Men With Their Tops Off In Public Places because it's hot.

EverySongbirdSays · 19/07/2016 17:01

Was in ASDA and this bloke just walking round doing his shopping with no top on, belly hanging over shorts. Yes, it's hot and what not but it's just such male privilege.

If a woman walked around in just her bra because it's so hot, she'd be body shamed and cat called and possibly even assaulted and told she'd "asked for it"

And yet men can go around comfy while we suffer. The injustice!!

I used to know whether i needed a cardi or not by whether my NDN wore a top or not.

Sadly, he's got old now and nothing will part him from his dressing gown :o

JackieAndHyde4eva · 20/07/2016 00:35

Taking it all the way though, how many women would want to do the shopping topless? Even if it was ok.

  1. it is ok. Its just not legal Angry
  2. it doesnt matter how many would want to, it matters that those who do, can. If men can.
Lucked · 20/07/2016 00:40

I hate it, in Glasgow it's a thing -taps aff.

Saw quite a few strutting around on my drive home.

Maz2444466 · 20/07/2016 00:53

Hahaha KittensandKnitting 'Not in Waitrose'

I do my bulk shopping in Asda and treats in Waitrose and it is a totally different shopping experience! Don't mind top off if the guy is toned and fit as its something nice to look at as I'm doing the weekly shop. Terribly superficial sorry 😱

EverySongbirdSays · 20/07/2016 01:09

"maybe you should chill out"

Gee, thanks for your enriching contribution to the thread.

Obviously, I have more important things in my life, and life has more important things in general, I was just struck by the unfairness of it. As another poster says, for a woman, completely topless would be gross indecency and therefore worthy of a caution.

I was struck by the unfairness of it. And the comment about women who are berated or penalised for breastfeeding in public is spot on.

It's one rule for men, another for women.

As this IS a discussion forum, I thought it was an interesting discussion..... Hmm it's not like I'm thinking of calling the police, I have plenty of chill but thanks for the concern.

Sorry "indecent exposure" I put "gross indecency" thinking they were pretty much the same thing

And they aren't.

At. All.

I think it's totally unacceptable.
I saw 3 men this afternoon when I was on my way to pick my daughter up from school and they had shorts on and no top.
They were just walking about and one of them was with a woman and she didn't seem bothered at all.

whattodowiththepoo · 20/07/2016 06:31

"Belly hanging over shorts"
"If a woman did it she would be body shamed"

hastheworldgonemad · 20/07/2016 06:40

The ones who shouldn't do this do it and the ones you wouldn't mind seeing do it don't.

That's the crap bit. Grin

Mislou · 20/07/2016 06:53

I don't see why it's too hot for them to wear clothes like everyone else. If you go to Spanish or Italian cities in the Summer, the men manage to wear shirts and long trousers to go to work and shops. Maybe because they're more used to it.

Theydontknowweknowtheyknow · 20/07/2016 07:18

OP it might make you happy to know that there is apparently a current trend among young women to go braless or wear bralettes (without all that push up wired crap).

Of course there is then the problem of nipples showing through t-shirts so pasties have been invented which plaster over your boobs so stop your nips showing. And then there are the comments that you might expect in public...

Which is kind of the point you're making isn't it? That women have to go through certain hoops to make their natural bodies acceptable in public whereas guys can just whip it off and out and feel supremely confident about it.

Bails2014 · 20/07/2016 07:28

You wouldn't get it in Waitrose.

HairyMoose · 20/07/2016 07:42

Where I live men walk around in just board shorts everywhere and women in bikini tops with sarongs or board shorts. We don't have body shaming or anything, in fact it's pretty normal. Might just be a UK thing as I lived in the UK and noticed people were more conservatively dressed. I noticed only in Bournemouth people walking around half dressed but nowhere else really. In Greece, some people are actually naked walking around the beach! Shock

NoahVale · 20/07/2016 07:48

i dont like it either.
i was passed by a jogger the other day, simply wearing lyrex shorts.
i didnt think it was too hard to wear a vest or something when jogging

MrsMook · 20/07/2016 07:50

I was musing about this the other day as I saw a topless man driving out of a car park. There's not many logical reasons why as a woman with small boobs (so therefore I can be comfortable without a bra/ top) can't be doing the same. In fact, my mammaries are smaller than the ones that tend to end up being displayed, certainly in terms of back measurements, and pretty similar in terms of cup size. Also mine have performed nutritional services to society so have been rather useful Grin

Personally I find lighter clothes more comfortable so I'll decline to take on a one woman mission to challenge this myself.

I won't begrudge the runners. They tend to have a decent physique otherwise they'd jiggle uncomfortably.

Marmalade85 · 20/07/2016 07:53

I work in the city and men have to wear suits even on hot days like today and the women are practically half naked with big bits of wobbly cellulite hanging out from under too short dresses, some with flip flops (!) on.

sorenofthejnaii · 20/07/2016 07:55

I wonder what men feel about seeing men with man boobs? Lots of them about.

supersoftcuddlytoys · 20/07/2016 08:39

I work in The City too and noticed the same thing Marmalade85! Us Women get to wear flimsy / strappy dresses, and sandals. The Men - suits ties and leather shoes. Not sure how that fits in with "Male Privilege" ?

EverySongbirdSays · 20/07/2016 09:29

This is EXACTLY the point I'm making. That and if we did the same we could expect objectification/abuse/potentially assault.

Oh and poo - it's been noted and responded to and then noted again, I referred the second "noter" to my original response.

I had Son 5 in hospital, during a heat wave and the Euros, a few years back.

You wouldn't believe (or maybe yous would) the number of sweaty, fat, bald, middle aged, pot-bellied men who slouched onto the antenatal ward either in football strip as if they were 12, or with naked torsos...

Their first act was always to walk across the ward and put the TV onto football coverage as well. I kept having to get nurses to come and firmly switch it off.

JoffreyBaratheon · 20/07/2016 10:26

And yes, a similarly pot bellied lady would be body shamed (probably by those very same bald, fat men).

I never got the football strip, either. My 14 year old plays for two teams - he plays football for hours a day, runs, is about to start training in the gym - he looks fine in full football strip as leisurewear. A 40 year old flabby skinhead who has not kicked a football in 30 years - not so much. The woman equivalent would never even happen.

P1nkP0ppy · 20/07/2016 10:28

There was a topless bloke dripping sweat over the salad counter the supermarket yesterday, I turned around and walked out. I certainly won't be buying from salad counters again, utterly gross.

Ifailed · 20/07/2016 11:08

I take it you haven't been to a football ground recently? You'll see plenty of 40 year-olds who haven't kicked a football in 30 years wearing replica kit, from both sexes.

JoffreyBaratheon · 20/07/2016 15:42

Ifailed - I was talking about places like hospitals (and we've been talking about shops). A flabby unfit footie fan in full regalia AT a football match isn't what we're on about here, is it?

twittwooery · 20/07/2016 15:43

I still find it ridiculous how many say women would be body shamed if they did it/ get abuse and this thread proves that the men are body shamed and people may say but they don't say anything in person. That may be true but what about facial expressions, voluntary / involuntary ?
