To be worried that the Brexiteers might be wrong and an economic disaster is waiting if we leave?

What if we wake up on Friday out of the EU, probably nothing immediately other than some soul searching by the remainders. But what about in the months to come? What if all the economists and world leaders were right? We could be heading down the swanny big time, companies moving to the EU proper, jobs going left right and centre, deficit increasing because of lost revenues (taxes, vat etc).

I've listened to the fervent Brexiteers who have dismissed everything put to them as propaganda and yet they still haven't come up with a plan to counter the 'what if' scenarios. Am I the only one to be worried that nobody has a plan B if the economy does slow down to tune of 1.4%to 6% as predicted bearing in mind that a reduction of just 0.4% would counteract any saving to be made on what we contribute to the EU?

Because Switzerland and Norway are just struggling so much.

Trying to compare Britain to Norway - or Switzerland - is like comparing cheese with a beard.

And the reason Norway is not struggling economically (although has many other issues) is because they didn't sell off their oil then squander the money to fund tax cuts for the rich, nothing to do with the EU - cheers Thatcher.

And 1 in 4 Swiss residents is an immigrant...

I dont recognise this Utopia we supposedly have by being in the EU .

Nobody is saying that we live in a utopia right now. We have a Tory government, elected by the British people, that has made vast cuts to our public services for ideological reasons. The poor, the disabled and the vulnerable are suffering the most.

What some of us are saying, though, is that things could get even worse if we leave the EU and the economy crashes.

Things are bad at the moment, I agree. But I think they're bad because we have a Tory government that is committed to drastic reductions in public spending, and not because we are part of the EU.

A key part of our economy (like it our not) is the global financial sector in London. How that responds to a Brexit could have a massive impact on the country. We might not like that, but that is the reality.

Oliversmumsarmy - the thing is it would be worse without the EU. I don't think anyone is saying it's a utopia. I have a severely disabled son & austerity (particularly cuts to LA budgets as he has expensive care needs) has definitely had an impact on him (and even more of an impact on many of his contemporaries. However, austerity is a political choice - vote in a different lot than the current ones (even a coalition) & things should improve. If we leave the EU then the economic disaster that follows would mean whoever was in it would be bad as there would not be the choice to change things.

Public services need huge investment - that could be made now - but with Brexit won't. Let's face it no way are Gove or Boris going to invest in public services. Nor IDS, despite his road to Damascus like conversion to the the plight of the needy.

Under Brexit the poor will remain poor.

Its silly and arrogant to assume anything, we don't know is he only true answer.

Anyway the poor have been getting poorer each year in the EU Hmm

Because they have just been flourishing while we are in the EU Biscuit

Evidence? I've seen lots of rich millionaires basically telling people "don't question us peasants" you will be worse off.

The poor have been getting worse off undet a Tory government. Vote them out & things will improve (especially if there's an economy strong enough to support spending on public services - it could be done now with a different politics in no 10 - would be harder with a smaller economy).

Presumably all those rabid Brexiters will leave the UK should the vote result be "remain" because if the EU is so appallingly bad for us, they will choose to go and live outside the EU - maybe in Norway or Switzerland that they keep raising as a shining beacon? You know, putting their money and prinicples where their mouths are?

Who really believes the economy will be smaller if we Brexit?

The Deutsche Bank was telling its traders to invest in British stock last week when Leave looked set to win.

No Tory & Labour are not the same. (& I don't vote either of them).

As for evidence just google - it's overwhelming. Or watch that john Oliver video I linked to from 5:20 & he summarises in a funny way.

Sorry that FT article is behind a paywall but here it is:

"UK stocks will outperform after Brexit - Deutsche 13 June

It’s time to go big on UK stocks, says Deutsche Bank, which is now recommending investors go overweight on the FTSE and sell German equities just 10 days ahead of Britain’s EU referendum.

Strategists at the German bank think the continent’s stocks will be the biggest casualties of a Brexit vote, as the loss of the EU’s third largest economy will send the eurozone into a renewed growth panic.

Meanwhile, a Brexit-bashed pound would likely support stock prices and mean the FTSE 100 will outperform its peers in the weeks after June 23."

rabid brexiters

We're not rabid. Countries like Australia and Japan do alright, don’t they? To say we will do even better free of the EU’s constraints is not rabid brexiteering– it’s just commonsense.

StillDrSethHazlittMD Are Brexiters any more 'rabid' than Remainers? I think not. Especially if you consider the way Jo Coxs death has been used in the most nasty way by many (not all) Remainers.

No I wouldn't unlike those who want remain that have said they would if leave win.

Not sure using words such as 'rabid' helps your point tbh.

I'm too scared to take the chance things might get better. Things could get a lot worse. So fear of the unknown will see me voting to remain.

I think people are being very dismissive when they just claim that there won't be a recession if we vote to leave. Economics is about people and their behaviours. If enough people are worried about the consequences they will change their behaviours, stop spending and lo and behold you've got a recession. If 49% of people were voting remain and the day after they reduce their spending because they are worried, that might well be enough!

have you not been on twitter re. Brexit?because the only abuse I've had or seen is from brexiters.

meanwhile people are getting physically attacked because they support remain: "A 78-year-old man handing out EU referendum leaflets for the IN campaign was struck in the face" on 19 june www.cumbriacrack.com/2016/06/20/police-appeal-man-attacked-carlisle/ and twitter.com/DrGabsEvans/status/743365580363829248

I have seen it from both sides. Quite a few 'you rascist' 'xenophobic' 'selfish' comments and posts. Which ironically is usually ended with a 'peace' or 'love' sign off.
