Sadiq Khan shouldn't be able to tell us what is an unhealthy body

So the London Mayer has banned adverts with “Unhealthy or Unrealistic” body images. Doesn't this just all feed into people these days unaware of what a healthy body image is? This woman is in great shape and looks very healthy to me.

Sorry if there has been a post on this, I find the advanced search here not that great.

OP posts:

Rather than reading a badly worded blog that tells you nothing really. Read one
Of the many news articles that covers this. Something that actually gives his reasons and then decide if it's a good idea or not. Not sure why the terrible blog was linked, it tells you nothing.
This was the first one I found
www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/body-shaming-adverts-banned-london-transport-tube-sadiq-khan-a7079591.html

Pagwatch · 14/06/2016 08:37

Op. Is it your blog by any chance?

If you don't reply then I will assume it is.

mollie123 · 14/06/2016 08:37

should the same (for equality) be the banning of ads that feature men with biceps and a 6 pack - as they adversely affect young males and their body image. Hmm

Topseyt · 14/06/2016 08:37

I love Sadiq Khan.

I am not a Labour voter, but would definitely vote for him.

The advert was shaming to all who will never be able to achieve that type of body shape. If SK recognises that then brilliant.

branofthemist · 14/06/2016 08:38

Forgetting that advert for a minute.

Who decides what's unhealthy?

Will they ban plus size models too?

MumOnTheRunCatchingUp · 14/06/2016 08:40

That's what the man body should look like

It's how we are designed

Yes!!!! Ribs are supposed to be visible!
We have lost sight of what a human should look like

But yes, plus size models should be banned too

branofthemist · 14/06/2016 08:40

Ban all airbrushed adverts.

This ^

Tokelau · 14/06/2016 08:42

Op. Is it your blog by any chance?

I think it could well be the OP's blog. The OP and the blog both contain the same spelling mistake for mayor.

glassgarden · 14/06/2016 08:43

If you want to get this kind of body through workout alone, you would have to spend the majority of your life working out, leaving little time to do other things such as work, look after family and so on

Rubbish, an active lifestyle and a healthy diet will keep people slim...well it used to pretty obesity epidemic
Problem is more once you start getting fat and eating modern hyper palatable food its hard to reverse the process

But anyway this is just a diversion, his overarching aim is getting women to cover themselves sneaking in under the guise of ' we must all be careful not to upset fat people'
Next we'll have to be careful not to offend women who are plain looking, attractive slim women will be required to cover faces and bodies

Pagwatch · 14/06/2016 08:44

Branofthemist

I would image they would if the ad was suggesting that only by being a certain size of shape is necessary to do something perfectly ordinary like going to the beach.

I don't think he's planning to certain size of person but they way in which people seeing the ads are made to feel about being less than photoshopped.

I can't think of many ads where people are made to feel ashamed about their body because they are not overweight like the model.

I guess I just didn't read the advert the same way as others. I understand that it was false advertising and banned for that reason, but at no point did I see that advert and think that it implied that it was the only version of healthy.

Certainly didn't make me rush out and buy the product!

PurpleDaisies · 14/06/2016 08:48

Brilliant move indeed, sneaking in an Islamic agenda by appealing to the fat vote at a time when the majority of people are fat.

Is this appealing to the fat vote? Where's your evidence that thin people like to be confronted with adverts telling them they have to look a certain way to be acceptable on the beach?

glassgarden · 14/06/2016 08:48

Obviously he will now have to ban all images of men with fit looking lean bodies

splendide · 14/06/2016 08:49

We have lost sight of what a human should look like

What a bizarre comment. Who gets to have the final say on what a human should look like? Are you limiting this to weight or is there a height or an eye colour that we "should" have. "Should" a sub saharan African woman look like a Swedish one? Or do they have different platonic ideals?

bibbitybobbityyhat · 14/06/2016 08:49

"In the same way that a blog by a twit is not the same as an article"

Grin Paggy. So true.

bloodyteenagers · 14/06/2016 08:49

Frikka, read one of the many news articles where he explains his reasons. Rather than the dull blog from the op who explains nothing.

ProfessorPreciseaBug · 14/06/2016 08:50

In reply to Purple daysies.. from the beeb...

"the Advertising Standards Agency (ASA) watchdog later ruled the advert depicting a bikini-clad female model was neither offensive nor irresponsible"

Zarah123 · 14/06/2016 08:51

FrikkaDilla

How would Sadiq Khan prefer us to dress? In Burquas perhaps?

MN needs a 'hide poster' option.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 14/06/2016 08:51

Omafg glassgarden. Can't think what to say but your post about an Islamic agenda has not gone unnoticed!

ProfessorPreciseaBug · 14/06/2016 08:52

... should have added .. I don't much like the image and it would not get me to want to buy the product.. indeed the opposite..

glassgarden · 14/06/2016 08:52

I want to ban adverts showing wealthy people with palatial homes because I know I'll never achieve that kind of lifestyle and it makes me feel depressed which is unhealthy

Zarah123 · 14/06/2016 08:55

Tokelau

Well spotted. I think it's the OP's blog too.
