately dressed people of either sex offensive. By the beach or river or doing sports - fine to bare. Shops, streets - why? A Tshirt would do.

I do feel for men and women who have to be suited and booted for jobs as I do for those who follow the yashmak.

I had an obese husband who didn't realise the offense he was causing, not helped by the fact he often forgot to do his flies up. Nice man but oblivious to how he could offend people.

Woodhill · 20/07/2016 17:22

I don't like it. Fine in a park or at the beach obviously. I agree people could get sunburnt or sunstroke. I'm here in a vest top and shorts but probably wouldn't go out like it

Unicorn1981 · 20/07/2016 17:25

This drives me mad. I really don't want to see it even if the guy has a six pack to rival Daniel Craig. It's not necessary and yanbu. I even saw a guy on a motorcycle yesterday with just shorts on!

TheNewStatesman · 20/07/2016 17:30

I really don't care.

Yes, it's a tad annoying that men "get" to do this, but perhaps men find it annoying that they don't "get" to wear skirts on hot days, and that they have to wear ties and closed shoes in formal work environments. Imagine if some bloke was like "I think women should wear ties in the office because WE have to, in order to make it fair." I wouldn't be impressed by that.

TheNewStatesman · 20/07/2016 17:34

By the way, the people who are cringing at the thought that someone's sweat might get on them--I assume you also disapprove of women wearing stripy tops? Those expose your armpits as well.

Unicorn1981 · 20/07/2016 17:43

I've been in a nightclub before where an un-topped(?) man brushed against me and practically washed me in his sweat (eurgh!)

Stripy, floral, psychedelic -doesn't matter the pattern. Do stripy tops really expose armpits? Hmm

DP and DS work in a very hot job - in lofts and on roofs (the roof tiles are baking, and entering a loft in this weather is literally like crawling into an oven). They wear t-shirts and trousers, it would be unprofessional to do otherwise.

DS has just come into the kitchen to ask if it would be 'suitable attire' to nip to the local shops in his shorts and trainers for a couple of minutes, with no t-shirt (he has today injured his shoulder and is in a sling, so he actually would have a bit of an excuse). DP and I both said 'No, it ', so he hasn't gone. Someone else is going for him. Just not acceptable - as I said earlier, it is a matter of respect for other people.

I really like your post Theydontknow exactly....

But what makes it unacceptable and a state of dress acceptableI know everybody has different thresholds, but

Would it be more acceptable if women "could" and if so is it really inappropriate or a case of well we can't...

People believe women going topless for free the nipple in public places is fine, if topless is really the issue what makes that OK?

People do naked art like in hull that was seen as acceptable? And with so many participating I don't imagine every little blue/ green painted person went straight home clothed, at what part dos that become unacceptable?

People do naked photo shots that in the right context are seen as artful or OK, it appears in the wrong magazine/ website suddenly it's become porn and unacceptable to some that would have felt it was ok before.

If someone felt what another was wearing is unacceptable, does that mean it's not acceptable?

Like I said everyone has different ideals and thresholds but I can't see the difference between some of those examples and men who walk around topless, especially if they don't interact with you?

Middleoftheroad · 20/07/2016 19:20

I don't like it, regardless of physical condition. Don't see men in other countries doing it round the supermarche - I do think it's a Brit thing. First bit of sun's out equals guns out, tats out and sunburn. Makes me cringe, but I dislike the whole vest top, mini combo too. I may be a prude but I get embarrassed on everybody's behalf.
Put it away!

TheNewStatesman · 20/07/2016 20:56

Strappy tops not stripey! (bloody autocorrect). Yes, they do expose your pits.

SharonBottsPoundOfGrapes · 21/07/2016 15:05

Yeeeeeears ago in a supermarket in Southport there was an old lady handing out tshirts at the shop door to top less men. This was in the days before camera phones and social media. She'd be hailed as a heroine these days. :o

RB68 · 21/07/2016 15:31

its just a body people.

As to food shops - meh - heads shed we don't wear caps to shop, hands - people poke at fruit and veg etc. Warehouses are not exactly sterile!!!

These sorts of attitudes make me wonder how our kds will cope with nakedness when older - we are raising a bunch of "new Puritans"

GloriousGusset · 21/07/2016 15:33

Oh would you stop. People from sunnier European climes have no problem with no nudity. Yet you don't see them parading topless through the frozen food aisle!

Alconleigh · 21/07/2016 15:37

Unless you think the next generation are going to need to be naked in the supermarket or a shopping centre, I don't really see that as a winning argument.......

I stand by my earlier sentiment that it's absolutely bogging. This doesn't mean I wear a full length nighty at home and have a fit of the vapours if I see a nipple.......the two situations are not related.

LilacInn · 21/07/2016 15:43

Vulgar, crass and self-indulgent.

Most men I know, of any age, wouldn't wear shorts in public let alone go around with their torsos bare. Shedding sweat, body hair etc. god knows where. It's just uncouth.

As to "then ban bare legs and arms too" - give me a break. In terms of traditional customs of decorum and attire, limbs =/= torsos any more than bare heads=bare feet. Displaying one's chest, nipples, navel, in public places (other than the beach) is a far cry from showing legs below the knee.

JeffreyNeedsAHobby · 21/07/2016 21:27

TBH I think many women would if they could. We don't have as many issues with nipples. However if a teen wears a short skirt these days she's accused of being distracting (poor men just can't help themselves) so heaven only knows what accidents or criminal offences a woman could cause going around half nude!

dizzyfucker · 22/07/2016 03:22

I live in a very hot place, rarely goes below 18 degrees and I have never seen a topless man outside the beach/pool. I know people who wear long sleeves and hats with flaps when it gets hot. find it odd when I see it in the UK, there's just no need.
