I've always had both as well as meat and veggies, dh thinks you don't.

No right or wrong answer, I do both or just one depending on my mood.

Lovecat · 15/07/2016 18:33

My mum is Irish and I grew up in the NW, but I'd never come across mash and roasties with Sunday dinner til I moved darn Sarf and met DH, who comes from Hampshire and was aghast that I only made roasties with a roast dinner.

However, my dad is from South Africa and his contribution to the Sunday dinner (apart from cauli cheese) was rice, a big dish of fried rice with onions. Apparently this is the done thing in SA? It's rather lovely, even if it is carb overload.

elliehopemum · 15/07/2016 18:39

I've always had one or other but I'm really not a fan of roast potatoes so usually leave them

Artandco · 15/07/2016 19:17

I wouldn't eat fish cake with extra carbs no, it's already potato and breadcrumbs. Would have with vegetables.

Have only had bread and butter with a meal on guide camp around 12

TheWeeBabySeamus1 · 15/07/2016 19:22

Whaaat? No bread? What happens to the left over gravy on your plate? Shock

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 15/07/2016 19:24

My mum does this.. I really like it!

Sparklesilverglitter · 15/07/2016 19:31

thewee my DH just Leaves the left over gravy on his plate Shock what a weirdo!
I'm sitting there enjoying my lovely bread to mop all mine up and he just sits there with a plate for of delicious gravy and does nothing so sometimes I steal it

squoosh · 15/07/2016 19:31

Notso give me midlife crisis ridden uncle over drippy friend any day. Mash is one mouthful of bland sameness after the other. A roast potato on the other hand is a veritable bounty of delights, crispy skin and fluffy interior!

Roast potatoes = Robert De Niro

Roast potatoes and mash = Robert DeNiro and Zac Efron in Dirty Grandpa.

TheWeeBabySeamus1 · 15/07/2016 19:35

That poor gravy Sparkles... at least you're around to make sure it gets the respect it deserves.

Notso · 15/07/2016 20:50

That's why the mash and roast are the ultimate combo squoosh.

user7755 · 15/07/2016 20:52

No. Mash goes with pie or sausages. Hope that helps

PaintedDrivesAndPolishedGrass · 15/07/2016 20:55

No. Roast with a roast. Mash is only included if you need to flesh out the meal due to lack of actual flesh on the plate.

mmgirish · 16/07/2016 01:21

Oh yes! Of course you have mash and roasties with your Sunday dinner! Who wouldn't?

Serialweightwatcher · 17/07/2016 11:30

I always do both if making roast dinner or Christmas dinner - think it's better to have choice and variety Grin

x2boys · 17/07/2016 11:40

My nana always did roast, mash and boiled and several different types of veg yorkshire puddings and crackling with pork i miss her roast dinnersSmile

x2boys · 17/07/2016 11:41

She was irish btw

Horehound · 17/07/2016 11:44

It's a bit over indulgent isn't it? Carbs with more carbs.. Although I don't "get" the hoo ha about roast dinners and slaving away for a day for one peasant style meal :s Fillet steak and king prawns for our dinner tonight. Can't wait! :)

BarbaraofSeville · 17/07/2016 12:06

Even Christmas dinner with bigger variety doesnt take all day, half a day at most, with lots of downtime and if you do it right you have enough leftovers that mean it's practically new year before you have to cook again and there will be leftovers for the freezer.

And I really don't get all this double carb angst - it's not like you're having twice as much, just a smaller amount of each for variety

fillet steak and King prawns are lovely too but hardly every day fare for most people.

Horehound · 17/07/2016 12:24

Barbara I don't think they take smaller portions of each to make up one portion of carbs. If you're going to make 2 or 3 types of potatoes you're hardly thinking about being healthy. They'll be shoveling it onto their plates.
My ex's mum spent half the day making roast and it was Alright at best. What a waste of timr and that it has to be oncr a week. Oh god! The rest of the family enjoyed it but I juse think it's average. Going on about Yorkshire puddings. Stuffing yourself on pastry..oh yeh great!

Scarydinosaurs · 17/07/2016 13:21

hore speak for yourself- if I were to have two types of potato, then I would just have two smaller portions to equal one portion.

Just because people like mash and roast potatoes together doesn't mean they've lost all sense of proportion. Some people just really like the potatoes!

WeAllHaveWings · 17/07/2016 13:32

Growing up dm always did a big pot of mash and a single roast potato each (2 if you were lucky).

m0therofdragons · 17/07/2016 13:35

We had roast potatoes with roast and mash the following day with the cold meat and veg. I really need to get back into that habit!

m0therofdragons · 17/07/2016 13:37

Who slaves away over a roast? Don't you just shove it all in the oven with some veg on the hob? Surely, once you've got the hang of timings, it's one of the easiest meals going?

Scarydinosaurs · 17/07/2016 13:41

mother exactly! Peel, stab, shove in hot oven tray, leave and start on the wine! Where is the problem??

m0therofdragons · 17/07/2016 13:46

Exactly scary. Occasionally I save some wine for the gravy too.... Not often though!GrinWine
