I've always had both as well as meat and veggies, dh thinks you don't.

This is insanity to me!

Meat
Yorkshires
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Sprouts/Savoy cabbage/greens
Red cabbage
Stuffing maybe

ArmySal · 15/07/2016 09:39

Love pigs in blankets, cauliflower cheese is an abomination on a roast, how, with gravy?!

PatriciaHolm · 15/07/2016 09:39

Nope. But then I would never serve lasagne with chips ;-)

ConcreteUnderpants · 15/07/2016 09:43

Mash and roasties in this house, too.
Nom nom.
I also do Yorkshire puddings with chicken as they make perfect boats for the peas and lashings of gravy.

tibbawyrots · 15/07/2016 09:50

How many roast potatoes is enough? 😈

Artandco · 15/07/2016 09:51

I have 2-3 small roast potatoes usually

2rebecca · 15/07/2016 10:08

I don't, too much of a fangle doing 2 different types of spuds. My grandparents always did this though so I think it was common when women were expected to spend hours in the kitchen on a Sunday whilst men were down the pub. If you have the time and like this do it but it is unnecessary

MyBreadIsEggy · 15/07/2016 10:11

Always both!!

-Meat
-Roasties
-Mash
-Two, sometimes three types of vegetables
-Stuffing
-Yorkshire Puddings
-Gravy

Job done.
I'm excited for Sunday now Grin

Darnmysocks · 15/07/2016 10:20

Both for preference but sometimes just do mash if I'm feeling lazy. Always 2 or 3 veg and homemade yorkies whichever meat we're having. Really want a roast dinner now even though it's not 10.30 yet which is a bit worrying actually because the only other time I've craved a roast in the morning I was pregnant Shock

SestraClone · 15/07/2016 10:22

Roast potatoes only!

OutOfAces · 15/07/2016 10:35

I'm northern and definitely have both - my Mum and Nan always served both, same in restaurants/pubs. My Mum will usually do 2 meats (or if only one there will be a few sausages chucked in).
Yes to something cheesy too - cauliflower/leeks/brocolli etc. I love it with gravy. I drench my dinner in gravy.

DH's southern and his Mum's dinners will have significantly less gravy and only roast potatoes, and no cheesy dish. I sometimes can't bear to watch DH eat his dry, gravyless dinner.

Babysafari · 15/07/2016 10:58

Interesting!

Do you know the ironic thing is that I don't even particularly like mash and it's an extra faff! It's just something I've always done.

After reading that so many of you don't I might start giving the mash a miss sometimes and do extra potatoes and parsnips.

Yes and next question.

How many roast potatoes do you have?

OP posts:
Fooshufflewickbannanapants · 15/07/2016 11:04

Always both here and not really any extra faff as I just bung them in with the meat when the potatoes are half boiled.

BorpBorpBorp · 15/07/2016 11:08

Nope to mash. I had 1 barmy relative who was, to quote, "mad for mash". Roast dinner is:

Meat (or veg alternative)
Yorkshire or suet pudding
Stuffing
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Boiled/steamed veg, at least 3 of: carrots, broccoli, cabbage/spring greens/sprouts/kale, cauliflower, peas, green beans, broad beans, mashed swede.
Gravy
If having cauliflower, white sauce

How many roast potatoes? As many as possible. Personally I could have a full plate with nothing else and be happy.

MikeWasowski · 15/07/2016 11:09

For Christmas dinner I do both. Normal roast, either. Might start doing both all the time though!

notamummy10 · 15/07/2016 11:10

I have roast and new potatoes!

LizzieVereker · 15/07/2016 11:11

Mash? What?? Shock. Mindblown. I've never seen mash on a roast dinner, and I thought I was well travelled, roast dinner-wise.

I'm not admitting how many roast potatoes I do per person because it looks greedy. 8 per person But this includes left- overs for those who want something later...

Notso · 15/07/2016 11:19

I usually do three or four roast potatoes per person and couple extra. There's always some left over, I love them cold.

Mash and roast, yes always both as a standard. Am Irish though, we can't get enough spuds. We have mushy peas with a roast dinner as well which British DP can never get his head around.

bombayflambe · 15/07/2016 12:20

I do roast and mash. I can only fit enough roasties in the oven for a couple of pieces each, so they are almost there as an extra, like the stuffing, leek pudding/yorkies etc.
I do tend to cook for a multitude though. If it were just the 7 of us I could do just roast potatoes, but it's a habit.
The double carbs thing doesn't count with a roast dinner because you have smaller portions of lots of things. Also you couldn't have Yorkshire puddings or stuffing if you applied that rule!
I usually do about 6 different veg too, but no-one has to have everything.

bombayflambe · 15/07/2016 12:22

A colleague gave me a recipe for roast potato soup. The idea of leftover roast potatoes was such a novelty I had to make some specially just for the soup.

Itsaplayonwords · 15/07/2016 12:23

I don't like roast potatoes - I know, apparently that's not acceptable. I'd much rather have mash.
