to think ASMR is a load of rubbish.

It doesn't do anything for me. Confused
All that silly whispering, from left to right. I don't get it. Confused
Am I being an old grump?

Or is it simply a case of finding the right one?

I don't get tingles (and am really sad about it) but I still love asmr videos and find them really relaxing. I love watching gentlewhispering before bed, Maria's voice always sends me straight to sleep.

MitzyLeFrouf · 01/07/2016 00:13

'I get ASMR but also have misophonia, so am really picky about which videos I listen'

Me too!

I love ASMR but I hate most of the ASMR videos on youtube with all that annoying whispering (argh!) and slow and exaggerated movements. I get that trippy ASMR feeling if I watch someone in real life do things like wrap a gift, write on a blackboard, flick through paperwork, put on makeup....... I've always had this sensation where I go into a trance when watching someone carry out these kinds of tasks. It's like getting a brain massage.

It was strange when I first read about it being described as an actual thing.

MitzyLeFrouf · 01/07/2016 00:15

'I get it with someone playing with my hair.'

Oh yes! That makes me drift off in the most delightfully trippy way.

LizKeen · 01/07/2016 00:19

At the start of that crinkly one, what is he doing with his hands? It felt like a scalp massage. Was that the point? What is that type called? The crinkling was ok but the bit at the start was great.

RadiatorBlues · 01/07/2016 00:26

No tingles, but I like them! :)

Atlas15 · 01/07/2016 00:48

I feel like a whole world has opened up for me now especially the close personal attention role play videos.
I didn't think I could suspend my disbelief for it to work, but I can.
A pp said something about an optical exam and I would say that that is probably the reason why I enjoy them.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 01/07/2016 00:52

I love some of these vids. I'm not sure if it triggers sense memories, as I used to get that tingle lots as a child, but anyway, I do like some of them and they help zone me out and get sleepy.

Roomba · 01/07/2016 08:33

I don't like most of the whispering ones and ones where you can hear all the sticky spit in their mouth. Also in most of these videos they speak soo slowly and that drives me nuts.

Love the tapping, crinkling, drawing on chalkboard and typing videos though. There's a guy called Duff the Psych who does amazing ear rubbing/head massage and tapping style videos that just make me weak and floppy!

MorrisZapp · 01/07/2016 08:49

I think Maria (gentlewhispering) has the huge fanbase she has because her story is fascinating and her followers feel invested in her life. Many of her 'veedeos' are about her, and she is a genuinely interesting person. She's also a born teacher who loves learning and sharing. To many of us, she feels like a friend.

FenellaFerranti · 01/07/2016 09:21

ASMR totally works for me. I still remember now going for a dress fitting about 15 years ago and the woman measured down my back. I had tingles for hours!

Do you think it works for babies? White noise hasn't worked for non-sleeping DS2, maybe whispering lady will stop him waking all night??!

Whitedoor · 01/07/2016 09:23

Atlas 15 if you like the personal attention ones try a guy called Paul Artwork who is French Canadian, does some really nice portrait role plays and exam type things.

Roomba I love Duff the Pysch too. Have you seen Raffy Taphy he does tapping but also brilliant hand noises.

BillSykesDog · 01/07/2016 09:26

I tried this last night for the first time off the back off reading this thread. One of Lauren Otrowski Fenton's sleep ones. Listened for about 20 minutes, no tingles, thought it hadn't worked. But as soon as I switched it off I went straight to sleep, which is unheard of for me.

MaddyHatter · 01/07/2016 09:33

i definitely get it from music, but i was a classical singer, so i think there are certain instruments and tones that absolutely speak to my soul

its a christmas song, but this does it for me totally. i get the head tingles and goosepimples listening to it every time.

Fratelli · 01/07/2016 09:36

I love ASMR but only specific ones. They really help me relax and fall asleep.

If it doesn't work for you that's fine, not everything works for everyone. Not sure why calling it bullshit is helpful for anyone though.

acasualobserver · 01/07/2016 09:45

I recognise the sensation and have experienced it all my life but none of those videos reproduced it for me. However, I probably only listened to each one for a few minutes - perhaps I need to persevere?

MaddyHatter · 01/07/2016 09:48

i've tried loads of ASMR videos, they all give me the rage, either the saliva/mouth smacking noises make me want to kill them, or i just feel horribly.. embarrassed watching them, they make me rage and squirm.

I'll stick to my cello and piano music.

I get it from some kinds of religious chanting too, there's some recording from Benedictine Monks thats fabulous.

MaddyHatter · 01/07/2016 09:55

not benedictine, Gregorian (sorry, having issues with getting right words atm)

This is a Gregorian Chant of the Kyrie and its fabulous.

PetraStrorm · 01/07/2016 09:56

I'm another one who has had ASMR my whole life but never had a name for it till very recently. I remember trying to explain it to people when I was younger and they just didn't know what I was going on about. I mainly get it from voices, also some visual/noise combinations - like thin card being slowly cut with scissors, for example.

I remember watching Delia Smith on tv when I was about 7, and there was a closeup shot of onions gently frying in a pan. That gave me tingles.

It's very odd, and if you don't get it it would no doubt seem very weird. Must admit, some of the asmr videos seem to tip over a bit into a kind of fetishism which I don't object to, but it's not my bag.

Though I defy anyone to watch Bob Ross and NOT get ASMR Grin

IceRoadDucker · 01/07/2016 10:14

It's not bullshit. It's something only certain people experience, for whatever reason--probably genetics, since most of us start experiencing it from a young age.

It was a surprise for me to find out it had a name and that not everybody experiences it. Though it was then I finally realised why not everybody loves going to the optician's...

MrsGideon · 01/07/2016 10:41

I can honestly say that listening to Gentlewhispering actually changed my life. I discovered it during a period of extreme anxiety and sometimes it is the only thing that can relax me, stop my heart racing, and get me off to sleep. I even listen to it at work at stressful times

I think people like Maria are doing wonderful work, and just because some of you don't experience ASMR or don't personally find it relaxing, doesn't mean it's bullshit!

Oh and, as an aside, some people mentioned they don't like the 'sticky spit' sound when people whisper - Maria did a 'making of' video where she mentions she always eats apple just before doing a video, as it makes her whispering voice sound more crisp

Crinkle77 · 01/07/2016 10:43

OMG I never knew this was a thing. I have always loved it when someone is writing with a pen/pencil on a hard surface. Just been on You Tube and found it. So nice but not as good as in real life.

JimmyGreavesMoustache · 01/07/2016 10:49

I do experience it, but find the videos specifically aimed at ASMR response do nothing for me.

Things that work for me are Poetry Please on R4, the QVC beauty shows, and my old East European Politics Professor. I swear the reason I never properly got to grips with the fall of the Soviet Bloc is because the lectures put me into a trance.

IceRoadDucker · 01/07/2016 10:52

I really like this playlist of "accidental" ASMR videos: www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFr4RzFzYTFn1Don_Xe51202WfSy3NADF

I love a lot of the intentional ones too, but this playlist is great.

Crinkle77 · 01/07/2016 10:53

I also used to love the woman's voice who did the regression on This Morning, Andrea Faulkes. Her voice sent me to sleep once. It was just lovely.

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 01/07/2016 10:56

I love it. I came across it by accident and I regularly use it to fall asleep now.
