I've always had both as well as meat and veggies, dh thinks you don't.

To be frank, you can't have too many carbs on a roast. Mashed potatoes, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings. Bring it on. Veg just gets in the way.

harderandharder2breathe · 14/07/2016 20:13

Roasties are essential! I'll have mash if it's on offer but wouldn't cook it as well myself

Sciurus83 · 14/07/2016 20:15

Noooo! Roast and a mass of carrot and swede, but why would you double potato?!

Penfold007 · 14/07/2016 20:16

Interesting post. My dad is northern so roast potatoes and parsnips is 'normal' to him. DH is from Wales and his DM only does whole boiled potatoes with a roast. DM is Irish does boiled and roast with a roast. I've never been offered mashed with a roast have I missed something? Don't get me started on Yorkshire puds.

TheNaze73 · 14/07/2016 20:21

Mash on a roast, sounds weird full stop. Can't say I've ever had that

StickTheDMWhereTheSunDontShine · 14/07/2016 20:25

Only if it's roast taties and mashed swede.

OhThatThingAgain · 14/07/2016 20:27

Carb on carb action, I'd like to but my ever expanding arse says it's WRONG.

Mmmmm, drool. I'm northern and we always had mashed (or new) with a roast, I didn't get roast potatoes until I moved out and cooked for myself. Now it's always roast potatoes with a roast.

Chip butties, now that is the real double carb heaven Wink

JaneJefferson · 14/07/2016 20:33

Always two or three styles of potatoes - always roast, usually mashed as well and sometimes boiled or new as well. Occasionally also dauphinoise. Mashed and roast are lovely together, melting on the tongue especially with lashings of butter in the mash.

DonttouchthatLarry · 14/07/2016 20:38

My mum used to do roasted and boiled, I like both but sometimes just do roasties. Our local carvery is the best ever, there's plain boiled, plain roasted, cheesy mash, sauteed, baby new ones roasted in their skins with rosemary and daupinoise/gratin style with leeks.

DerelictMyBalls · 14/07/2016 20:40

I have never had mash & roasties together in a roast dinner but since reading this thread, I'm starting to consider it.

I am salivating so much right now. Your local carvery deserves a Michelin star.

Roast potatoes with a roast is a British thing I think. When we went to Canada for Christmas they had mash and I adore mash, but was totally gutted.

youcantakethegirloutof · 14/07/2016 20:43

Xmas day you have to have both roast & mash potatoes in our house or you are letting the team down!
Don't typically bother for a normal Sunday roast!

VinoTime · 14/07/2016 20:44
Shock

Mash is for sausages, not a roast dinner! Wink

Mmm. Sausages...

Roast potatoes all the way with a roast dinner. I'd find it odd to have two types of tatties. I'd rather have more veggies or a Yorkshire pud.

DanniiMinogue · 14/07/2016 22:24

My N.Irish mates have told me that they have mash, roast potatoes and chips.

AcheyMiddle · 14/07/2016 22:50

Oh come on. All those who are saying double carbs with a roast is wrong. Do you seriously not have jersey royals with your roast in spring? Especially if it's roast lamb?

imwithspud · 14/07/2016 22:51

We always do roasties but occasionally throw some mash or steamed baby potatoes in too. I wouldn't say you have to have both, depends on our mood really and if I can be bothered.

milkysmum · 14/07/2016 22:55

Northern and we always had mash and roasts- recently I'm trying to slim it down to just roasts for ease!

EastMidsMummy · 14/07/2016 23:17

Don't get why you'd want roast and mash. Just have more roast.

SpareHead3 · 14/07/2016 23:26

I never knew this was something people did until mn. It's been mentioned before on Christmas dinner threads.

I don't esp fancy it, it seems strange to me. Like having a helping of pasta with your roast dinner.

But blimey if you like it have it. Maybe I'm missing out on something here. I guess when you think about it Yorkshire pud seems strange if you analyse it, yet we have that.

whois · 14/07/2016 23:33

I like mash and roasties together #north

JudyCoolibar · 14/07/2016 23:34

Absolutely not. It would make it far too heavy.

talksensetome · 14/07/2016 23:39

Roasted - potatos, carrots & parsnips
Mashed either plain potatos or mashed with carrot and swede. I always do both and I am up north.

ApplesinmyPocket · 14/07/2016 23:42

DH not keen on roast potatoes but I love them, so I do both. I wouldn't say mash, lovely buttery creamy mash, was 'inferior' though! they're both good.

sirfredfredgeorge · 14/07/2016 23:42

Large family, small oven - you do mash.

it is the main reason not to have a large family, or to buy another oven for every extra person you add to keep up, but that gets expensive.
