AIBU to think 'cheers for leaving me up shit creek, society'?

I've lost my job and used this username to ask for extreme budgeting advice (which I got, nothing but love for MN for that :D )
I have no kids, was TTC (hence using this site) of course this has now stopped.
Myself and DH are under 25.
I have had job breaks in the last 2yrs, where I lost my job and had to find a new one. In total I've spent a few months unemployed in the last few years. I always do my best to find a job quickly but its not always easy.
Anyhow.
I tried to claim JSA, My initial claim was refused (for income based JSA) with no reason given. So I tried to claim the other type (Think its called contributions based) And was told I hadn't worked enough, fair enough. so I demanded an answer to why I couldn't claim JSA (income based) was told its because my partner earns over 16k a year, barely mind, but does. He's on 15.6k (Per year) after taxes and NI. he's paid 4 weekly and gets 1.2k per pay. however before deductions is on about 17k.
AIBU to think this is fucking shit? Our finances are so badly at breaking point we've had to apply for a debt relief order (referred to as mini bankruptcy) work is hard to come by. as of today there are 4 jobs within a 10 mile radius I can apply for and some of those have over 100 applicants(of course I've still applied but I'm prepared to be unemployed for a few months minimum) yet we can't even claim JSA for me.
PS. I'm also annoyed I was told to apply for income support, which I am not eligible for (not a carer/disabled/in education/no kids) but I applied for it anyway and today was told I'm not eligible for that either!
can't get housing benefit, still waiting to find out about council tax reduction but unlikely, can't get JSA, can't get income support. I'm sorting this the best I can (Advice isn't what I'm looking for as such but is definitely welcome!) I'm just ranting really.
In what world is it ok to leave people this badly up shit creek? I campaigned against lots of welfare 'reforms' (read: cuts) and will contnue to do so but even I didn't realize it would be this bad :(

People get work on cruise ships etc

Yea. people from Phlippenes, Indonesians, Caribbean and African people do. My one and only cruise was wonderful chatting to them all. Smile

daisychain01 · 15/07/2016 22:07

Could you move closer to Newport, the work situation and general economy has picked up in the area due to inward investment.

As you don't have kids, I'm thinking you may have more options to move around a bit more?

HelenaDove · 15/07/2016 22:15

Yeah you are childless OP so suck it up Hmm

SHE CANT AFFORD TO MOVE!

Stickerrocks · 15/07/2016 22:32

Dog walking/ baby sitting/ house sitting - you need to live in an area where people can afford the luxury of paying someone for these services. It's possible in Cardiff, but unlikely in parts of the Valleys where everyone is in the same boat.

KitKats28 · 15/07/2016 22:43

What planet are some people on? MOVING COSTS MONEY. Which the OP doesn't have.

If you are in a rented property you have to find somewhere else. Depending on the area, there might not be many places available. I've just had a quick look where I live, there are precisely 3 properties that are suitable. So you find somewhere; 15 other people have looked at it. The person who can move quickest secures it.

So....you decide you like the property. You have to come up with admin fee, first month's rent, deposit equal to another month's rent. So on a £500 per month property you are looking at approximately £1200. Where are you going to magic this up from? Then you have to give notice on your current property. Either way, you will probably end up paying for an overlap and having to wait God knows how long to get your deposit back from the property you are in.

I sometimes wonder if the majority of people on here actually have any idea how people on or below the poverty line live. The "working poor" is a reality, not just a dystopian concept.

AdultingIsNotWhatIExpected · 15/07/2016 22:47

Arent there Ofstead rulings on childminding and babysitting or does it depend on the number of kids you are looking after
If the kids are minded in their own home, you're good to go, it's up to the parents
If the kids are minded in the minders house, it's an Ofstead hobby
Still doesn't help the OP as there's so many qualified people looking for babysitting work, an unqualified one will be passed over

PersianCatLady · 15/07/2016 23:07

its damn obvious that age discrimination is coming into play here

Sorry but where specifically is there any age discrimination here?

LilacInn · 15/07/2016 23:09

Age threshold for tax credits.

PersianCatLady · 15/07/2016 23:20

Age threshold for tax credits.

I realised it was tax credits two seconds after I pressed the "post message" button. I can't believe I was so stupid.

Thanks

BlackeyedSusan · 15/07/2016 23:50

what work have you done?
what is there within walking distance of your home?

can you babysit for neighbours, where you may have the advantage of being known a bit?
would volunteering in a charity shop etc help get experience?
gardening?
seasonal work?
car washing?

RepentAtLeisure · 16/07/2016 00:05

I find it interesting that you are blaming society for your lack of prospects?

I think she has every right to complain that under 25 year olds are not allowed to draw some benefits. I bet the government is happy enough to take taxes from her under 25 year old DP. It was a bullshit decision made by posh boys who think everyone has rich parents to support them if things fall through.

what is the funding like for students in Wales? Would you consider going to uni/college? My saas loan give me £6500 a year to live off, which is not a lot, but better than £0 if i wasn't working, plus at the end of it you have a qualification and more chances of getting a job.

donajimena · 16/07/2016 08:27

Hang on.. someone mentioned call centre work at home. There was a thread on here which mentioned a company where you phone people to remind them of their appointments (NHS) I'll see if I can find it...

NoahVale · 16/07/2016 08:33

it not what you know, its who you know!

old adage is true

do you have any friends who have jobs ?

Moreisnnogedag · 16/07/2016 08:34

Of course a phone is a necessity if you are job hunting and moving is never a cheap option. I have never had a deposit returned to me in anything less than a month. You usually have to pay one months rent in advance and at least one month rent as deposit. So that's at least a grand that the OP would either have to have spare or borrow. In addition they'd have to at least hire a man with a van to move their stuff which would be another £50. So only after five months would they start saving money from moving.

Op its shit. I'm always amazed by how little people are expected to survive on. Yes people can exist on £50 a month for food but it's crap and horrible in lots of ways. Rant away.

PersianCatLady · 16/07/2016 09:23

Something I suddenly thought late last night was given your circumstances there is absolutely no way that you would have qualified for income support.

Here are the criteria for it:
To qualify for Income Support you must be all 5 of the following:

  1. pregnant or a carer or a lone parent with a child under 5 or, in some cases, unable to work because you’re sick or disabled
  2. between 16 and Pension Credit qualifying age
  3. you have no income or a low income and no more than £16,000 in savings (your partner’s income and savings will be taken into account)
  4. working less than 16 hours a week and your partner must also work less than 24 hours a week (you may still qualify if you do unpaid voluntary work or go on parental or paternity leave).
  5. living in England, Scotland or Wales - there are different rules for Northern Ireland

The reason that I am making this point is that I would be slightly sceptical of the information that your job centre is giving you.

Girlgonewild · 16/07/2016 10:31

Persion, it may be because her household income is £15k (she lives with working partner) which is why most housewives don't get it.
I don't see why working on a cruise ship should be written off and no it's not just foreigners who work on them. It can be lots of fun, In fact quite a few entertainers from the UK started out that way. The other work I've done is live in at UK holiday camp which provides your accommodation too. These are not impossible jobs to do and worth applying for.

OhTheRoses · 16/07/2016 10:54

The op still hasn't explained why she lost her job and doesn't have references.

OP if you are 25 I simply don't understand why you and your partner can't give notice on you flat and move to where there are jobs.

My Bulgarian cleaner with little English has cheap digs, sends money home for her child and cleans through an agency, running a cheap car. Works about 40 hours a week.

I don't think you should get benefits, I think you should get on your bike and reskill if necessary.

You and your boyfriend certainly shouldn't be thinking about starting a,family until you are able to fund yourselves.

BeyondBeyondBeyondBeyondBeyond · 16/07/2016 11:06

Do you have a degree? Going to uni/college is a good idea, if possible? The loan will pay fees and you should (I know I do) get a grant on top of it, and if college a bus pass too.

If travel is difficult, have a look at the open uni?

BeyondBeyondBeyondBeyondBeyond · 16/07/2016 11:08

And phone wise, if you have a DMP, you can add your phone contract onto it, keep the phone and get a payg SIM card? If that saves any money?

merrymouse · 16/07/2016 11:15

What do you want to do?

What experience do you have?

What training could you do?

Don't get rid if your phone! In 2016 they are essential.

BeyondBeyondBeyondBeyondBeyond · 16/07/2016 11:19

I don't work anymore due to my health, but as I know we are in the same area - if by some massive coincidence you have worked for me in the past, I will provide a reference for you.
