I'm feeling pretty shocked and scared right now.

Why did you vote for brexit?

I voted remain but I think to label anyone who voted leave as racist is ridiculous. Freedom of movement has been great for me, but not so great for large numbers of people.
In my hometown in the uk there are ghettos - areas of high crime, almost zero employment and populated almost exclusively by immigrants. You cannot label people as racist because they object To this. Immigration has benefitted the country as a whole but it's caused pockets of severe problems - overloaded infrastructure, cultural and religious clashes and wage depression.
The vote was democratic- we have to accept the result and move on. I personally wish we'd stayed but I certainly don't label anyone who voted leave as racist

Helmetbymidnight · 24/06/2016 09:24

Less educated then.

DH left school at 16 (but voted remain). He's not whining that the statistics show that more graduates voted exit.

TheWernethWife · 24/06/2016 09:24

Farage has been on the news this morning saying that he made a "mistake" saying £350m was going to the EU and that he cannot guarantee that this money will now go to the NHS.

peachpudding · 24/06/2016 09:26

Farage has nothing to do with the British government. He isnt even an MP.

IrianOfW · 24/06/2016 09:27

"How many of you voted "leave" as a protest vote, but couldn't be bothered to vote in the last General Election?

Well you lot better have some ideas about how you're going to get us out of the mess you've now got us into.
"

Well quite.

Come on then. Let's have some ideas please!

FoggyBottom · 24/06/2016 09:29

Lets talk about immigration affecting poorer areas more and the govt not putting in extra funds into the nhs, schools and housing in these areas

Let's talk about the Tory government removing the migrant impact fund by stealth.

Let's talk about why those feeling disenfranchised used the EU referendum - which is about our relationship to the rest of the world beyond our borders - as a protest against the current government's policies, rather than using a General Election - which deals with matters nationally, within our borders.

milkyface · 24/06/2016 09:29

Farage has been on the news this morning saying that he made a "mistake" saying £350m was going to the EU and that he cannot guarantee that this money will now go to the NHS.

We'll surely anyone with half a brain, whether they voted remain or leave, realised that of course he cannot guarantee it.

He's not in fucking charge is he! Of course he can't bloody well guarantee it because it's not his decision

Surely people knew that?!?!

EmpressTomatoKetchup · 24/06/2016 09:29

Hmm, I predict a labour shortage soon. Who do you think will fill these shortages Brexiters? gets on the phone to her brown faced relatives and tells them to brush up on thier English

ExitPursuedByBear · 24/06/2016 09:29

There's already a petition to have a second referendum.

Whine whine whine. We didn't get the result we wanted so we want another vote.

Brumbabe · 24/06/2016 09:30

Whois You're talking utter bollocks. I am educated, I do read broadsheets and other publications. I used all forms of information to form my decision, MN included but not exclusively. Just because I formed a different opinion to you makes me stupid does it?

It's a good job I can control my emotions otherwise I'd start calling you names :)

almondpudding · 24/06/2016 09:31

Helmet, I don't think people are complaining that more graduates voted remain! It is widely known.

I just find the contempt for ordinary people and the language around that divisive and unpleasant.

Chaz, thanks for that link. I think there will be decisions yet to be made about it.

milkyface · 24/06/2016 09:31

I think there will be another referendum.

The intelligent people want another vote. I'm fairly sure they'll get it.

If it had of happened the other way there wouldn't have been another referendum though.

TheWernethWife · 24/06/2016 09:31

Peach I'm aware that Farage has nothing to do with the government but some people listen to him and vote accordingly.

TheWernethWife · 24/06/2016 09:32

£250 billion to prop up the banks? Where's that coming from? Goodbye public services?

louisagradgrind · 24/06/2016 09:32

Chipstix.

By putting up that poster are you saying that over half the English people are stupid and that, by contrast, all those who live in Gibraltar are intelligent?

I do think that is what has put people's backs up. Over half the population are not stupid: they have a different view.

Personally, I think those who voted remain without knowing the name of their MEP and preferably the name of neighbouring MEPs- or, indeed, unable to produce a working knowledge of how the EU works were not showing huge intelligence.

It is always an intelligent thing to know the names of your representatives and the ability to vote them out.

Any government of the UK can now choose to open its borders; insist every sitting room is painted pink; close down the NHS; drop history from the curriculum but, and this is important, if the majority didn't like it, they could vote them out.

If the EU issued those directives, it would be more difficult to get rid of those who made those choices on our behalf.

On a technical point, I think many of you may mean xenophobia when you use the term 'racism'.

almondpudding · 24/06/2016 09:34

Xenophobia is a form of racism.

BillSykesDog · 24/06/2016 09:34

And there lies the disparity between the working class disenfranchised Leave voters and the disconnected, unaware Remainers.

Exactly Mango. Looking on here this morning I've seen an awful lot of 'the price of my house is going to go down', 'my business will suffer'.

On the news there are an awful lot of wealthy expats sitting in cafes bemoaning the threat to their comfortable lifestyles. One woman was complaining that she might not have enough money to finish building her villa and she wouldn't have enough disposable income in Euros if the pound fell.

There are an awful lot of scientists and engineers on my FB feed that I work with who are bemoaning that the lack of EU grants and money mean they will have less jobs and lower wages in their industry. I've had to bite my tongue as my DH works in construction and when wages and the job market in that industry have been repeatedly decimated on the ascension of new states they couldn't have given two shits beyond crowing about how marvellous it was they could get a cheap plumber.

Almost everybody who is bemoaning the result that I have come across have one thing in common: they're affluent. They're part of a class who has benefited greatly from the EU. And they have offered no solution to the problems of the less well off apart from benefits and more benefits. And most people don't want a life on benefits. They want decent wages and affordable housing and they honestly can't see how that was achievable with the status quo.

Helmetbymidnight · 24/06/2016 09:35

There won't be another referendum.

Is this like the pencils all over again?

gonetoseeamanaboutadog · 24/06/2016 09:36

milky It wasn't Farage who made the NHS claims, it was the official leave campaign.

JoffreyBaratheon · 24/06/2016 09:36

A shameful day. I think anyone who voted Leave is racist - even the (majority?) who think they're not. This reflects so badly on the UK. And will destabilise other countries in Europe, too, with several others now following suit - and may well lead to the rise of nationalism.

My grandfather was one of those British soldiers who liberated Belsen. I feel like the world has forgotten what happens when we allow apparent joke figures like Boris Johnson, to have their way, allow nationalism to rise, and have a disunited Europe.

My grandad spent 10 years of his life, in two wars, killing Germans. 10 years. I was always proud that in my lifetime, Germany and England came together as friends and allies.

With my grandad's generation long gone I think it's time to bear witness again. (I have other in laws who were taken out and bayonetted to death by a pit for being Jewish - they weren't shot as bullets cost money). Farage has no sense of history. (We already know people like Gove are clueless). These people need to be shown what happened the last time people like them won the day.

harshbuttrue1980 · 24/06/2016 09:37

I'm educated and work as a secondary school teacher, and it is ridiculous to say that Brexiters are all uneducated. I voted leave because I want us to be able to make the laws and policies that suit our country, and to be able to get rid of our decision makers if we so decide, through democracy. That includes having control over our borders. I want people to come to the UK if they have the skills to benefit our country, and if they have a job to come to. If we need a bricklayer or dentist, I don't give a stuff whether they come from France, India or Africa - I want the best bricklayer or dentist to come, whatever their skin colour. If someone doesn't have a job arranged, they shouldn't be able to come. You can't just rock up to Australia or America with no money and no job and expect them to take you in, why should you be able to do that in the UK?? That's not racist, its common sense.

SquidgeyMidgey · 24/06/2016 09:38

Whine whine whine. We didn't get the result we wanted so we want another vote.sounds like the SNP.

Just had FIL telling me he voted Leave for my children. He wants to be able to hand them back their heritage. He feels betrayed at how the UK was taken into Europe on a pack of lies and wants UK plc back.

There was a very good article in the Guardian earlier this week (I'm usually a nasty Tory Telegraph reader for demographic purposes) about how a Leave result is actually an inadvertent vote for English independence. We shall see.

GabsAlot · 24/06/2016 09:38

why shold we have another referendum its like saying we wont abide by the result until we win

nobody is racist because they voted out thats pathetic

gonetoseeamanaboutadog · 24/06/2016 09:38

There are an awful lot of scientists and engineers on my FB feed that I work with who are bemoaning that the lack of EU grants and money mean they will have less jobs and lower wages in their industry.

What, like the 'industry' of cancer research? Hmm

they're affluent

Or simply employed by a business that will probably now leave. One 'bemoaner' on mumsnet this morning is sad because they have been told to choose who gets to keep their job. Which is the opposite scenario from the one you're comforting yourself with.
