Aibu regarding bad spelling & grammar in DD's report?

ItWentInMyEye · 14/07/2016 23:40

As the title suggests, my DD received her school report last week and it is littered with bad spelling and poor grammar. I'm quite annoyed as A) my daughter's teacher is capable of these things and B) that the Deputy Head has supposedly signed it off! (Implying she has read and approved it, however the signature looks printed to me) So aibu to comment on these things in a polite way on the form I have to return tomorrow? I've put it off because I'm torn between looking like an arsehole and the fact that a teacher should -in my eyes at least- be able to spell and write sentences correctly. Help!!!Smile

I agree with you, Veterinari; I would be personally embarrassed to have issued such a report, and I myself would consider it a "Stop press!" moment if such a report passed over my desk.
However, in the OP's position, I would pick my battles. I think that if the errors were of a different nature, indicating ignorance rather than fingerslip, I actually would make a point of mentioning them. But the fact remains that whoever receives the complaint is likely to feel slightly miffed, and in this case I don't feel that it's worth it.

ItWentInMyEye · 15/07/2016 07:34

I'd not considered the teachers might take it out on my daughter Confused I'd thoroughly hope they wouldn't.

I once sent an email to the school office, as the letters home always had spelling mistakes in. I just asked if the letters could be proof read more thoroughly before being sent. I am a proof reader so any mistakes annoy me! Confused

Teachers have roughly 30 pupils in their class. Each one of these pupils has a report. The teachers do them in their own time. You'd look like an arsehole for pointing out a few spelling mistakes. Does it really matter that much to you?

MrsKCastle · 15/07/2016 07:43

I'm a teacher and I would want you to tell me. I'd be very embarrassed if my reports were full of errors.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 15/07/2016 07:43

Shock at the handful of teachers on this thread who don't think spelling and grammar is important.

acasualobserver · 15/07/2016 07:43

The examples I've given are the tip of the iceberg!

It would help if you actually told us about the really bad mistakes you found. There is little point in getting exercised about the occasional typo or spell check errors.

ItWentInMyEye · 15/07/2016 07:44

It's not just a few spelling mistakes though, I'm not that pedantic!

OP posts:
mouldycheesefan · 15/07/2016 07:45

You have given no examples except for a typing error and an American spelling correction.
So how can anyone here advise?
Do people really show the reports to aunts, uncles, Uncle Tom Cobley and all? 😂

AppleSetsSail · 15/07/2016 07:47

Is it a typo you're upset about or grammatical mistakes?

In the case of writing hundreds of reports, a few typos will make it through even a fairly rigorous review process.

Poor sentence structure is a different matter, or using 'affect' when it should be 'effect', etc.

ItWentInMyEye · 15/07/2016 07:48

Quick example: She is likes to draw and use diffrent colors

ItWentInMyEye · 15/07/2016 07:49

And yes, we are a very close family and those members asked to see the reports. I'm hardly going to be precious about it and say no they can't!

Reindeerlilly I know this is meant in a kind way, but I actually find your comment quite patronising. Reports may be done in our own time, but they're a part of the job that all teachers are fully aware of when they take the job. We don't do them out of the goodness of our hearts. We do them because we're professionals who have a duty to communicate with parents. It's not acceptable for any professional to be sending out important documents littered with errors. It just isn't. Saying it's ok for teachers because we work hard is demeaning IMO.

' Shock at the handful of teachers on this thread who don't think spelling and grammar is important.'

Literally no one is saying that hat. They're saying that they wouldn't ask the teacher for a new report because of a few typos.

ItWentInMyEye · 15/07/2016 07:55

I'm not asking for a new report!!!!

She is likes to draw and use diffrent colors

That's pretty poor.

SalemSaberhagen · 15/07/2016 08:00

The Deputy who signed it off doesn't do any teaching, so I'd have thought she'd have been able to spend the time checking properly

Hahahaha. Hahahaha......oh, you were serious?

Middleoftheroad · 15/07/2016 08:01

I would leave it. I've noticed this before, but have ignored it over the years as it would be a bit OTT to report it.

acasualobserver · 15/07/2016 08:01

Quick example: She is likes to draw and use diffrent colors

Is this the worst example? How many are of this order? It's impossible to make a judgement without all the evidence. Why not just type out the report - identifying details redacted - and then we can respond properly?

diddl · 15/07/2016 08:05

I can't believe people think that it should be ignored because the teacher has to do lots of reports & might be upset!

Doesn't anyone think that kids deserve better than a school report with spelling mistakes?

ItWentInMyEye · 15/07/2016 08:05

I did correct myself with that comment Salem.

That's the standard of maybe 1/4 of it, don't have time to type it out as its an A4 page and I'm getting 3 kids ready for school Smile

Colour with no U is the American spelling.
What is wrong with that???

I find this shocking

ItWentInMyEye · 15/07/2016 08:12

When I was typing the quick example I also noticed that colour has been written twice, both with different spellings in the same sentence. So it surely can't be American spellcheck?

OP posts:
Evergreen17 · 15/07/2016 08:13

I am pretty sure Ernest Hemingway spelled Colour as Color, since he happened to be American. Is that a problem for you OP?

Why dont you see if the Queen is up for teaching your son.

I teach kids science and I have an accent.

I also lived in American and say aluminium or aluminum as I please.

Kids watch plenty of American shows anyway

And stop was a typo.

You might have no idea of the workload teachers have.

I make typing mistakes here all the time. This is not a newspaper

Evergreen17 · 15/07/2016 08:15

I meant lived in America
See. These things happen
