Men With Their Tops Off In Public Places because it's hot.

Was in ASDA and this bloke just walking round doing his shopping with no top on, belly hanging over shorts. Yes, it's hot and what not but it's just such male privilege.

If a woman walked around in just her bra because it's so hot, she'd be body shamed and cat called and possibly even assaulted and told she'd "asked for it"

And yet men can go around comfy while we suffer. The injustice!!

I've yet to walk into a supermarket and compare it to a furnace, so it's absolutely unreasonable to be shirtless. The temperature in most supermarkets is perfectly nice any time of the year so no need to strip off unless you're doing it to make a point.

We're in the Midlands and DP did strip off today when emptying a van into our workshop. I'm not sure the ladies in the hairdressers next door were too chuffed but I would have been more worried about his health than their sensitivities in that situation - it was horrendous and we were both soaking wet after 10 mins.

The problem with comparing heat in this country with that of the Med or elsewhere where it's normal is the humidity levels. The heat in other countries is generally much drier so it's less uncomfortable.

supersoftcuddlytoys · 19/07/2016 18:54

Its very uncouth - I agree OP.

Someone always claims you only see this in the Uk, but that isn't true. In Brazil you see it a lot.

Flumplet · 19/07/2016 18:55

There was one in the school playground this morning at drop off. For some reason it just felt really inappropriate. It was an older (late secondary age) brother of a child. I just thought it a bit odd really - everyone else felt able to wear a top except him.
Hmm

Ifailed · 19/07/2016 18:59

Why is it always the ugly men that have their tops off? I probably wouldn't mind as much if the fit ones did it.

Swap the sex of both poster and undressees, and tell me if that's ok?

tigermoll · 19/07/2016 19:08

Just a bit more hygienic to wear a top in a food shop isn't it?

So surely it shouldn't just be bare male chests, but open footwear, bare legs and women in strappy tops with their armpits out that isn't allowed either? What exactly are you worried about happening as a result of an unclothed male torso that isn't a worry from everything else?

Plus the food in food shops tends to have come from warehouses, then loaded onto pallets and put in lorries, all sources of contamination. Which is why it comes sealed in containers, or you wash it when you get home.

Unless it's fresh bread. But you ought to be far more worried about everyone touching it with their hands than the off chance of a stray chest hair floating down onto it.

Yes, only beautiful people should be able to do most things. Who do these ugly people think they are? Grin

practy · 19/07/2016 19:21

When I was growing up, I don't remember any men going topless, except on the beach. I much preferred it.

silvermantela · 19/07/2016 19:31

I can definitely see your point, but as a whole do think women have more advantages in hot weather in lots of cases- e.g in office today most of the women were as cool as possible in smart-ish skirts and dresses, bare legs and arms, and sandals/heels in bare feet, but still looked presentable, where the men still had long trousers, shoes and socks on and the coolest they could get was switching to a short sleeved shirt.

Obviously men can wear less to be cooler but there aren't many options that are still smart enough to be acceptable as professional wear. Same as formal occasions such as weddings/funerals etc - think women do have generally a lot more options in the heat. For me that's worth not being able to take my top off to go round asdas!

WoahSlowDown · 19/07/2016 19:32

I think men and women regardless of how they look should at least wear vest type of tops when the are at the shops or similar places.

I guess it's ok at a park to go topless or wear a bikini top.

HelpfulChap · 19/07/2016 19:41

I wouldn't do it and think it is unnecessary.

But not sure I could be bothered to make a fuss about it (in the store).

trafalgargal · 19/07/2016 19:57

Its pretty revolting in a crowded street. , not the look , it's when their sweaty bodies brush against you as they pass you by. I don't want random male sweat on my arms (or female either for that matter but women seem to be better at body space)

YourNewspaperIsShit · 19/07/2016 20:49

Where I live it's very common. I'm in pretty much the coldest part of England so any sign of sun and everyone has their kit off. But it's really unnecessary in a supermarket, they're air conditioned with fridges in most isles ffs Hmm DP did it getting out of the car today but just for the walk from car to house as he was overheating and had no water.

Really pisses me off that we can't get away with it, i honestly don't think we could wear bikini tops in the same places they go topless. Not where I live anyway as they're topless on the main St, in shops, etc.

Sparklingbrook · 19/07/2016 20:59

Bleurgh, I don't understand the need really. I have seen lots of men in transit vans topless today. Surely the seatbelt chafes? Yuk.

ailith · 19/07/2016 21:00

It sounds vile. I have yet to see it where I live. Thankfully.
Anyway, why is it never the Jamie Dornan types who display like this.? Why is it only the pug ugly, fat ones?
Bleurgh

I distinctly remember young woman late 20s on a push bike on a greener part of Stockholm cycling past me and my new boyfriend, top less. Hot summer day, as if it was totally appropriate. I love Sweden but I remember it feeling pretty shocking still. Circa 1991 😀 fantastic and goes to show that you can take your top if hot day in certain parts of Europe!

BringMeTea · 19/07/2016 21:10

Men who do this are not 'keepers'. That is certain.

Londonlassy · 19/07/2016 21:17

It's foul. Foul

WeeM · 19/07/2016 21:22

In Scotland this phenomenon is known as 'taps aff'....

ABCAlwaysBeCunting · 19/07/2016 21:26

I think it's minging. I can't stand seeing men wandering around shirtless in summer, no matter what their physique. But I also hate seeing women wearing too little in hot weather too. Sorry, but even if you have the body of Taylor Swift, wearing hot pants and bikini bra in an east London Tesco is a no-no, IMHO.

The very worst thing I saw was a guy wearing a black string vest in a pub last summer. The image is burned onto my brain. I had no idea you could even still buy string vests.

cluecu · 19/07/2016 21:59

I definitely have more things to be concerned about in my day-to-day life and I'm laid-back. Maybe chill out ☺

Theydontknowweknowtheyknow · 19/07/2016 22:00

I think it's just the fact that they can whip it off and go around without worrying whereas women who are breastfeeding constantly have to justify if a bit of boob shows.

Very double standardy.

Incognita82 · 19/07/2016 23:25

I was in Waitress earlier today. Topless middle age man in lycra cycling shorts was lurking near the salad stuff. Not sure which was worse, the idea that he wanted to show off his bod to all the sex deprived matrons in Waitrose in the hope of pulling one, or the fact that maybe his top was so sweaty from cycling he just had to remove it..

Put me right off my rocket and watercress salad it did!

DeadGood · 19/07/2016 23:29

Bleurgh, I still remember having to serve a topless guy in a supermarket years ago. I don't care about the temperature thing, I care that it grosses me out! Put a shirt on.

janey77 · 19/07/2016 23:32

They get chucked out of where I work, mainly cos we don't want them sweating over communal leather seats 😂

KittensandKnitting · 20/07/2016 00:23

Not in Waitrose 😱
