To keep all the doors and windows closed in hot weather

My house is well insulated. Its far warmer outside than inside.

So its not crazy to just keep everything shut right?

It helps if you have thick walls and marble/ stone flooring / shutters which of course most houses and flats do in hot countries.

YANBU, I'm keeping all doors and windows closed. Curtains closed too. I love fresh air, but today there's none, it's just hot stuffy air. In the winter I love having windows open, beautiful fresh, cold air wafting through the house. I genuinely can't cope with the heat. I was tempted to go and lie on my bathroom floor earlier, to feel the lovely coolness of the tiles. But even the tiles are warm! It's 30 degrees here today. I struggle once the temperature goes above about 12 degrees! A cool bath will be needed soon.

I'm from Oz, definitely keep everything closed on a hot day! (then open everything up & let the cool breeze in at night)

SquinkiesRule · 19/07/2016 16:27

We do that too, I keep the windows and blinds closed on the sunny side (back of house) in the morning, and open the cool side, then rotate. The house is always cooler inside than outside in this weather.

EllyMayClampett · 19/07/2016 16:53

Okay it's now 30.6C outside and 28.4 inside. I shall give up and open the windows soon!

Beautifulstorm · 19/07/2016 16:58

I've got every window and door open. The only reason to close them would be if you had air conditioning

LowDudgeon · 19/07/2016 17:01

It's 30-31 outside here (going by the Internet, I haven't got an outside therm

Oops
Cat just got off my lap & knocked my finger on to the post button Grin

30/31 outside but only 23 inside (we have one of those intelligent thermostats)

Our house does have a vestibule though which does an amazing job of insulating the hall from outside.

LowDudgeon · 19/07/2016 17:05

& all our windows have been closed all day. If they'd been open it would probably be 30 inside too Grin

Our house is like a sauna, brilliant in the winter as takes very little heating but awful in the summer. Can't have windows open more than a crack because of pets and my phobia of flying insects, am seriously considering investing in an air conditioner. Kept the living room curtains (which are thick, lined and dark coloured) closed all morning while the sun was on the front of the house so it stayed fairly cool in here until mid afternoon but the rest of the house is stifling and in here isn't much better now.

BeckerLleytonNever · 19/07/2016 17:57

same here OP.

  1. theres no breeze anyway so whats the point.

  2. bloody fucking insects-wasps and flies are the bane of our lives, and we choke on fly spray-wish they fucking would.

  3. even though its hot in here its cooler than outside.

  4. we live right by heathrow airport so between the heat and the bloody rackewt from planes (every 35 seconds) id rather stifle inside.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 19/07/2016 18:36

I like movement of air, so I open all windows but close curtains/blinds wherever the sun is shining on the windows. Which obviously changes from am to pm.

I couldn't bear to have all the windows closed in this sort of weather. Even a very slight breeze will find its way in, and it's lovely.

amandaxalice · 19/07/2016 18:46

I always keep my windows shut because I can't stand it when bugs get in the house! But I close the blinds/curtains as that seems to not let the sun in the rooms which makes it cooler.
