Why isn't London lighting up for Orlando?

Cleo1303 · 14/06/2016 09:43

All over the world prominent landmarks were lit up in rainbow colours to show respect and solidarity for the victims of the Orlando massacre and their loved ones.

After the Paris and Brussels massacres London lit up the London Eye, the National Gallery, the London Eye and other landmarks. Why aren't we doing the same for Orlando? Is it because they were Americans, or is it because they were gay?

OP posts:
thecatfromjapan · 14/06/2016 12:11

... and I will refer people back to Donkey's earlier post regarding confirmation bias ...

MorrisZapp · 14/06/2016 12:11

Yup, my FB friends have paraded links, rainbows, quotes and videos of choirs.

Maybe your FB friends aren't into that stuff.

papayasareyum · 14/06/2016 12:12

My facebook feed has been similar to yours, Manic.
Still unsure why the op deserved several odfods and a "go fuck yourself"ShockHmm

manicinsomniac · 14/06/2016 12:12

Really? Oh ok, I'm quite surprised but pleased there is reaction out there. I've been on fb for 10 years and have never got round to deleting anyone so I've got 800+ friends from all faiths, backgrounds, political viewpoints, levels of education, professions, geographical areas and dozens of different countries. And still seen no more than the odd reference to the event - literally just the one I think. Bizarre!

PaulAnkaTheDog · 14/06/2016 12:13

kitchenunit

See that exactly the problem manic

You, and presumably by extension everyone else, measures the depth of feeling about terrorist attacks and other atrocities by facebook statuses

It's fucking tragic and makes me want to weep.

This.

kitchenunit · 14/06/2016 12:14

I haven't had sandy thing on Facebook at all.

So I can conclude that either

a) my friends are homophobic anti Americans and are glad it happened

or

b) they don't measure grief in click bait

It could also be

c) they don't care

It's anyone's guess really but I suspect b)

kitchenunit · 14/06/2016 12:15

anything

Bloody cracked phone screen!

manicinsomniac · 14/06/2016 12:15

You, and presumably by extension everyone else, measures the depth of feeling about terrorist attacks and other atrocities by facebook statuses

No, not at all.

But it's a quick and easy initial indicator of a large number of people. You get a visual representation of 100s of different peoples thoughts all in one place. I rarely talk to more than a dozen people face to face at any one time.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 14/06/2016 12:16

My Facebook is filled with it and I have far fewer friends on Facebook than you. Perhaps you don't get all of them on your timeline and if you looked at individual profiles you'd see more? Don't Facebook filter things on the timeline so you see updates from people you mainly interact with?

kitchenunit · 14/06/2016 12:16

Just because they change their status doesn't mean they care. It doesn't mean anything at all.

user1465023742 · 14/06/2016 12:18

I shall find out who arranged the other lights and lobby them

Orrrr you could do something useful and lobby for gun control and gay rights, but hey. Sparkly lights are clearly more important to you.

SatansLittleHelper2 · 14/06/2016 12:19

Oh ffs. A few shitty lights will not change a thing. Op, are you aware that people are killed in certain parts of the world daily ?? Acts of terrorism in some areas are considered the norm and we don't hear a thing about it (( unless people from more civilised parts of the world are among the victims Hmm ))

Are their lives worth less ?? We don't light up for them. For a few days each year we might piss and moan about the children who die each day for a lack.of clean water and enough to eat, some of us give money to make ourselves feel better but we don't light up buildings for them.

Because lighting up buildings does fuck all. As does posting on social media and making youtube videos. Not. A. Thing.

The.way to.change things is to.challenge them, if you overhear someone being homophobic or showing ignorance towards people because of their religion, their skin colour or whatever then pull them up on it.

The sad fact is people don't like to put their money where their mouth is when it comes to that. They look away and hide behind the comfort of facebook posts, how many likes they can get and pretty lit up monuments.

manicinsomniac · 14/06/2016 12:19

No, I haven't said anything either, kitchenunit and don't intend to. But, as I said, I didn't say anything about France or Belgium either. I don't see the need. But I saw 100s of posts about both the latter events for days after they happened and just one solitary one for Orlando. So I noticed the difference (all those people who did post for the first two but nnot this) and pondered - briefly - on why. And this thread reminded me that I noticed. That's all.

However, other people have since said that they did see a large online reaction so the point is null and void anyway.

kitchenunit · 14/06/2016 12:20

Sorry manic it sounds like I'm rowing with you. I'm not. I'm actually vaguely surprised that the sheeple haven't been frantically sharing and clicking "bet you won't share" statuses.

Yeah I dunno why some stuff catches on and some stuff doesn't. Maybe it is because they were gay, who knows?

papayasareyum · 14/06/2016 12:21

I've seen a few memes like this, so it's not just you, op

Why isn't London lighting up for Orlando?
SpaceUnicorn · 14/06/2016 12:21

Just because they change their status doesn't mean they care. It doesn't mean anything at all

Or it means that they've recognised the expectation that a public display of grief is essential nowadays to avoid assumptions of a lack of empathy from some quarters.

Got to be seen to do 'the right thing', publicly, if you don't want to be condemned for 'not caring' Hmm

kitchenunit · 14/06/2016 12:22

PaulAnkaTheDog · 14/06/2016 12:24

Fuck, we're talking about memes now? I'm out. This thread is fucking stupid. It all started because of the op's apparently unintentionally inflammatory post which also happened to be absolute shite. The only bonkers thing is anyone trying to stick up for her pov.

DonkeyOaty · 14/06/2016 12:25

an apposite Indy article about the atrocities in Paris last year with ref to overlaying flag It's wordy (of course) but do have a read.

manicinsomniac · 14/06/2016 12:28

No worries, kitchenunit - I'm not invested in the 'argument' particularly either! Grin

Though I do find it quite interesting that that cartoon posted above even exists.

papayasareyum · 14/06/2016 12:28

Paul, you do realise it's possible to be horrified at the horrific murder of 50 innocents and at the same time aware of the way it's been handled in the news and on social media?

SpaceUnicorn · 14/06/2016 12:29

Thanks, Donkey, that article makes some very good points.

thecatfromjapan · 14/06/2016 12:29

YEs. It's reached the illogicality event horizon:

  1. There hasn't been a response.

Reply: There has.

  1. There hasn't been a response because people in the UK hate LBGT people an Americans.

Reply: There has been a response. Quite a large one.

3.. I haven't seen a response, therefore there hasn't been a response.

Reply: Perhaps you have missed it, but there has been a response. Quite a substantial one.

  1. There has been a response - but actually that doesn't mean people actually care.

Reply: That's a bit nasty.

  1. People who have responded are just doing grief tourism.

Reply: That's a bit nasty.

And on, and on, and on.

I'm out, too.

Are we allowed to use the word 'disingenuous' any more?

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 14/06/2016 12:29

I'm sure there are 101 reasons why they didn't, not just the inflammatory two options you offer

this.
