turned away from beauticians because I had my baby with me

I have just been turned away from a beauty salon because 'we don't allow children '. Not only do I not have childcare but my baby is so exclusively breast fed. I feel so upset, humiliated and angry. Is this a commonly accepted practice?!

Defo look into mobile beauticians.

Sorry I think YABU because I booked a beautician appointment in a salon well in advance as a treat to look forward to as a bit of time away from DC1 who cried constantly in the first few months.

I can't tell you how gutted I'd have been to have spent that money only to have been subjected to someone else's baby crying in the next room at the salon!

trafalgargal · 28/06/2016 09:05

If as is stated standard salon insurance says you can't have under 12s in the salon I wonder if ones that aren't bothered by it have a different type of policy or are ignoring the restriction so aren't insured.

NoMudNoLotus · 28/06/2016 09:07

Has happened to me.

It makes sense really.

Where I work we have a no children policy for health and safety reasons - this includes staff and visitors etc.

@ LittleMoonbuggy

I was going to make that point too but didn't because in my experience people get a bit shitty if you dare mention you'd rather not have kids somewhere you're trying to relax in.

Jesus Christ. You will be wanting to take your baby to a casino next.

RadiatorBlues · 28/06/2016 10:58

I used to go go to an Asian beauty parlour and now an Iranian one. Always have taken kids and all fine. Relaxed places.

I wondered this too. Maybe there are different types of insurerance? Are they using different products/chemicals or are they just unfamiliar with the dangers which begs the question are they endangering themselves also or are they not properly trained etc

shrunkenhead · 28/06/2016 11:21

Looks forward to the next aibu thread...."I'm SO exclusively breastfeeding my baby but constantly finding there are places that I just can't go to.....diving club, rock climbing club, abseiling it's a nightmare! Hate to play the bf discrimination card but it's just not fair!".....Seriously, give it a bottle, do the earth mother thing but STOP pandering to the Daily Mail! Not only has it been done to death but it's boring!

Numberoneisgone · 28/06/2016 11:30

Actually Shrunken what I have seen on MN actually includes a flower show, hairdressers, weddings, restaurant and this one a beautician. I think it makes some British mothers seem pretty anti other people's children. It really strikes me as the Victorian chikdren should be seen and not heard attitude that you would have thought would be pretty much gone by now.

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/06/2016 11:33

The flowers show had a blanket ban for h&safety reasons plus no facilities.

Just because somewhere isn't suitable,e for babies or children or has laws designed to protect them doesn't make Britain unfriendly towards children.

Babies cannot be taken everywhere surely people know this. Where I work you'd not get through the door by law. Sorry. Find one of the million other places you can take babies and quit whining about places that have perfectly understandable restrictions on admission to children or timings they are welcome

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/06/2016 11:35

I bet the people moaning would be the first to complain or sue should their child have been hurt at the very place they went to the papers to complain about getting into

Numberoneisgone · 28/06/2016 11:41

Giles many other countries do not have the same restrictions in similar situations so yes it does make Britain seem more unfriendly towards chikdren and actually that in my first hand experience of Britain. I find it relatively unfriendly towards children.

IcedCoffeeToGo · 28/06/2016 11:45

What was the OP having done?

I've sat in the nail salon whilst Mum's have come in with babies for waxing, the babies and toddlers get very very upset.

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/06/2016 11:47

other countries have stray dogs running round the hotel.

Some countries ban medication we can get down our local petrol garage.

Means nothing.

Whatever rules other people or places choose to break has no bearing on what we legally have to do in order to keep trading as the company/ shop or whatever needs to do so.

We can't have kids put in danger or in. Igbo clubs or exposed to toxic fumes just because people can't handle putting their kid down for five mins

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/06/2016 11:47

Night club

Numberoneisgone · 28/06/2016 11:52

Well Giles I have traveled widely around Europe, South America, Asia and I can honestly say Britain and to a slightly lesser extent Ireland, where I am from, are the least child friendly in this regard. I have read enough Brexit threads to know other people have differing views.

GabsAlot · 28/06/2016 11:53

i hate all this its discrimination

no it isnt some people want to go to a salon for some peace and quiet-sometimes its dangerous and the salon arent covered for it

stop bringing the breatfeeding card out it has nothing to do with it

Numberoneisgone · 28/06/2016 11:53

What is all this about toxic fumes no beautician has fumes that are toxic to their staff or clients.

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/06/2016 11:56

When it comes to places that are dangerous or unsuitable then you cannot call somewhere unfriendly. Allowing a child in doesn't mean it's something you should do. The same chemicals are equally dangerous whatever country they are in.

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/06/2016 12:01

Nail polish remover and hairspray and nail varnish can make us feel light headed. If you imagine several people using them in the same place and a babies higher respiratory rate ots surely not difficult to see its. It the best idea surely?

Numberoneisgone · 28/06/2016 12:01

Giles a baby who cannot move cannot access dangerous chemicals. It is just blocking access for new mothers for the sake of it under some guise of progress.

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/06/2016 12:03

It doesn't need to move its in the air Hmm

Raaaaaah · 28/06/2016 12:03

shrunken breastfeeding doesn't mean posturing as an earth mother it is just a mode of feeding so don't be so inflammatory.
Number I agree. Other countries don't seem to have the same non kid attitude we do. I think we all get a bit precious about having 'me time' and see children as something to be tolerated.

Numberoneisgone · 28/06/2016 12:05

No again Giles it is not toxic chemicals would damage staff and clients so no they are not in the air Hmm
