Why isn't London lighting up for Orlando?

Cleo1303 · 14/06/2016 09:43

All over the world prominent landmarks were lit up in rainbow colours to show respect and solidarity for the victims of the Orlando massacre and their loved ones.

After the Paris and Brussels massacres London lit up the London Eye, the National Gallery, the London Eye and other landmarks. Why aren't we doing the same for Orlando? Is it because they were Americans, or is it because they were gay?

We? Who is we? Your opening post was incredibly inflammatory, I'm baffled you can't see that.

Cleo1303 · 14/06/2016 10:50

I really don't understand why the person who arranged the lights after Paris and Brussels didn't do the same on this occasion. I was NOT saying it was BECAUSE they were gay or BECAUSE they were American. I genuinely was expecting the rainbow lights and I think it is a good thing to do.

I'm going to hide this bloody thread and the others.

Go and hawk your gratuitous tragedy vampirism elsewhere, OP it makes me heave. So many atrocities and loss of life everywhere and you think 'pretty lights' will make the difference. It might satisfy your shallow NEED to be SEEN to be GRIEVING, but you aren't fooling anybody.

thecatfromjapan · 14/06/2016 10:53

Cleo, posters on this thread have told you that there have been rainbow lights. And vigils. Across the UK (including in London).

You missed them.

I don't think people are being particularly mean.

AugustaFinkNottle · 14/06/2016 10:53

OP, have you not noticed the posts pointing out that rainbow lights were displayed in London?

Cleo1303 · 14/06/2016 10:54

"We" - I meant the British public. I think the lights would have been a good thing, but if you don't that's fair enough.

I didn't intend to be inflammatory.

OP posts:
thecatfromjapan · 14/06/2016 10:57

Lying - that was mean.

I agree that rainbow lights aren't a panacea.

Nevertheless, acknowledgement matters.

It's also a fact that humans do feel empathy and shared pain. To dismiss that as 'grief vampirism' is to really trivialise and undermine the bonds of care towards others that underpins a lot of social and political life.

Laiste · 14/06/2016 10:57

I think the lights would have been a good thing

There were lights.

thecatfromjapan · 14/06/2016 10:58

Cleo: "I think the lights would have been a good thing."

OK. Your continued use of the subjunctive is pissing me off.

Stop being a wanker.

Cleo1303 · 14/06/2016 10:59

Yes, I have heard on the thread that there were some more vigils than were reported in the press and I was pleased to hear that.

LyingWitch I don't need to be seen to be grieving. What are you talking about?

Of course "pretty lights" don't make a difference.

"gratuitous tragedy vampirism", oh please. How old are you? 14?

RunRabbitRunRabbit · 14/06/2016 10:59

Moan, moan, moan, everyone else should do stuff, how dare they not, they are probably something-ist. Is it because they were Americans, or is it because they were gay? Riiiiiight. Yeah, London, famously anti-gay and anti-American. Not.

Your "I was genuinely expecting" gives me the rage.

How about you do something? How about you actually find out who arranged it last time and lobby them. How about you arrange something in your town. Instead of whinging that other people aren't doing what you would expect.

You know that "stuff" is done by people, right? You are a person. Do stuff if you care about it.

if you didnt mean to be inflammatory, then why did you put

"Is it because they were Americans, or is it because they were gay?"

Do you really think that the UK would not light up for those reasons??

here, Biscuit, this is for you

Your opening post was incredibly inflammatory

Exactly. Then you complain when others point it out.

PerryHatter · 14/06/2016 11:05

There are other ways to show support rather than some rainbow lights, you know. Although, there were lights all over the uk and people coming together to support, so what exactly is your complaint? What more do you expect?

GabsAlot · 14/06/2016 11:09

the american and gay points were inflammtory

lights were on all over the country and a massive vigil in soho and other cities where people came together to support them which is much more important

PausingFlatly · 14/06/2016 11:11

Hmm The vigils are main news on the BBC: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-36520620

There may be more as well, but even a few seconds' research would have shown you there's no shortage of demonstrations of solidarity.

Pride flag at half-mast over City Hall, too - home of the London Assembly and Mayor Sadiq Khan, so as official a response as can be.

kitchenunit · 14/06/2016 11:22

If you don't have your house done up in rainbow lights you love terrorism

Fact.

Bet you aren't brave enough to put this as your status for one hour. How many of my friends blah blah yadda yadda VOM.

Unless you were deliberately avoiding all news on this subject it would be pretty difficult to miss that there have been a lot of vigils. Which makes me question the intentions behind this entire thread...

TooMuchMNTime · 14/06/2016 11:29

Bit baffled how this thread has turned out
I don't know what was lit up apart from the NT but I think it would be odd if we didn't have what we had for France. Is there a new Mayoral team looking after this? It can be a bit chaotic when the new team arrives. I think Wembley was lit up for Paris a couple of days after though.

mimbleandlittlemy · 14/06/2016 11:31

The London Eye was lit up in rainbow colours last night.

kitchenunit · 14/06/2016 11:32

Yes that's probably it TooMuch. The new mayoral team were still trying to work out which box they'd put the cups in, and missed it.
