To think 8 stone at 5'4 isn't that slim

I am that weight and height and I often get people telling me how skinny I look and that I need to gain weight.

OP posts:
Aeroflotgirl · 18/06/2016 17:45

I have heard that BMI is not that reliable, what about people that work out and put on muscle, I think i have a fair bit, as have been body sculpting and doing weights for a few years now, the only bit I cannot get rid of despite the amount of abs excersises to the point i am nauseous or sit ups, is my saggy tummy. I am 5 ft 4 with broad shoulders and wide hips, and not a petite frame. I watch what I eat, and have the odd treat during the day. Everyone has different frames, the large majority on here seem like they are quite petite. You have Ectomorphes, Mesomorphes etc

NeedACleverNN · 18/06/2016 17:45

I have issues with food not my weight

I fit in a size 6/8 so my clothing size is fine. Food is something else entirely

I have no illusion on how I look. I know I look thin but I don't think I'm anorexic. I know I'm not fat and I know a bit of weight gain would help me but it's not entirely necessary

HeyManIJustWantSomeMuesli · 18/06/2016 17:47

I think it depends how you define 'skinny' to me it means too slim in an unattractive/unhealthy looking way. To a lot of people is means attractively-slim and to some it just means not-fat. So in answer to your question I wouldn't describe it is skinny - I am a very similar height/weight and am definitely not skinny, but I have a very small build.

Sorry, that was a right old ramble basically, some people might be using 'skinny' as a compliment, some are being bitchy and some may actually think you are too skinny shrug

Banderwassnatched · 18/06/2016 17:48

No no no. I am not triggered by weight. The trigger- for me at least- is 'this is my body, it is this small- is that OK?'. Then i read every comment until i find someone smaller than me. That person validates that I must be fat. It is the competitive weighing that is the issue- just as much as if i started putting ED tips up here.

WorraLiberty · 18/06/2016 17:48

Yeah fair point Bander, you're right there.

But still, why would you not expect weight to be discussed on a predominantly female forum, where lots of those women have been pregnant?

Nanny90 · 18/06/2016 17:49

I'm 5,3 and look and feel my best 7st 10lb. If you like the way you look then it doesn't matter!

WorraLiberty · 18/06/2016 17:50

X posted. My post was in reply to the one to addressed to me.

Gwenhwyfar · 18/06/2016 17:51

"I think it depends how you define 'skinny' to me it means too slim in an unattractive/unhealthy looking way."

That's what skinny means. It's generally an insult. People who use it for slim and average-sized people are thin-shaming them.

Aeroflotgirl · 18/06/2016 17:51

Come on you fatties, come out of here, I am the only fatty on here, helloooooo Grin, I am being outnumbered by all these slim people.

ManonLescaut · 18/06/2016 17:53

Why would expect weight not to be discussed on a female forum full stop?

TaraCarter · 18/06/2016 17:53

Manon Because phobias affect people in a completely different way to disordered thoughts about weight loss!

When one has a phobia, one runs away from threads touching on the subject. Believe me, I know.

Banderwassnatched · 18/06/2016 17:56

But discussing weight is no bother, don't care if you do that. It's the actual factual weigh-in that is an issue, i thought i made that clear?

WorraLiberty · 18/06/2016 17:57

There is a 'drunk thread' in Chat every Friday night and countless 'Wine o' clock' threads at various times.

I'm now seriously wondering if alcoholics/binge drinkers are ever triggered by them?

I have to admit, I've not seen anyone saying so, but I still wonder now.

LillianGish · 18/06/2016 17:59

You sound quite thin and VERY dull to me. I don't think you need to worry about your weight, but you could work on being more interesting which you might find trickier than weight loss. Make a start by obsessing over something other than your weight and dress size - NOONE CARES (no really they don't - especially when they can't see you)

TaraCarter · 18/06/2016 17:59

Bander You made it clear to start with. You really did. If people were reading your posts and not reciting their gip with the word 'triggering', that is.

WorraLiberty · 18/06/2016 17:59

Bander we have a whole weight loss topic with tons of factual weigh-ins.

Should that be banned in case people with eating disorders are drawn to it?

Genuine question. I'm not being argumentative for the sake of it (honest!), I'm just trying to get to the bottom of what a practical solution might be?

JackShit · 18/06/2016 18:03

Ugh. Bad move reading this thread. It has taken me bloody ages...9 months, to lose a stone by dieting and lifting weights. I'm 5 ft 6 and weigh bang on 10 stone, which by the standards of this thread is MASSIVE. I could cry Sad

80sMum · 18/06/2016 18:03

I am 5' 3" and 8st 12lb, which is the heaviest I have ever been. I feel too big and quite 'fat'. Although my BMI is supposedly ok, I know that I am carrying too much fat.

I feel at my fittest and healthiest when I am about 7.5 stone, but I haven't been that weight since pre menopause. Once my periods stopped everything seemed to go downhill!

Banderwassnatched · 18/06/2016 18:07

WL- if the thread was entitled 'weekly weigh in' i woukd never have opened it- should you require such a thing. I don't look in slimming forums or boards to read about how people are slimming in order to be healthier, it is a brave and difficult thing they are doing and i keep my beak well out of it. But i genuinely don't believe we need the 'am I fat, am I thin' threads. ESPECIALLY with the vital stats on the subject line- that, I cannot ignore.

neveradullmoment99 · 18/06/2016 18:08

I'd look pretty poorly at that weight, I am 5'5" and 10st 6lbs, a size 10.

I am like this. In photos, i once weighed a lot less and looked awful. Far too thin. I actually look better the way i am now. I think at 5ft 4 and 8 stone is really very thin.

WorraLiberty · 18/06/2016 18:08

Don't be silly Jack, I don't believe anyone on this thread has alluded to a 5ft 6 inch woman, weighing 10 stone being massive.

But if it's upsetting you, you should probably click on hide thread Thanks

Banderwassnatched · 18/06/2016 18:11

I remember a thread recently where another poster shared her vital statistics- someone immediately calculated her BMI and my god, they were flamed for doing so. Full disclosure- I had already done the same thing. I hadn't posted it, but yes, i haf definitely checked. I can't speak for every ED sufferer, obviously, but i have appraised all the weights on this thread- i can't not do that.

neveradullmoment99 · 18/06/2016 18:12

and i do agree that BMI is a load of

baloney

WorraLiberty · 18/06/2016 18:13

Bander my point was that if people shouldn't discuss weight on internet chat forums because some people with eating disorders will be drawn to them (as has been stated a few times upthread), then they'll also be drawn to the weight loss topic.

I don't know what the answer is.

Either HQ ban all discussion of weight, or people try their hardest to take responsibility and hide those threads/topics, if they find themselves being drawn to them and triggered.

I guess either of those suggestions would be difficult to put into practice.

VioletsAreViolet · 18/06/2016 18:14

8st and 5ft 4is the height and weight I was throughout my late teens and twenties - I never dieted or exercised and people used to ask me how I managed to stay so slim - I still had hips and a bum though so never felt underweight. These days I eat sensibly and exercise regularly, yet I haven't been under 11st in over a decade - I could weep!
