Aibu regarding bad spelling & grammar in DD's report?

As the title suggests, my DD received her school report last week and it is littered with bad spelling and poor grammar. I'm quite annoyed as A) my daughter's teacher is capable of these things and B) that the Deputy Head has supposedly signed it off! (Implying she has read and approved it, however the signature looks printed to me) So aibu to comment on these things in a polite way on the form I have to return tomorrow? I've put it off because I'm torn between looking like an arsehole and the fact that a teacher should -in my eyes at least- be able to spell and write sentences correctly. Help!!!

I'd leave it tbh, of course the teacher can spell and write in sentences but was probably knackered and sick of writing the same/similar comments over and over again.

I know that's not an excuse and that school reports should be entirely personalised but some schools give a bank of statements that the teacher has to copy and paste, so that could be the reason. Unless you have concerns with the teaching or progress of your child then I wouldn't say anything.

The thing is, its something we'll keep and look back on. So obviously I'm a little upset that it's not the best 😕 And I dont know how they can get spelling so wrong when it's been done on a computer which I'm assuming has spellcheck? Colour with no u!

It sounds like the spellchecker is American then if there are mistakes like that. Maybe if you explain to the teacher that you'd like to keep it to look back on and there are so many mistakes then they might correct it and give it back. I just wouldn't go in and point out all of the mistakes as that might create conflict with the school where they have you down as 'one of those' parents. Nobody wants to be 'one of those'!

Colour with no u, makes it sound like the computer has spell checked but it is set to American English.

I'm a teacher, and would have no problem with being asked to re-do it. I'd be mortified if mine contained errors. Yes, everyone can make a mistake, and yes, it can corrected. Just ask nicely.

I know, I'm very aware that I don't want to be 'one of those' parents, hence the delay in response! The comment form only goes to the teacher with no requirement for them to show a senior, so would it really make a difference for me to say it to them as opposed to it being written? I don't tend to be the one doing drop off/pick up so don't have an opportunity to say it face to face.

Also, they have written 'full atop' instead of full stop. I appreciate it must be something they write often, but then I'd expect it to be something they've mastered!

Do you honestly care that much? It's not like she has written it in a foreign language and you need to memorise what it says, you'll know what it says in 10 years time. I don't get what the problem is...

No way would I mention it.

This teacher has finished teaching DD. If the teacher has poor spelling and grammar the damage has already been done.

If not, and there's been no damage, equally there's no point in complaining.

If you look back on it later the poor spelling still won't reflect badly on your DD.

'Full atop' is clearly a typo not a spelling mistake. Your child's teacher definitely kows how to spell 'stop'.

Tbh, if 'color' and 'atop' are the the type of mistakes she's made, then I think yabvvu. It is exhausting and extremely time consuming to write 30 end of year reports amongst all the many other end of year tasks. The poor teacher is human, tiny mistakes like the ones you mentioned really aren't worth stressing over.

I think there is a problem here actually. At my school reports go through 3 checks before being sent out. I would not think you were 'one of those parents' if you contacted in. all you need to do is draw their attention to it and say in future maybe they need to have more checks of the reports. As you say, reports might be kept or shown to family and one with mistakes all over isn't really good enough.

Not sure the examples given show sadly lacking grammar? Typos do not indicate lack of teaching ability, unless of course your DC is taking a touch typing course.

The examples I've given are the tip of the iceberg! I've obviously shown it to grandparents, aunts, uncles etc and everyone noticed the errors. I'm not trying to drag the teacher down, I've got family members who teach so I completely sympathise with how exhausted they get, and writing reports is a very long task. I just can't understand how it's been read by two teachers and still arrived to us with all of the mistakes that it has?

YABU to describe these mistakes as poor spelling /grammar. They are typos. Yes they should have been picked up, but it shouldn't be a major issue if you are otherwise happy with this teacher

By making a typo? Teachers are actually human. Or was that a secret I wasn't supposed to share?

Fwiw OP I'm a teacher and I would be ok with you noting there were a few errors and asking for a reprint of that particular page. You may have to wait a few days though as I am absolutely on my knees at the moment and have more important things to do.

YABVVVU. Do you want the teacher to take time away from teaching the class to correct the errors? Or are you expecting them to do it at home?

Hi, I'm a teacher and I would like to know. 4 or 5 years ago the computer system cut the last couple of lines off all my reports when printing. I don't see the printed copy, it goes to my head of department and then they are distributed in sealed envelopes. I wrote around 300 reports, all with the last 2 lines cut off. I only ever found out because 1 parent asked me about the report. So that was 299 sitting at home wondering why I couldnt write a full sentance! Mortified.
I'm so glad she told me as I raised it with my head of department and it hasn't happened since.
You can ask the teacher in a nice way.

No, sorry, I don't want them to rewrite it or correct it, but I think they should realise that they need to check for these things before handing them out in future. I've only pointed out a few minor spelling mistakes because I'd be here all day copying the grammatical errors!

Well, if you want us to make a reasoned comment about asking teacher to rewrite, maybe show the iceberg, because I couldn't be bothered about the egs you have given.
