To think 8 stone at 5'4 isn't that slim

Hadbetterdays · 18/06/2016 11:54

I am that weight and height and I often get people telling me how skinny I look and that I need to gain weight.

OP posts:
thebigmummabear · 18/06/2016 12:20

Im also 5ft 4 and am 9st 10 at the moment. The smallest iv been is 7st 10 and the heaviest was 12stone. However i did look and feel overweight at 12 stone and at 7st 10 a lot of people were concerned i had lost to much weight. I would like to be around 9stone as I think that it suits me. I do think 8 stone sounds on the small side, but not worryingly so.

BalloonSlayer · 18/06/2016 12:21

I used to be naturally that size for years, eating what I wanted. Yes it is "that slim" but if you are happy and healthy, so what?

FairNotFair · 18/06/2016 12:22

Underslung you're on!

MariposaUno · 18/06/2016 12:22

I'm that size and weight and like everyone else it depends how you carry it.

I am slim I have no boobs and a small arse but I'm semi toned. its rude of people to comment unless you invite them to do so.

Motherinlawsdung · 18/06/2016 12:24

You sound just fine, especially as you've always been that weight and you have plenty of exercise. Stay as you are and tell the commentators to mind their own business.

loobyloo1234 · 18/06/2016 12:26

Oh one of these posts again ... sighs

'I am very slim, and well within my BMI, but I want other people to reassure me how slim and great I really am so I will post on MN' Hmm

Whilst a few others say 'look at me, look at me ... I am even slimmer and taller' aaaargh

XiCi · 18/06/2016 12:28

It's impossible to say without seeing you because everyone carries weight differently. Some people may look slim and athletic at that weight others may look gaunt. If, as you say, many people tell you how skinny you look and this happens often, then you probably do look skinny.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 18/06/2016 12:29

Yes, it does depend on body shape. I'm 5'5 and at 8st I looked somewhat anorexic and had concave boobs. Another half stone and I looked much better.
I have no waist, straight up and down sort of shape - but at 5'5 my "bottom" healthy weight (well, at the time, some 20 years ago) was suggested to be 7st12 so I was very close to it.

But, as others have said, it's not your weight, height or size that is the problem - it's other people feeling the need to comment and you taking it to heart when they do (if you do).
Ignore them.
So long as you're happy with your weight and size, that's the important thing.

NameChanger22 · 18/06/2016 12:30

It is very slim. I'm 5.6 and I used to weight eight and a half stone. At that weight I was a size 6 and everyone told me I looked too thin.

irregularegular · 18/06/2016 12:30

Well it all depends doesn't it? I'm 5 ft4 and generally weighed just a smidge over 8 stone all my adult life until my early 40s. I've put on a little more recently. For me it was an absolutely natural, healthy weight. No watching what I ate. Slim yes, but not excessively so. But for some people it might be unnaturally slim and make them look gaunt.

shins · 18/06/2016 12:30

I'm 5'2 and weigh 9 stone 9. I'm a size ten and reasonably slim. If I was 8 stone I would look gaunt and haggard but that's probably because I'm 44, I was lighter when I was young. It's hard to tell OP, people have different builds and shape so height alone wouldn't be an indicator of your ideal weight, but 8 stone does sound quite thin.

ChinchillaFur · 18/06/2016 12:31

Well it's certainly not overweight is it!

When you are short (I'm 5'3) even half a stone makes a huge difference to how you look. If you have muscle rather than fat you'll weigh more but wear smaller clothes.

For me, cos I have no boobs, and am much bigger on bottom than top, at 9 stone I look chubby, 8 1/2 is perfect for me. You would not think just 7 lbs would make that much difference, but for me it's a whole clothes size difference - 12 down to 10.

Shitonyoursofa · 18/06/2016 12:35

I'm 5ft 4 and would be overjoyed to be 8st again.....I was at that weight about 7 years ago and definitely considered myself slim, bordering on skinny at a size 8. I'm now 10st and a curvy size 12, would love to magically lose the 2st I have somehow gained when I wasn't paying attention!

IPityThePontipines · 18/06/2016 12:36

What the fuck are these threads all about? Why do they keep coming up? They spark really odd behaviour in people.

Because there are a lot of people out there with issues around disordered eating and body size.

These threads and the "what do you eat?" threads are equally strange.

MissHooliesCardigan · 18/06/2016 12:38

I'm 2' 6" and weigh 74 stone. Do you think I could do with losing a bit of weight?

IWouldLikeToSeeTheseMangoes · 18/06/2016 12:40

Oh goody another weight thread that will tediously drag on for pages and probably get a few backs up. I hope BMI is sufficiently analysed obsessively into the ground AGAIN. Zzzzz......

loobyloo1234 · 18/06/2016 12:48

Where's the poster that does all of the BMI division and makes everyone feel shit about themselves? I do hope she appears rolls eyes

spankhurst · 18/06/2016 12:54

I find it a bit depressing how pretty much all women seem to know their height and weight and clothes size and measurements etc etc as though it all defines them: I'm a 10, I'm an 8, bla blah blah. DH had his free over 40 health check the other day and was pleasantly surprised to discover he's 6ft with a bmi of 24. He didn't have a scooby before, just 'tallish' and doesn't wear the biggest trousers in the shop.

AyeAmarok · 18/06/2016 12:55

I would say it's slim but not overly so. Unlikely to be "skinny", but a nice healthy weight for that height, especially if you're exercising too and fit. But it's certainly a lot slimmer than the average person these days which is where the problem lies.

As this thread can attest to, people will say that they look "ill/gaunt/anorexic" at that height and weight and need to be over 10 stone to look healthy. Which is most probably nonsense.

Ignore.

IWouldLikeToSeeTheseMangoes · 18/06/2016 12:55

loobyloo Grin She'll be along shortly probably fetching the calculator

Aeroflotgirl · 18/06/2016 12:59

I am finding this thread a bit boasty tbh, I am 5 ft 4 and 10.5 stone, so I am morbidly obese and collossel compared to most of you here. I do 40 min of cardio kickboxing, and body sculpting every day, and walk and cycle everywhere, as I can't drive, so I want to dispel the myths, that I just veg on the sofa all day eating family size bars of chocolates and crisps.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 18/06/2016 13:00

You sound fine MissHoolies Grin
It's a bit rude for people to comment on how skinny you are in RL, I think. I used to work with someone that always made comments about how thin I was (wasn't even that thin) like ha ha do you live on lettuce? I would never dream of asking her if she lived on lard.

PollyPerky · 18/06/2016 13:00

I am an inch shorter and weigh less than 8 st by a few pounds. I am not underweight either by my BMI or appearance. It depends on your build. I've got no bum, small boobs and slim legs.

Oysterbabe · 18/06/2016 13:01

I find it a bit depressing how pretty much all women seem to know their height and weight and clothes size and measurements etc etc

Knowing your clothes size and measurements does help for, you know, buying clothes.

Aeroflotgirl · 18/06/2016 13:01

I don't think men have these sorts of issues, well dh is 6ft and 19 stone, he certainly thinks he can give Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp a run for their money size wise, he thinks hes about 10 stone lighter than he is Grin. He is due for his 40 health check soon, so we will see.
