Aibu to make up symptoms to obtain medication

Hopefully this isn't as bad as it sounds!

I am taking antibiotics for an infection, it's is an antibiotic I've had a fair few times before, usually at a lower dose. My issue is that every single time I've taken it in the past I've ended up with thrush that's needed medication to clear it up. I'm only a couple of days into the antibiotics and about to go away at the end of the week. Would I be unreasonable to tell the pharmacist I have symptoms of thrush now so that I can purchase some Canesten over the counter?

Christ no! Do it. If you don't get thrush, you don't have to use it.

You'd have done better to ask for a thrush script at the same time. That's what I do if I remember. The one follows the other as the night the day for me.

Your title is pretty misleading. YABU to the title, but YANBU given your OP.

Lord no - and surely the pharmacist would sell you Thrush cream/pill in advance if you told them what you've written in your OP. Far better to have it in hand and not need it than suffer thrush for any longer than you need to!

Just go to a large supermarket and buy it off the shelf. Then you don't have to lie to anyone.

Just go into the chemist and ask for it, you don't have to tell the pharmacist your symptoms!

Next time ask for a prescription along with the antibiotics.

Just buy the cream off the shelf from Boots or the supermarket. You don't need to make up a story for anybody.

I don't think I've ever been asked anything when buying thrush medication over the counter. And I've also obtained them through the minor ailments scheme and don't remember being grilled then either

Simply yes I would. Though iv found probiotics are amazing for fighting off anti bio side effects

It's probably the only circumstance I can think of where this is ok.

Having said that if it's cheaper to get generic clotrimazole than it is for the NHS to prescribe I'll just buy it. A few of the GPs in my practice will tell me if this is the case.

Really thought this was about trying to get Valium or sleeping pills! I have worked in a pharmacy, believe me no one cares about if your foof is currently a bit itchy or will be in a couple of days. It's whether or not you've had a reaction previously/ifit could react with other medication is the important bit. Most pharmacist hear 'antibiotics' and know exactly why you need the cream.

You can get it from the shelf in Sainsbury's. No need to talk to anyone

If you need an over the counter medication, the conversation usually goes:

Have you used it before?
Are you on any other medication?
Are you pregnant/breastfeeding?

And sometimes (not relevant here):
Have you blood pressure/heart issues or had a stroke?

Do you know this contains paracetamol/aspirin and not to take more than every 4 hours?

Are you driving, as this may cause tiredness?

No one needs a life history, just precaution!

clotrimazole is about £2.50 and I understand it is the same thing. Over the counter.

Side note- can you take anti biotics and pro biotics at the same time? If so I never knew that!
