Many a time I have been reading a thread and thought "I've never head anyone say that in real life".

OP posts:
pictish · 28/06/2016 09:39

Ha ha - no is a complete sentence. I laugh every time I read that one because it so isn't. I get a funny vision of the blunt 'no' and chuckle to myself. It's terrible advice.

MrsJayy · 28/06/2016 09:40

My dh came home from a training course talking about not his monkeys for days i wanted to punch him

AdoraKiora · 28/06/2016 09:40

Where did 'sanpro' come from? Never heard it outside of MN. Its awful, too

BarbaraofSeville · 28/06/2016 09:46

I’m surprised that people think hobbies are a Mumsnet thing and RL people don’t have hobbies. Don’t you know people who read, or sew, or bake, run, garden, go to the gym, play sport, take photographs, go birdwatching, hiking, sing, collect things, make things etc etc etc?

MrsJayy · 28/06/2016 09:52

Its the word hobby we are talking about as in My dh has an expensive hobby he does all weekend what that translates to is the husband spends ££s on his bloody cycling club

BarbaraofSeville · 28/06/2016 09:55

I said that upthread MrsJayy but then several people have come back and said that they don't know anyone with hobbies.

pictish · 28/06/2016 10:00

Plenty of people have interests that they indulge as and when. I don't think I know anyone who spends every weekend pursuing a hobby alone away from the family though. I'm not judging in saying that, I just don't see it, that's all.

Champagneformyrealfriends · 28/06/2016 10:00

"Has form for". I know it's a legitimate phrase but I've never heard anybody say it IRL.
Never heard of "wendied" or "Helened" though Hmm

MrsJayy · 28/06/2016 10:00

Ah ok sorry misunderstood

MeAndMy3LovelyBoys · 28/06/2016 10:01

Makes my teeth itch.

I mean wtaf does that mean?

WorraLiberty · 28/06/2016 10:04

It's not that people in my RL don't have hobbies.

It's just that I've never met anyone who would say, "My DH is doing his hobby tonight", instead of "My DH is playing golf tonight" (or whatever the hobby is).

In fact if someone said their DH was doing their hobby tonight without saying what it was, I'd assume he'd taken up hardcore wanking or something Grin

spanky2 · 28/06/2016 10:41

Egosumgism you're lucky... I have anxiety disorder. It's shit.
I also have abusive parents who I've had to go no contact with. I know three other people who have too.
I like mn as there are people who've had a similar experience to me. We can get support from each other. In rl people aren't willing to talk about it as its not in their realm of experience.

MrsJayy · 28/06/2016 10:46

I had an anxiety disorder all through my 20s into my 30s its not something I would have spoken about in RL to randoms

MrsJayy · 28/06/2016 10:47

But randoms on the internet i spill my guts Grin

JessieMcJessie · 28/06/2016 11:35

"has form for" is a term adopted from horse racing. It's commonly used in conversation amongst my social circle.

Regarding the use of the word "hobby", what about the chain of craft/sewing/knitting/art shops called Hobbycraft? Those exist very much in real life! It's a perfectly normal general word used to encompass all those sorts of things, plus collecting etc.

vladthedisorganised · 28/06/2016 14:11

Definitely haven't heard 'Wendied' outside of MN (and Helened is a new one on me -are they different?)
I hadn't heard 'gaslighting' before MN, but I know it isn't exclusive to MN and says more about my ignorance than anything else.
Itchy teeth I've always used in the context of strong cheese rather than something that sets my teeth on edge!

GingerMerkin · 28/06/2016 14:24

I hadn't heard grabby before but used it for the first time in RL today.

HermioneJeanGranger · 28/06/2016 14:25

What's being Helened? Is it the same as Wendied? Confused

And yes "MIL has form" or whatever is something I've never heard anyone say IRL.

Archedbrowse · 28/06/2016 15:28

"When someone shows you who they are, believe them"

Vagabond · 28/06/2016 15:36

I rarely hear the word C**T in real life.

I'm rather happy to have that word missing from my daily life. I just think it's ugly and aggressive and I don't think I'd want to mix with someone who said it in regular conversation.

NeedACleverNN · 28/06/2016 15:39

Ah see round here Cunt is a sign of affection

"How are you you old cunt"

But it is and can be very offensive

mrssmith79 · 28/06/2016 15:55

I've never seen anyone spit tea over a keyboard. Yet it's a frequent occurrence with mumsnetters.
I'm also averse to the wow, just wow lot.
And refusers, in the context ds is a pea refuser, aibu to feed him beans every night with his tea

SeamstressfromTreacleMineRoad · 28/06/2016 16:55

OhahIlostmybra I use 'Natch!' all the time. I blame Arthur Marshall who used to use it a lot - it tickled me, and stuck in my vocabulary... Grin

supersoftcuddlytoys · 28/06/2016 17:17

Trigger warning! How infantile is that?

CheeseFan · 28/06/2016 17:27

"Does he have form?"

That's new to me!
