To think 8 stone at 5'4 isn't that slim

I am that weight and height and I often get people telling me how skinny I look and that I need to gain weight.

OP posts:
Babysafari · 18/06/2016 13:42

I think it really depends on your build so impossible to say on here.

I'm 5"6 and 10 stone, could do with losing a bit but I don't think I'd ever be petite because I've got big hips and broad shoulders.

I think we've all lost touch with reality because so many people are overweight these days. I get told I'm skinny but I'm definitely not I'm size 12-14.

Only you know if you're healthy and eating enough.

MC1R · 18/06/2016 13:44

I'm 5'7 and weigh 8st 1...for some reason I've lost a lost of weight over the last 12 months and I don't look at all well now. I'm not trying to, mind, it's just started melting off me for no apparent reason - I suppose I shouldn't complain, it's most women's dream; lose weight with no effort!

I do agree that it depends on your build, though. I have a large-ish frame so it doesn't look good on me. I was 9st+ for years and looked much better then - I'm hitting the Horlicks hard in an attempt to regain!

Aeroflotgirl · 18/06/2016 13:44

Was meant to read, I am that height and I am 10.30 stone, do we have a Michellin icon to represent this massive weight 😁

tiredsotiredso · 18/06/2016 13:47

I am those measurements well just over 8 stone but mostly wear size 10. It really depends on what you look like & feel not the numbers. Those numbers don't mean super healthy & toned or skinny or fat.
If you are not happy then change something, if you are happy then ignore people.
I am probably what is known as skinny fat, eat fatty foods (cheese, wine, etc) & don't exercise, but I am active. But could do a lot more to be healthy, lower my cholesterol & tone the tummy, but because I look slim, I am lazy!
Why did you post?

Kwirrell · 18/06/2016 13:49

People use the word skinny, when they want to insult you. I have the same bmi 5ft at 7:2' I consider my self slim but it skinny.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/06/2016 13:51

MC1R You should probably get a doctor to check you over if your weight has suddenly dropped.
My friend's weight plummeted quite recently and she was desperate to regain some of it. She was diagnosed with Chronn's (sp?) disease and has now reached a much healthier weight with treatment for her illness. Another possibility would be an overactive thyroid but I'm only guessing, I'm not a doctor.

AintNobodyHereButUsKittens · 18/06/2016 13:54

I agree with LostIt, that's quite worrying MC1R - go to your GP, and let let them run some tests, because they will take that amount of unexplained rapid weight loss quite seriously.

MC1R · 18/06/2016 13:54

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties I had blood tests last year but they just showed I was anaemic (low ferritin and haemocrit and haemoglobin I think). They said everything else was fine.

On the plus side, I've gained 2lbs recently!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 18/06/2016 13:59

Totally agree with the others, MC1R - go to your GP asap and get some tests done. Sudden weight loss is not a happy sign in general.

nicolasixx · 18/06/2016 13:59

That's slim - I'm usually about 10lb over and would look better for losing it but I'm just too greedy Grin

Lucked · 18/06/2016 13:59

Amongst my friends (varying heights and builds) we have all been noticeably slim when our BMI was 21 or lower. Not unhealthy but probably would draw comments of "you don't want to loose any more". I had one friend who was obese who lost weight and got those comments at a higher weight but after a few years she did lose more weight and still looked healthy, I think people had to adjust to the new shape.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/06/2016 13:59

Well that's good you've had an MOT, maybe keep an eye on it, could be stress related or something. Sorry to be bossy.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 18/06/2016 14:00

Sorry, xposted. Might be worth a return visit though.
Hope you've done something about your anaemia but I'd push for more investigation myself.

thisisafakename · 18/06/2016 14:01

I am over 7ft tall (there's quite a few of us about of that height). I weigh 6 stone. My BMI is in negative figures. Can anyone reassure me that I am actually a completely normal weight for my completely normal height whilst simultaneously calling me fat by claiming to be taller and lighter? Please?

KindDogsTail · 18/06/2016 14:03

Hadbetterdays
Here is a calculator
www.nhlbi.nih.gov/health/educational/lose_wt/BMI/bmicalc.htm
Your BMI is 19.2
BMI under 18.5 – is considered very underweight and possibly malnourished

So you are very, very slim, but within the healthy range.
Do you feel well? Not tired, not too cold, not getting colds or getting infections frequently? - if yes, you need a better diet. If no, you are probably fine.

Are you eating plenty of vegetables fruit and protein?

PumpkinPies38 · 18/06/2016 14:04

I'm 5'5" and 8 and a half stone and not skinny at all. I have a slim ish upper body but chubby legs. I put it down to the fact I'm all fat and no muscle! I feel I look better at 8 stone exactly but when I am that weight friends and family say I look gaunt.

If you're happy with your weight why do you care what others are saying?

Crunchymum · 18/06/2016 14:04

It's really subjective isn't it?

I'm 5ft 1in and at my lightest I was 7st 7lbs yet still a size
8-10. I wasn't thin yet I was very light.

Now I'm much older, have had 2 kids and 9st puts me at a size 10.

KindDogsTail · 18/06/2016 14:05

Sudden weight loss means a person must see a doctor urgently.

notagiraffe · 18/06/2016 14:09

OP, it's slim but not unhealthily skinny. In my 20s I was 8st 4 at 5'4" and used to get told all the time how tiny I was. I could easily buy children's clothes most of the time, often struggled to find clothes that were small enough to fit, and was laughed at once for putting on a friend's toddler's jumper when it was cold and I didn't have one, but it fitted fine. You're skinnier than that, but it depends on your build. If you have narrow bones, I think 8 st at 5'4" would look lovely and is definitely within the healthy range.

LassWiTheDelicateAir · 18/06/2016 14:12

I'm that height and at age 18 to about mid 20s was 7 stone. I lived on the traditional Scottish diet of chips and chocolate and after I left school did no exercise (I didn't do any exercise at school other than cycle to and from it)

I was around 8st when I became pregnant at 30.

Gwenhwyfar · 18/06/2016 14:14

YANBU, it's slim but not skinny. People who call you skinny are either jealous or have a skewed view of what is normal because the average person has been getting bigger.

maggiethemagpie · 18/06/2016 14:17

I am that height and would love to weigh 8 stone. I tend to look 'medium' at 10 stone, chubby at 11 stone and fat at 12 stone. The one time I got down to 9 1/2 stone I did look and feel thin, not too thin but just about right. So 8 stone would be quite thin for me. Possibly too thin. But we are all different.

originalmavis · 18/06/2016 14:19

I was 7.5 stones - 5 foot 7 until my late 20s. I ate like a starving horse and drank like a sailor on shore leave, and if anyone saw my dad, then they'd realise that I got his genes!

Sadly, there are some utter c who think it absolutely fine to decide that you must be starving yourself or vomiting up every mouthful and tackle you on the subject. And I don't mean in a caring or concerned way.

treaclesoda · 18/06/2016 14:21

I think it's interesting that posters often say 'we've lost sight of what a slim healthy person looks like', because whilst I actually accept that this is true, we are used to seeing bigger people all around us, I also find that on these threads a weight that would have been considered slim 20 years ago is often dismissed as being 'borderline overweight'. I'm in my 40s and when I was at school most girls were fairly slim but weighed around 9 to 9 1/2 stone. I know, because we were once made to publicly weigh ourselves in PE and announce our weights to the class. My heart ached for the girl who was over 6 ft tall and was, understandably, a lot heavier than the rest of us. And of course for the two girls in our year who were visibly overweight.

But now it seems like a 9 stone teenager would be huge.

ghostyslovesheep · 18/06/2016 14:25

no that's really fat - I am 6ft 7" and weight 2 stone - and I still have wobbly bits
