Why isn't London lighting up for Orlando?

Cleo1303 · 14/06/2016 09:43

All over the world prominent landmarks were lit up in rainbow colours to show respect and solidarity for the victims of the Orlando massacre and their loved ones.

After the Paris and Brussels massacres London lit up the London Eye, the National Gallery, the London Eye and other landmarks. Why aren't we doing the same for Orlando? Is it because they were Americans, or is it because they were gay?

Crowds in London supporting Orlando

user1465023742 · 14/06/2016 12:39

You haven't answered the question, OP. Did you go to a vigil to pay your respects?

coffeetasteslikeshit · 14/06/2016 12:42

Maybe there is a subconscious feeling that as the Americans are stupid enough to allow the sale of guns to a man on a terrorist watch list then it's their own stupid fault when he then uses said guns to shoot them up and so some people can't be bothered showing their support?

I'm just musing btw, I don't go in for all these displays of grief etc myself.

carryam · 14/06/2016 12:42

The vigil in a variety of Cities in Britain were organised by local LGB people.

papayasareyum · 14/06/2016 12:42

Op probably hid the thread when people started telling her to go fuck herself

kitchenunit · 14/06/2016 12:44

It's bonkers coffee isn't it?

PaulAnkaTheDog · 14/06/2016 12:45

No one told the op to go fuck herself. You're embellishing now.

TheNewStatesman · 14/06/2016 12:48

I hate to say it, but I suspect a lot of it is due to ennui.

This is rapidly becoming the new normal.

Gottagetmoving · 14/06/2016 12:49

You don't have to have a display to show respect or sympathise with the victims.
Instead of Cities displaying pretty colours, why don't they/we get the Politicians to stop creating terrorism in the first place.
It is a shallow gesture IMO and I get sick of all the people wailing about it on Social media.
The World is fucked... A few lights don't change that.

Read the full thread Paul and you'll see a couple of posters did say ODFOD (oh do fuck off dear) and one poster called her a wanker. Someone did tell her to "go fuck yourself" but it appears to have been removed. I didn't report it, so someone else must have.

coffeetasteslikeshit · 14/06/2016 12:53

Tis indeed kitchen.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 14/06/2016 12:56

Ah, so one person said something and it was removed, not exactly how you described it. As for odfod, that's said all over mumsnet. I think it's far more likely that the op has done what she wanted (stir shit up) so has now buggered off.

ShtoppenDerFloppen · 14/06/2016 12:57

There were various reports in the press about many other countries lighting up for Orlando and lots of pictures and I felt sorry we weren't doing the same.

We? So you rushed out to bathe the front of your house in rainbow lights, then? No? Why not? Didn't you know that changing the lighting colour on something is almost as effective as Facebook activism in effecting change?

papayasareyum · 14/06/2016 13:02

no, not one person, Paul. Several people called her names and were extremely rude and unpleasant indeed.

OddSocksHighHeels · 14/06/2016 13:03

Muslim Mayor, why do you think.

Seriously? Come on now!

trafalgargal · 14/06/2016 13:06

Not everyone makes big gestures just to get on the news.

A friend on mine (who is straight) posted that she is showing her support in person by Volunteering for London's Gay Pride.....and posted the details for others to do the same ........takes more effort but is a lot more constructive and speaks louder than a few coloured lights. Most FB keyboard warriors wouldn't get off their backsides and physically stand up and be counted -which speaks volumes.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 14/06/2016 13:06

Yes one person. One person apparently told her to 'go fuck herself' and it was removed. I have to say, I never saw it and I read the thread pretty thoroughly but there is a deleted comment so I'll give the benefit of the doubt and say that's it. So no, not people telling her to go fuck herself.

MrsHathaway · 14/06/2016 13:06

The FB algorithm doesn't show everything that's available. My feed has been at least 25% Orlando-related because FB expects me to react to that kind of post.

The guy at FB who developed the flag filter has moved on to greater and better things, hence the change from a full flag filter to a "We Are Orlando" banner. But it's there.

Islamophobic post reported. Muslims have been among the first to show sympathy, donate blood, and express solidarity. This is about homophobia, gun control and terrorism, not religion.

papayasareyum · 14/06/2016 13:07

So ODFOD is ok because it's all over mumsnet and it's ok to call someone a wanker?

thecatfromjapan · 14/06/2016 13:07

I was the one who suggested the behaviour was onanistic - after OP repeatedly failed to take on board comments that there had been a response.

I'm afraid I have to concur with Paul: the evidence strongly suggests this was started for somewhat disingenuous reasons.

I'd suggest that posters also think hard about re-posting comments that really should just be reported.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 14/06/2016 13:10

Only one person called her a wanker, out of over 100 posts. Not bad considering the goady drivel she posted. Don't make out she's been given a terrible time. She posted something goady, people commented on it.

The most offensive part of this thread was the op suggesting that the lack of public support for Orlando (which has been shown to be false) is because the victims were Gay and American.

thecatfromjapan · 14/06/2016 13:12

I didn't call OP a wanker. I asked if she might stop acting as though she were one.

There's a lot of subjunctive mood in that, rather than 1 to 1 identity correlating.

Just saying.

user1465023742 · 14/06/2016 13:15

Muslim Mayor, why do you think

You mean the Muslim mayor who was in Old Compton Street for the vigil last night?

Were you?

Do get your facts straight before you post such drivel.

gamerchick · 14/06/2016 13:16

Wait, we're supposed to do shit to our facebook when horrible things happen?
