Vaping at playgroup

I go to a very busy and popular playgroup once a week. There's lots of different rooms and activities, but the largest room is the most popular. It's like a mini bedlam for kids.

Last week I was there with my 2dc and a mum was sat there vaping. I don't care what crappy science you've got to try and prove they are safe - what sort of person vapes at a playgroup???!!!

AIBU to complain to management about this? AIBU to be hoiking my judgy pants well and truly up under my armpits?

Isn't it just an air mist that comes out? What are you worried about (genuine question)

I think, if you wouldn't normally smoke there, you shouldn't vape there.

Oh dear. Well, a big review in (I think) Nature, one of the biggest science journals in the world came out a few months ago with the view that they are about 95% less harmful than cigarettes.

HOWEVER, nobody should vape inside as it's rude, and doubly nobody should vape inside at a playgroup!! Wtf??

I don't know what comes out to be honest. I just don't think it's appropriate and I don't know if it's healthy. What sort of an example does this set to children? Pah, I dunno,feel silly now.

No, I wouldn't be impressed either. There isn't enough information about the risks yet for me to be happy with my dd being exposed to it. Plus I think it shod be used as a way to stop smoking not a socially acceptable habit.

I wouldn't be happy if someone was doing that at my child's nursery AND I would tell them!

Plus I think it shod be used as a way to stop smoking not a socially acceptable habit. The problem is that vaping is a little and often habit rather than a once an hour 5 minute jag. To be successful it should be used freely, as and when.

So if you prevent those trying to quit from vaping as and when you may as well just give them a packet of fags and tell them to fuck off... your sensibilities and outrage are worth more that their health and desire to quit.

Your desire not to accept vaping regardless of how safe it is means that you are choosing to keep your 2nd and 3rd hand smoking exposure and, should you win and vaping is banned, you will be condemning many others and their families to years more of smoking and it well known dangers.

No, I don't smoke or vape... but I have worked in a Stop! clinic for about 20 years. Vapers get healthier very quickly. Children of vapers do to. Facts... measurable, reliable facts!

I wouldn't like it at all. I remember reading something about trace amounts of nicotine being in the 'vapour', which is obviously nowhere near as harmful as the other chemicals in cigarettes, but I certainly wouldn't want to be exposed to it, and I wouldn't want my children to be anyway.

I worked for a marketing company a few years ago that took an e-cigarette company on as a client. In an (internal, client not present) meeting to discuss strategy, the smokers in my team started using the e-cigs. I asked them to take them outside, and they thought I was being ridiculous. I don't care.

I'm a smoker and a pretty libertarian type who rails at the anti 'smoking in pub garden' brigade but I was inside a pub with some friends last weekend and one of our friends started vaping indoors. It just looked so, so wrong - I hadn't realised how conditioned I was to not see the action of smoking taking place inside!

Ultimately I think that whilst smoking is legal, it should be allowed in any non-confined space. I also don't believe that vaping is harmful, personally. By my logic, I should be fine with vaping indoors, and yet... I don't know. It looks wrong. So I can completely see your point OP.

I vape but would never do so at a playgroup or anywhere like that. I think some people are way OTT about not wanting people to vape indoors but this is still a no from me because I wouldn't want to set a bad example in front of the children.

I asked a friend to not vape in our house now we have a newborn. She wasn't impressed but I give no fucks. Safety of my baby comes first. I think in years to come they will decide that vaping is bad for you too. It's very unnatural

I vape and I vape in a lot of places I'm not meant to (trains, pubs, my office - albiet discretely in all of these - which is possible - if you hold the steam in you don't exhale it. And it is just steam, not smoke)

But I'd never vape at a playgroup. I don't think it would harm the children in anyway but it's not behaviour you want children to copy

I would say YANBU at a playgroup. They were surrounded by children who are impressionable. Who else remembers the copying advert where the children pretend to put pencils etc in their mouths to copy their parents in the background? The reasoning still stands.

I know Billy probably being held back by the horrid knowledge that I must quit soon. I'm out of my mid 20s now so can't claim the excesses of youth excuse!!

Almost as bad as the Wanker parent who felt it appropriate to light up the smelliest splif in the children's play area at the park today. He was finally shamed into stumping it out in the children's sandbox by all the glares and loud comments from half a dozen Mums of who on earth is smoking weeeeeed in a playground full of kids.

Self entitlement or stupidly...not sure which.

Vaping is nowhere near as bad as lighting a spliff! I vape, I vape indoors, I vape in pubs where it is allowed. But I wouldn't vape at a playgroup, or in school playground etc. Not because I think it is harmful, but because it's just socially unacceptable.

No way my husband smoked these and I wouldn't allow it in the house , it smell and you can taste the flavour so that means your breathing it in and it's not just water it's glycol whIch is a known irritant

Vaping should follow the same rules as smoking
