I've always had both as well as meat and veggies, dh thinks you don't.

If I was cooking one myself I'd probably be too lazy to do the mash but certainly think it's normal to have both. When you eat out at a carvery they give you both!

TheWeeBabySeamus1 · 14/07/2016 19:05

Excessive use of the word "both" by me there. Blush

HicDraconis · 14/07/2016 19:05

Roast joint of whatever.

Then roast potatoes, boiled new potatoes in butter, mashed carrot & swede together, steamed greens, roast parsnips & carrots, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing in roast if poultry or loaf tin if not, gravy.

Followed by apple pie crumble, ice cream and cream.

Sunday lunch 😊 Love it.

NeedACleverNN · 14/07/2016 19:08

We do here but I don't eat mash so I don't eat it, but it's common in Lincolnshire to have mashed potatoes and roast potatoes

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 14/07/2016 19:08

Just roast potatoes here, never any other sort of potato. Plain steamed veg (no honey glazes or similar and absolutely never cheese sauce). Lots of gravy.

DrHarleenFrancesQuinzel · 14/07/2016 19:09

Id have both here too, but then again Im not a fan of roast dinners anyway, but when we do have them I do have both. So what if its double carbs.

clippityclop · 14/07/2016 19:10

You can stick your gavels where the sun don't shine, I 'd feel decidedly short changed if there was just one sort of spud! Always roasties, mash and then either minty new potatoes or a dauphenoise (sp?) All four at Christmas dinner, and sometimes croquet potatoes too. It's about choice and plentiful hospitality. Want roast dinner now.

Huldra · 14/07/2016 19:10

It's incorrect and the wrong thing to do but wrong can be delicious. If you find it delicious then go for it.

Babysafari · 14/07/2016 19:11

Yes carvery serves both.

Dh has just decided that his mum did always do bothHmm

We'd had that conversation loads of times now I'm thinking he could just never be bothered to do both when he cooked.

I don't mind double carbs they're both so nice.

I'd eat Yorkshires with any meat too.

littledrummergirl · 14/07/2016 19:11

I grew up with both, dh refuses to have mash so I don't cook it, I think he's weird and both should be available. Grin

Mummyme1987 · 14/07/2016 19:11

Both here too. It's making me want a roast now!

FurryDogMother · 14/07/2016 19:13

Nope, no mash (and I've lived in both the north and south of England). Never see it offered when I eat out on Sundays in pubs, either, but here in Ireland mash seems to come with everything, even Shepherd's Pie and chips!

Whatthefreakinwhatnow · 14/07/2016 19:15

Roast potatoes, mash and roast parsnips here as standard! Can't hsve a roast without these basics 😂

Babysafari · 14/07/2016 19:16

I want a roast too made one yesterday though.

Katedotness1963 · 14/07/2016 19:17

Mash and roasties. You need the mash for the gravy.

QueenUrsula · 14/07/2016 19:17

Both, always.

CatNip2 · 14/07/2016 19:19

Never, roast spuds only.

Wolpertinger · 14/07/2016 19:20

Just roast potatoes. Why would you possibly need both? plus mash is revolting

Mia1415 · 14/07/2016 19:21

Only roast here!

TulipsInAJug · 14/07/2016 19:24

Also Northern Irish.

Mum always does roast and boiled potatoes.

I made a roast dinner last week and had roast and mash...Definitely much nicer.

SquedgieBeckenheim · 14/07/2016 19:26

DH and I are both Southerners now living in Yorkshire.
My roast consists of 1 meat, mixed roast veg (carrots, parsnip, sweet potato, pepper, red onion and butternut squash), roast potatoes, stuffing or yorkshire pud and gravy.
MIL's roast consists of - 1 meat, every vegetable (literally) she can find in the supermarket either roasted, mashed or boiled, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, bread sauce, gravy, stuffing, and yorkshire pud. I can never finish it!
My Mum's roast - 1 meat, a few select seasonal veg, roast potatoes, stuffing or yorkshire pud, gravy.

My point being - there is a traditional idea of what a roast "should" be but everyone does it a little different. I wouldn't do mash and roast potatoes, but I do do 2 different types of potato!

IneedAdinosaurNickname · 14/07/2016 19:26

Only roast here. If I had mash as well I couldn't eat as many roasties and what would be sad Grin

TheJollyPostmansWife · 14/07/2016 19:26

Only one. Never made croquettes though - always thought they were more of a European thing? I could be persuaded to double spud for croquettes but are they with cheese and ham or a different way?

Tfoot75 · 14/07/2016 19:28

Roast potatoes only, mash too at Christmas. MIL does mash or boiled served with only 2 (frozen) roast potatoes - practically criminal. I'll add some mash but don't want to sacrifice any roasties!

Lucked · 14/07/2016 19:30

MIL from the North East does both. My mum never really did roast dinners growing up🙁, she has never ever cooked Yorkshire pudding. She occasionally did s but if roast beef but usually just saved with boiled potatoes and green beans.

Thankfully I have married an expert in Riast dinners!
