To keep all the doors and windows closed in hot weather

My house is well insulated. Its far warmer outside than inside.

So its not crazy to just keep everything shut right?

I'm not sure - I think air circulation helps you to feel cooler. I've heard that shutting blinds & curtains on south side of the house is the most important.

Just do what is best for you. Everyone copes with the heat in different ways. I've got up this morning and opened all the windows because I can't go outside until later. I love the fresh air coming through the house. But if it gets too hot in would probably close them.

If you're crazy so am I. I have all the windows closed, all the blinds drawn and all the internal doors shut. Makes a huge difference in keeping it cool.

DP insists on opening every window and door when it's hot. I don't think it helps. I'm sitting here with the blinds closed and the window open a bit and feel much better. Glad he's out.

I have actually found the perfect combination in the living room.

I've opened the windows but I've pulled the curtains as wide as they will go at the top to block the sun, whilst tying the middle with a tie to leave a large gap so the air can come through. Seems to be working

Housekeeper in Lanzarote told us to shut all shutters, windows and blinds to keep place cool all day, so we do that here now. better for the hayfever blight on my household too!

I tried the windows and curtains closed yesterday. It did not work at all. Today we have all windows and doors open and feel much better. I'm dreading the afternoon though

Opening windows lets hot air into the house.

We have windows shut and blinds closed during the day and it keeps the house much cooler than having the windows open.

I'm torn on this. At the moment, I have every window in the house open and all the wooden blinds down on the south facing windows, so hopefully a through breeze can get in but the sun is blocked out. But yesterday it was utterly still, no breeze at all, so it probably would have made more sense to have the windows shut.

Windows open, curtains closed here.

I need air but hate the hot sun (unless I'm abroad and have a pool and the ocean a few feet away).

And a freezer full of pina colada lollies.

I have all my doors and windows shut, but the loft hatch open to let the heat escape into the roof. The loft floor is well insulated so the heat doesn't escape and the bedrooms get too hot.

It probably depends on your house. We are in a garden flat with excellent cross breezes so open everything front and back and put ceilings fans on. The movement of air is good and really helps.

I have already closed all my windows. In the early morning, I open all the windows and let the house cool down. By about 8:20am, I close all the windows except for skylights and fan windows which I crack. I close all the curtains. At the moment, my indoor outdoor radio thermometer tells me that it is 24 degrees inside my house, but 28.3 degrees outside my house.

I will open up all the doors and windows in the late afternoon/early evening when the inside has caught up to the outside.

We still have a few flat top sheets in this house. So we can dump the duvets and just sleep under sheets with a thin blanket.

Where I live, we often have a couple of weeks in Summer where it's well above 30. I open all the windows and balcony door before I go to bed, then shut up everything, including shutters on the windows during the day. Unless there's a rain storm when I open up everything again to try and get a cool breeze going through the place. I just put towels in front of the windows if the rain is coming in.

Our front room is like a freezer all year round, so no need to open anything. Unfortunately, the neighbour's children like to play a game called 'how many windows and doors on the street can we kick our football against' (wish I was joking), so can't enjoy that room much today. Only open the windows in the evening, let the cool air circulate the house (and cool the bedroom, which was hotter than the circles of hell last night). It's less likely to let bastard flies in as well.

All windows and doors are open first thing in the morning. Then shut and DD's bedroom (french doors, loft room) has its curtain and blinds closed.

Downstairs is not too bad temperature wise anyway. so we leave curtains open. Dinning room is east, so not too bad as sun is away soon and we are hardly in the living room (west facing) before early evening anyway.

I open all bedroom windows as soon as manageable and they are left open over night.

We have curtains shut on the sunny side but windows open here. But I'm in the north so there's still a bit of a breeze.

I play rotating windows in our house. South East facing windows closed until midday along with the blinds then open when the sun stops hitting windows, North West windows open from first thing until around 3pm then they get closed along with blinds. The brunt of the sun hits a tree on our south facing side where we have no windows.

Our indoor temperature rarely peaks above 20° when we do this and we all sleep under blankets at night. However I do instantly melt when walking outside.

That's what they've always done when Ive lived in hot countries in Europe, had closed blinds with slats, that allow breeze in but keep sun out, but windows open. Even the doors had slatted shutters.

In the uk, our house is old with thick stone walls. It never gets hot! It's always freezing, which is great in this weather, but not so much in winter! I close the curtains on the sunny side of the house, but leave windows open if I'm in.

windows open, curtains closed or mid closed. lovely in the front, really cool.
The back is south facing, lovely for washing and sun bathers, not so good for those who don't like the heat.
