AIBU?

Vaping at playgroup

I go to a very busy and popular playgroup once a week. There's lots of different rooms and activities, but the largest room is the most popular. It's like a mini bedlam for kids.

Last week I was there with my 2dc and a mum was sat there vaping. I don't care what crappy science you've got to try and prove they are safe - what sort of person vapes at a playgroup???!!!

AIBU to complain to management about this? AIBU to be hoiking my judgy pants well and truly up under my armpits?

"Oooooooh, the buzzing of the bees
And the Cigarette trees,
The soda waaaaater fountain,
Where the lemonade springs
And the bluebird sings,
It's the big rock caaandy mountain"

Socially acceptable. Hmm

I vape and with the exception of In my kitchen with the window open wide I don't vape anywhere I couldn't smoke or in places I find unacceptable.

For example outside school or on the school run even in children's parks as much as its safer than I smoking I like to think I was a considerate smoker.

I can't stand people vaping in the school playground either.

My DC have only just found out I vape after 8 months but I explained properly what it was.

Maybe it's just me as I was always embarrassed smoker and did it in secret from pretty much everyone

Im not say vapours need to go in the smokers corner but you see vapours enjoying a vape with a coffee or in playgroup etc its a lot of misty stuff to be blowing about imo

OurBlanche · 22/06/2016 12:07

Yaeh... all that misty stuff. I hate it when baristas use that steam thingy - bloody milk drinkers!

MrsJayy · 22/06/2016 12:13

Do you often put your face near coffee machines ourblanche that can be quite dangerous. vape whereever you like but it is encrouging on other people just the same as smoking does.

I agree OP, if you wouldn't smoke there then I don't think you should vape there either. Hardly appropriate in a childcare setting.

Report
WaitrosePigeon · 22/06/2016 12:15

Ps I'm a smoker

Report
OurBlanche · 22/06/2016 12:18

The baristas do, MrJay. The misty stuff is the same heat etc, just lots more of it from a coffee machine.

And you are probably right. Whenever people see those milky creations they look at their flat white or black coffees and think "I shall have to take up drinking frothy milky drinks^

PS: As I said upthread, not a smoker or a vaper, but I have worked in a Stop! clinic for about 20 years.

It doesn't bother me that much. The kids scout leader was vaping last night when she took the kids out. It looked a bit odd, but I doubt it will do any harm, unlike cigarettes.

Vape smoke is disgusting to breathe in. Why would you make children do that?

The same rule that applies to cigarettes, applies to e-cigs too. So no, the mothers shouldn't be vaping inside a public place as they wouldn't be able to smoke cigarettes in there!

The same rule that applies to cigarettes, applies to e-cigs too No it doesn't. Maybe in your house, and that is absolutely fine.

But not out in the real world... individual busineses can choose to ban vaping but it is not against the law.

Vape smoke is not smoke... it is water vapour.

If you think it smells disgisting then I advise yo to stay away from all sweets and lots of fruit too, fruity yoghurts especially.

Oh and room deodorisers, some perfumes and a whole heap of creams, soaps, shower gels etc. They are all flavoured scented with precisely the same indgredients.

Ex long term smoker here, stopped about 2yrs ago (many thanks to the NHS Clinic who supplied me with gum, patches and support) when I developed lung probs?

BUT! Even when I was on my 20 Marlies a day, I still could see that inhaling anything deep into my lungs in front of children was a no-no cos it's nothing I would have wanted them to emulate. At all.

Like someone upthread, I remember the sweet cigarettes and 'inhaling' them before I ate them up.

I'm pleased that vaping has taken off as an alternative to the Real Deal for smokers, tho. Just...not in front of the children, eh?

OurBlanche, you can't vape on buses, in the shopping centre, in the shops, in coffee shops/restaurants (the only time you can vape at a cafe is the vaping cafe),at the university, at the train station, at the bus station, at different offices etc.

I don't mind the smell actually so don't jump to fucking assumptions yeah? I've actually posted on here that members of my household have turned to vaping and have done since last year!!

I was merely pointing out places are treating e-cigarettes as cigarettes and are enforcing it, you don't need to jump down my throat!

ourblanche pubs, schools, shops, cafes...all ban vaping.

YOU might think it smells nice, others don't. If someone stood beside me squirting air freshener continually into the air, I would ask them to stop too.

KoalaDownUnder · 22/06/2016 12:52

I agree with you, OP. Disgusting and inappropriate.

And I say that as an ex-smoker.

Report
OurBlanche · 22/06/2016 13:06

Ourmummy and others - I know how many places ban vaping. But that is their individual choice. I said that really clearly I also added that it is not against the law.

YOU might think it smells nice, others don't Too much of an assumption there, I haven't said I do. Then again I am not the one moaning about it whilst surrounded by other products stuffed with the same chemicals. I am not the one playing hyocritical games.

Anyone who dislikes vaping should be honest enough to say that it is because it LOOKS like smoking. All else is (excuse the pun) a smoke screen for reading half arsed 'research' and hyping the fear factor. It is less dangerous than cigarettes, less noxious than any urban street with fumes from traffic. It is identical to a whole host of products we all use daily, without a second thought... inclduing those fruity yoghurts!

And... kids taking up vaping... studies show they don't use nicotine juices a) it is illegal to sell them in the same way as it is to sell cigarettes to minors b) they don'y want the nicotine, just the sweet flavour c) very recent research shows that kids who try vaping stop quite quickly, unlike kids who try smoking!

All research available via Google, BBC iPayer etc.

I'm asthmatic. These flavoured/scented vape things really set it off. It's horrible.

Each to their own and all that but it shouldn't be done indoors in a public space IMO. I mean, spraying air freshener isn't illegal but I wouldn't take kindly to people in cafés or trains or wherever spraying them around me at will either Wink

I'm a teacher and saw someone vaping in the staff room recently. It looked so very wrong, my jaw actually dropped. And I used to have regular fag breaks in the boiler room back in the day.

"I think in years to come they will decide that vaping is bad for you too. It's very unnatural."

To quote Lord Vetinari (via the late Sir Terry Pratchett): "You mean, you eat your meat raw and sleep in a tree?" Grin Grin
