Starting with MN talk guidelines?

Have you just elected yourself chairman of the WC and ejected me from the ranks usual? Grin

This made me laugh OP. You are so right! Some of the posts I've read on here have shocked me. A thread about being afraid to go to a caravan park incase it was filled with "chavs" is a fine example. It amazed me how many people blatantly agreed! Sometimes you have to laugh at people's ignorance and self importance.

I've seen a few posts over the last couple of days suggesting only degree educated people should be allowed vote on 'complex' issues as the rest are incapable of forming an opinion?? Tony Blair, David Cameron, Boris , Nigel with all their degrees have made some fine choices!

Yes! That was awful. Really bad.

Yanbu, let's start with the word chav

The assumption by some that a degree is the marker of the solidly MC is in itself hilarious.

It would be a good start.

Yes and it's very much seen IRL as well as MN

Just5minswithDacre · 25/06/2016 18:48

Actually, thinking about the ageism issue, there was a whole thread last night where the OP insisted that the baby boomers had maliciously bought houses when they were cheap, secured final salary pensions and so on. That was getting a lot of support.

So maybe throwing the baby boomers under the bus is okay again now too Sad

i'm middle class but i don't work and am on benefits. i don't know WHAT to think of myself.

katemiddletonsnudeheels · 25/06/2016 21:56

The ageism has been utterly revolting and just as bad as the barely concealed racism stemming from the far right supporters of Brexit.

I'm going to quote from Morrissey here

It's so easy to laugh, it's so easy to hate

It takes guts to be gentle and kind

But class is such a vague, slippery issue. And it's not necessarily something you're 'stuck with' even if you think it is a thing.

Plenty of people change their outlook, earning potential and circumstances.

Class isn't (to me) about money anyway. I despise the word 'chav'... But, erm, there are plenty of very wealthy people, particularly in the public eye, who would fit that unfortunate stereotype. It's about attitude and self-respect.

I know the Jeremy Kyle stereotype thing is a bit mean - but, seriously, it is irrelevant how much money or education those people have - they have no class. It's about how you conduct yourself, not where you live or how much you earn. My great-grandparents were very, very poor. But they still behaved themselves...

Are you referring to my post usual? I didn't refer to anyone as 'these people', and certainly not to WC people. Have you misunderstood? I was specifically referring to the actual people on Jeremy Kyle - and yes, I have seen a couple of episodes! Those people are specifically chosen because they don't ' behave themselves' and then they show themselves up horribly! Nothing to do with being WC or hard-up, and everything to do with bring a dick. I only mentioned that stereotype because it had already been offered up as being indicative of working class stereotypes; I was saying it had nothing to do with people's financial status. Any clearer?

I think we have to be a bit careful here. The referendum result has come about due to failures in multiculturalism because it became unacceptable to challenge things about other cultures which are the wrong thing to do and perhaps particularly the wrong thing to do if you are living in a country where you have been welcomed (e.g. Rotherham). There are things that rich people do and poor people do because they are rich or poor and we need to be able to call out both sides ( and indeed those in the middle) when necessary.

Lurkedforever1 · 26/06/2016 01:13

In theory, yes. I'm upper middle class in theory, I speak rp, I'm intelligent, degree educated, with a gifted child who also speaks 'posh' if not quite my rp. I also live on a council estate, and short of the money for a much bigger detached house, of which there aren't any in my chav area, I have no intentions of moving. I like it, and my neighbours and community.

I've lost count of how many times people ask wanker questions or make stupid comments such as 'and are you safe there?' 'What a shame for you' 'how did you end up there?'.

Still, I find it is unfailingly the insecure, social climbing, one generation removed from working class, socially inept and unable to think beyond their own rigid circle lower middle classes that act this way. People with actual class, whether that be working, upper, or middle, tend not to give a fuck.

Re EU voting. It's not intelligence or information. It's because generally speaking, the benefits of the EU apply to the better off, while the negatives only effect those at the bottom.

And fwiw one of the most razor sharp and analytical minds I've ever met, not to mention the first person I'd trust my child to, belongs to someone the worthies of mumsnet would judge to fuck. And yet she could give them all some low quality fashion hunters, a waitrose golden customer trophy, some tweed judgy pants and a tin of farrow & ball paint and still beat them hands down for real class.

ThisCakeFilledIsle · 26/06/2016 01:17

That's it summed up though: benefits of EU apply to better off..negatives effect those at the bottom.

beetroot2 · 26/06/2016 01:27

Absolutely, the nastiness is rather astounding from people who claim to be "democratic"

beetroot2 · 26/06/2016 01:29

Absolutely, This Cake, that's why they're so depressed and horrified that, guess what, Great Britain is mainly made up of working class. It must be such a shock to them Grin
