To think 8 stone at 5'4 isn't that slim

I am that weight and height and I often get people telling me how skinny I look and that I need to gain weight.

OP posts:
HelenaDove · 19/06/2016 17:58

Floppitty that does not sound right to me. My ex boss had high cholestorol but she was very slim. 5 foot 5 and 8 stone.

If what your doctor said is true no very slim people would have high cholestorol.

Id be wondering if a little of his own misogyny was creeping in there.

HelenaDove · 19/06/2016 18:00

Floppitty i take my before and after photos to doctors appointments in case i come across a doctor like yours.

Gwenhwyfar · 19/06/2016 20:48

"make people who have sustained some genuinely impressive weight loss (which is slightly more interesting) feel inadequate"

Oh come on, people aren't allowed to talk about their weight because others might feel 'inadequate'? We're all grown ups here.

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 19/06/2016 20:52

If I was 8 stone, I'd disappear! I look good (imo) at about 10 stone when I'm about a size 10/12. I have a way to go to get back there Blush!

Marmalade85 · 19/06/2016 21:04

The hivemind only considers you slim if you weigh under 5 st and you must be at least 5 ft 10. Anything else and you're morbidly obese and all an actual size 20 due to vanity sizing.

LillianGish · 19/06/2016 21:24

OF course people are allowed to come on here and talk about their weight (or anything else for that matter), but the the OP is the equivalent of coming on here and asking "Does my bum look big in this?" without us being able to see the actual bum. People in RL have told the OP she looks skinny - these are people who can actually see her so I would think their opinion carries more weight if you'll pardon the pun) than an Internet forum basing its opinions on pure speculation. Just not sure why you'd come on here and ask that question.

FarAwayHills · 19/06/2016 22:42

I am 5'5" and 8st 6lbs so roughly the same BMI as you OP. Some people might say it's slim but I've got a small frame and tiny boobs so it's normal for me. My weight doesn't fluctuate, I don't actively diet or calorie count. It does not mean I'm happy with my body - my arse is sagging down my legs.

Thefitfatty · 20/06/2016 07:51

Threads like these always convince me that everyone on Mumsnet is incredibly short, with massive boobs and bones made of air. It's the only accounting for the low weights and the feeling that these people are fat at these low weights.

I also haven't bought clothes in the UK in over ten years, but I'm convinced that they are somehow all massively huge regardless of the number on tag.

Felascloak · 20/06/2016 08:02

There's been a few recently fit. It's a bit odd. And a bit fat shamey imo.

Amummyatlast · 20/06/2016 08:04

I'd like to know where all these sale clothes 12 and below are beetroot, as when I look in the shops there are always loads of 14 and above. I don't generally bother rooting through the sales as I know I'm unlikely to find an 8 or a 6.

Piemernator · 20/06/2016 08:18

Same height here and was 8st most of my life weigh more now I'm peri menopausal but not sure as i don't really weigh myself.

I have found as a naturally slim build, I'm half Chinese and petite people are bloody rude about being slim.

Zhabr · 20/06/2016 08:27

I am exactly that height and weight (need to google it as I only knew in kg, 164 cm 51 kg). I am not skinny at all. Size 8-10 depending on the shop. I am very flat chested though. The only person who says I need to gain weight is my DM who is size 14.

Marynary · 20/06/2016 08:35

It depends not only on your body build but also on your age. For example DD (age 16) is your height but weighs about 7st. It looks fine on her because she is narrow build and a young face.
I try to keep my BMI above 20 now that I am in my late 40s otherwise my face is a bit gaunt.

Threads like these do seem to attract slimmer (or at least low weight) posters, much like the "how much do you drink a night" posts attract teetotallers. I think some people are proud of what they view as an accomplishment and like to say it, whereas others, who are more comfortable with their own weight, or who are ashamed of their weight, don't feel comfortable posting.

PatMullins · 20/06/2016 08:45

Ahem..
I am 49kg and 5ft 3- I don't look skin and bone, have squidgy bits etc
The height and weight don't always = x

Sellingyesterdaysnews · 20/06/2016 08:54

Culturally in general people have become bigger over the last decade and so we now expect people to look well rounded and don't notice even when people are quite over weight, compared to say the seventies when virtually everyone was quite thin.
So check you are in the normal BMI range . If you are then
you are slim ..rather than underweight.

That is true but I think that a thread like this is also going to attract people of similar height/weight because they are more likely to know what it looks like.

SingingSamosa · 20/06/2016 09:02

I am 5'3" and 9st. I consider that to be a good weight for my height as I have quite muscly legs from running to the point I can't fit them in long boots anymore and so they aren't spindly. The lightest I've been as an adult is around 8st 10lbs and I used to have a lot of people telling me I looked skinny, although I didn't feel I was. At 8st I would look gaunt and ill and I would just be cold and lacking in energy I think.

LobsterQuadrille · 20/06/2016 09:06

Bander I could relate 100% to everything you said on this thread yesterday. It's like an invisible magnet that draws us in.

Gwenhwyfar · 20/06/2016 09:10

"And a bit fat shamey imo."

Not this again. How is it fat shaming?

Felascloak · 20/06/2016 09:12

Just the undertone of the OP - 8 st is not slim.
On another thread I got told that I can't look slim at bmi 22.
God knows how that makes someone feel with a higher BMI, when people with reasonably low weights are being told they aren't slim. It annoys me.

Gwenhwyfar · 20/06/2016 09:17

8st is slim for someone of the OP's height, to say otherwise (i.e. to say it's skinny) is to thin shame!

Shouldn't people of around the same height and weight be allowed to have a conversation about something without others getting upset about what it means for them. Nobody's talking about high BMIs here.

Felascloak · 20/06/2016 09:20

Yes I agree gwen! OP seems to be implying it's not though Confused
I hate chat about being to skinny as well, it's just as bad. But 8 st at 5'4" is slim imo and I don't know why someone would post otherwise if not to make people feel bad about their weight.

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 20/06/2016 09:28

I find it so upsetting that these threads exist.

'Slim' surely refers to size, whereas 'underweight' is how much you weigh.

There is no way 8 stone at that height is anything other than 'slim' even if it isn't underweight.

But it doesn't matter. These threads don't matter. Be happy in your skin.

FrozenAteMyDaughter · 20/06/2016 09:29

I am 5 foot 4 and my recollectiin of BMI charts is that the healthy range is 8st 6 to 10st 6. When I was 8 stone as a teenager, I lost my periods for a year. They returned when I got back to 9st. So, like other Pps, I think a lot is down to personal body shape/make up and other factors. At the time, the 80s most of my friends were round 8/8.5 stone, even taller ones, and it was regarded as a normal weight. I do think weight and shape expectations have grown in the years since. Mind you, I am overweight even by modern standards and must do something about it (just as soon as I have finished this biscuit).
