AIBU to be upset at DM's reaction to new DD's name

We had great trouble picking a name for our new DD - she was actually nameless for a week while we trawled through 4000-odd names on the Internet, books etc. I mentioned some of the shortlisted ones to DM the other day: her favourite was one DH didn't really like and she said something quite rude about the one we have now chosen, which I sort of ignored at the time. When I told her (on the phone) the name we had eventually chosen there was a silence, then she said, 'You're joking?' And then, 'Oh, well, I'm pleased she's got a name at last anyway.' She is now persisting in calling her Baby so as to avoid saying it. Am feeling oddly hurt. It is a relatively unusual name in England, but it's quite pretty (I think) and not like we called her Moon Unit or anything. Should I have taken her preferences into account?

Eleri is a gorgeous name not at all biased as I also have a Welsh name in fact that was on DPs name shortlist for me Smile. I also knew an Eleri at primary school, she did sometimes get called Eleri the Fairy but as far as playground nicknames go that's not actually that bad Grin

Ignore DM, your little girl is your baby, not hers, so you get the final say.

PotatoBread · 20/06/2016 17:59

It's a lovely name Smile

user12785 · 20/06/2016 17:59

won't WORK on the phone grrr

Wolfiefan · 20/06/2016 18:00

That's a lovely name. How odd that she would make such a comment. Ignore and enjoy your beautiful baby.

DragonMamma · 20/06/2016 18:01

Eleri is a lovely name

queenbean in Wales we would say Eh-lair-e or E-leer-e

Theydontknowweknowtheyknow · 20/06/2016 18:01

Silly DM. That's a lovely name!

needanewjob · 20/06/2016 18:02

Yep my Mum didn't like my daughters name (Isabella or Bella for short) I told her to bugger off she'd had her chance to name her children and now it was my turn!! She started to umm and ahh over my sons name until I reminded her how well her reaction went down last time - she then said she approved (missing the point completely which was that I really don't need her approval when naming my children)

Tanith · 20/06/2016 18:02

As a joke, I told my mother we would be naming DS "Maurice"; "Moggy" for short Grin

She told me, after the briefest pause, that it was a lovely name and completely up to us what we decided as a pet name. It's only because I know her very well that I knew she hated it! She continued to refer to him as "Baby Moggy" right up until we confessed. She even said it was growing on her and she was starting to like it!

That's the correct response when a parent announces the baby's new name. Anything else is rude (and "Eleri" is a beautiful name anyway Smile)

mylovegoesdown · 20/06/2016 18:02

I was hoping this was another 'we've named her Slithery' type MN threads Smile!

Grilledaubergines · 20/06/2016 18:03

I love the name. Your mum is being very unreasonable. But it will grow on her and like the man up thread said, in time she won't imagine her granddaughter could be anything else. I'm pronouncing it to rhyme with celery? Is that right?

Queenbean · 20/06/2016 18:04

Thank you Dragon

Couldn't work out how to pronounce it if rhymes with Fairy. Lovely name :)

steppemum · 20/06/2016 18:05

Tanith - that's lovely, your mum sounds ace.

Sounds like my mum when my brother phoned her to say he was engaged.
Congratulations darling, that is wonderful news.
ummm.... by the way - who to? (he didn't have a girlfriend as far as we knew)

One of my friends has an Eleri, I had never heard it before, it is very pretty.

RB68 · 20/06/2016 18:05

Eleri is a lovely name. My decidedly English parents who live in Wales have 5 grandchildren...all with Irish names ROFL

sonlypuppyfat · 20/06/2016 18:07

Beautiful name my DCs have proper Welsh names loads of vowels and double consonants so I've had tons of grief too

miraclebabyplease · 20/06/2016 18:07

I really love that name.

kiki22 · 20/06/2016 18:08

My mum hats ds's name and made it known she's gotten used to it now she's on to complaining about ds2's name she's hoping we change it once he's born.

Funny thing is that my gran hated both mine and my sisters name, and my great gran hated my mums name its turning into a tradition Grin

SparklesandBangs · 20/06/2016 18:09

My DD have traditional names that DH and I liked, no links to long dead relatives. My DM was happy and to be fair after my sister took forever to decide on her pfb name, just grateful for a name and a spelling she could share.

MIL on the other hand couldn't wait to drag out random long dead relatives with similar names and tell everyone we'd named them after so-and-so, DH did his best to tell her as he'd never heard of them it was highly unlikely. I just smiled and ignored.

Many babies have been born to friends and family over the years and whilst I may have an opinion on a name I keep it to myself and don't even share with others as it would be unfair. Some names take getting use to, some spellings are odd, some nicknames even odder, but it has nothing to do with me.

GreenRut · 20/06/2016 18:10

Beautiful name OP! My Mil doesn't like my dds name and on meeting her for the first time looked at me and said 'are we keeping the name?' I did my best confused 'what could you possibly mean' face and said yes we are. No one's business.

Skiptonlass · 20/06/2016 18:10

Eleri is a lovely name.

We went full norse (I married a swede) and gave our kid a seriously Swedish name. If anyone disliked it they've been too polite to say.

IggyPopsicle · 20/06/2016 18:11

Eleri is a beautiful name (I have a Welsh name too Wink). Don't listen to your DM. She is being dramatic and OTT. You have chosen a lovely name, and congratulations Flowers

Elliepurpleflower · 20/06/2016 18:11

I love that name! It's beautiful :)

PeterandJudithSurname · 20/06/2016 18:12

I love Eleri.

miwelaisjacydo · 20/06/2016 18:14

Eleri is a lovely name 😊

Laiste · 20/06/2016 18:14

Lovely name.

does anyone else remember Candy Rayne?

weeblueberry · 20/06/2016 18:18

I think it's really pretty. We wanted to call our oldest daughter Erika but my mother reacted horribly. As did my dad and my PIL. I always said I wouldn't be swayed by others but it really did take the shine off it for me. To the point we didn't think it was realistic to use it. Sad
