To take some proper coffee to playgroup?

Givemeabone · 19/06/2016 15:18

I go to only playgroup each week. It is on a monday morning and starts at 9:15. I usually drop ds off at school and head straight there with dd.
Most monday mornings are a bit manic and a lot of the time I find myself getting to playgroup having not yet had a brew of any sort.
I could really do with a coffee at that point.
The coffee they have is cheap shite nescafe instant stuff. It's horrible.
Wibu to either take my own proper coffee & cafetiere, which I don't mi d sharing as a little goes a long way. Or atleast take a decent instant coffee, which I won't want to share!

What 'type' of mum bracket would you put me in at your playgroup?

Thanks liinoo I've just bought one Grin
insancerre that's the whole point of my thread, alot of the time I haven't had time or forgotten, and then by the time I get to playgroup I'm wanting a coffee and it's shite!

Would those one-cup coffee filter things be a reasonable compromise?
Waitrose Iti coffee filter (Your preferred supermarket brand may vary Wink)

rookie don't have a go at sapphire I DID ask for some come back suggestions.

I took in some really nice ground instant coffee to ours as I couldn't stand the Nescafé crap they had. Only one other person had coffee, the rest all had tea. No one batted an eyelid, not that I'd care anyway, it's just a cup of coffee! As long as it's out of the way of the children, it hardly matters.

Givemeabone · 19/06/2016 16:43

Sorry bengal I'm with rookie on the caramel latte Envy - vom!

It was just a suggestion Sapphire Confused Op is free to follow it or ignore it. You seem to be getting a bit too wound up by the whole thing.

Peter, I just think it's odd that someone might have to fabricate a story about why they wanted some fresh coffee.

Givemeabone · 19/06/2016 16:49

I do know that a few would be keen on a dresh coffee as I see them at other times during the week, I am friends with them. They have been to my house, I have been to theirs.
Not sure if it's the type of friends I attract, but they ALL have cafetieres. I thought they were a staple kitchen item? Like having a kettle or a toaster.

OP posts:
Givemeabone · 19/06/2016 16:49

ilostitin I already do that Grin

RunLillian · 19/06/2016 16:50

You cannot, cannot, cannot take a cafetiere, or your own coffee. You will look like a supercilious loon (and I speak as a coffee snob who would rather drink dishwater than the sub-Nescafe served at our toddler group).

You can get away with making a proper coffee in a travel mug and arriving clutching it. Mentioned upthread, the paper and card Sainsburys filter bags really are superb and much better than the plastic kind which sit on top of a cup. They are the fastest way to make a decent coffee in the morning IMHO.

The ceramic travel mugs with silicone lid and holder are very good, too; I find that coffee from a thermos style travel mug tastes plasticky.

Givemeabone · 19/06/2016 16:52

Sorry bengal I had a bad experience of a gingerbread latte in Costa once.... Way way too sweet for my liking, it was like drinking sugar. So the thought of any coffee spiked with a syrup makes my stomach churn. Nothing sophisticated about it Wink

Dumdedumdedum · 19/06/2016 16:54

Ooops, sorry, Borntobequiet, you made the same suggestion as I did before me Blush
Personally, I hate cafetiere coffee, can never get it to the right strength and even if I do, it takes hours to clean up the grounds. Much prefer filter coffee, made to my own strength, or that Italian mustachioed man stove-top machine (although grounds there also a pain to clean up)!

Givemeabone · 19/06/2016 16:54

Okay run but whyyyy??!.... Why is it snobbish to want a decent coffee. Also, I hate paying for coffee in a cafe/costa type as it's massively over priced and usually luke warm

Floggingmolly · 19/06/2016 16:55

Oh ok... They're friends, and you're in and out of each other's houses.
I based my reponse on your op; where you said you go to the playgroup as you thought your child should meet the kids he'll be going to school with.
How have they not met already??
Sounds like a completely different scenario Hmm

Givemeabone · 19/06/2016 16:56

dumbedum I prefer a percolator on the stove. We don't have any sort of machine at home. But there's no hob at playgroup Grin

OP posts:
rookiemere · 19/06/2016 16:56

Giveme - do you have a coffee maker at home? It literally takes seconds to put the coffee and water in and switch it on. Another 30s to warm up your coffee in your travel mug. Oh btw I agree Runlillian - we tried those metallic thermos mugs and the coffee never tastes as good, but is fine in my ceramic one.

Far better and easier to do that rather than fannying around with a cafetiere at toddlers group. Also you'd need to remember to bring your own ground coffee each week as well.

rookiemere · 19/06/2016 16:57

Sorry such a fast moving thread - I missed that you said how you did your home coffee Grin.
What's your objection to a travel mug?

witsender · 19/06/2016 16:59

I don't think it is a type of person, everyone I know has a coffee maker of some sort. Just most people either stomach instant when it is on offer or have something else when out and about. I can't/won't drink instant unless a dire emergency so I just don't have coffee in some scenarios. I take a thermo style mug of coffee with me everywhere though. Dh has a little flask he takes. We also have a huge one we take on long journeys.

Aeropress is a less obvious way of making good coffee.

Givemeabone · 19/06/2016 16:59

flogging not everyone at playgroup is someone I see at othertimes aswell. Just a few... 3 infact, occasionally 4. Only 1 of those children will be in my dd's school & they'll be in the yr above.
There are lots more, about 15, at the play group, some of whom have children who will be in my dd's class in school. I don't have much in common with their parents, so the playgroup is the only time I see them and my dd plays with their children.
I probably don't need to go really, but it passes a rainy morning

OP posts:
Givemeabone · 19/06/2016 17:00

And the friends that I do see, I have met at this group

OP posts:
RunLillian · 19/06/2016 17:01

bone: What would you think of these parents?

  • the one who brings antibacterial wipes to clean the shared playgroup toys before their child can play with them
  • the one who whips out organic rice cakes when all of the children sit down for a drink and a biscuit, and physically whips a pink wafer from their child's hand before they can sully their mouth with sugar
  • the one who brings their own toys and books, because the options on offer 'aren't stimulating enough' for their PFB

I'm afraid that overtly bringing your own coffee and going into the kitchen to make it for yourself places you in the same category. It's absolutely not snobby to want a decent coffee, but making it in front of the volunteers who give up their time to run the playgroup would be unspeakably rude.

JuliannalovesCliveBixby · 19/06/2016 17:02

OP if you brought real coffee, I'd make friends with you at the playgroup in the hope you'd share with me! I can't drink nasty instant stuff at all.
Get a really cool travel cup or flask and bring some coffee in it. I used to always make extra filter coffee for the school run in the mornings. It's not weird, it's just having a preference!

Givemeabone · 19/06/2016 17:04

No onjection rookie it's just that sometimes I will make the coffee, it'll sit in the cafetiere and I'll forget about it whilst sorting kids out, then go out.
It's not a case of getring up earlier or being more organised. Alot of the time I get as far as making it, but then forget about it.
I will try harder, and buy a ceramic cup. Or the bodum travel one. That looks fab 😀
