AIBU to panic! Help please!

Sorry I know this is not the ideal section but I'm panicking!

I've just seen the midwife, I'm 34+4 and she's referred me for an urgent scan tomorrow. I think she's concerned about babies growth!

Blood pressure is fine. Baby heartbeat is strong and she's very active.

Should I worry? I can't get hold of my partner to talk to him and just need some reassurance thanks! Xxx

What has made her refer you? Did she measure your bump and the measurement was off?

I've had growth scans with all three of mine after weird fundal height measurements and there's never been an issue with my dc.

Can you phone midwife team for reassurance?

Baby being active is a good sign!

Yes she measured my bump three times and then refered me. She said if they can't get me in for a scan tomorrow I have to go in to be monitored regardless and have the scan Thursday x

Try not to panic.
Your blood pressure is good and baby is active so good signs!

I had similar about growth with dd and she ended up being 7 lb 3 at 37 weeks.

I had two growth scans with ds. He was fine both times.

Midwife did fundal height, first time was measuring too big, second too small.

Scans confirmed he was fine and the right size both times.

Midwife told me it's not reliable the way they measure, eg you might have had a big dinner or need a wee, so measure bigger. And when baby is engaged you might measure a little smaller than expected.

Did she tell you why she's referred you? X

I had a growth scan and placental Doppler for DS2, was measuring 34 weeks at 40. All scans were fine and he came out at 40+4 weighing 8lb 5oz. Try not to worry OP

Thanks ladies! I feel a bit better now and less irrational! Phew!

I think bump is measuring smaller than last time or hasn't grown in 3 weeks x

I agree that surely your midwife should have told you why you were being referred and it would be perfectly reasonable to call and ask them. If it was really urgent she could have sent you straight there so try not to worry! (Easier said than done I know).

so you're still within the normal range but getting towards the lower end of it? I would think they're erring on the side of caution, because your latest measurement is to the lower side of the normal range and they just want to check. Hope you get t ospeak to your partner soon and the scan goes ok.

I had the same thing happen to me. My bump was measuring the same as it did 3 weeks previous. I was about 36 weeks. All was okay and I'm now at here typing this whilst cuddling an 11 day old healthy baby boy. Wishing you all the best with your pregnancy.

Try not to worry. If it is about baby's growth, measurements at this stage are notoriously unreliable.

I had the same midwife as one of my NCT buddies. At about the same stage as you, we were both referred for scans because of growth concerns. Me because the baby was measuring too big. She because the baby was measuring too small.

We had our babies within a few days of each other. Both perfectly normal sized, in fact hers was a pound or two more than mine.

It's good to get it checked out, but no need to worry right now.

fundal height is so very inaccurate. I was measured smaller at 30 weeks than 20 weeks (or similar, don't remember the dates but I remember I had apparently shrank. Baby was totally fine). Good you get checked out, but don't panic.

I had to go for a growth scan at 30 weeks. Baby looked fine. At every midwife appointment that followed I was told the baby would be on the small side (they measured me with the stupid tape measure). A few days before I gave birth again the midwife said the baby would be small.
She was 8lb9!!

I was sent for an extra scan at 36 weeks, as my fundal height was 4 or 5 cm below what it should have been. It was bonkers really, as I'm tall anyway (so more likely to measure under), and you could see when I was being measured that the baby had decided to decamp entirely to the right hand side of my body. I was so lopsided it made any measuring an absolute joke.

Needless to say, everything was fine, except for the sonographer tutting a lot.

They have to refer you for a scan as it's protocol. It's most likely that the baby has changed position or moved further down.

I know 2 people who had unfounded growth concerns from tummy measurements.

My girl dropped down a lot in her growth at 36 weeks, she was induced at 37 and was a very bonny baby!

Did the same person measure it every time?, there are meant to be standard points but in reality they can vary depending on the midwife, have you lost weight yourself? You might not realise you have but if your tummy fat has depleted that could make a difference

I had to go for a growth scan was measuring too big.

Baby born early, tiny, it was all water but while the midwife was totally wrong in her prediction of a 10lb baby someone else picking up her concerns saved ds.

Try not to worry. You're being cared for well.

Similar to a lot of people here. At 6 days over due bump was measuring at least 4 weeks too small. Sent to the hospital for monitoring for the ctg to come out "perfect" in their words. Baby was born 8 hours later weighing 7.5lb.
Try not to worry too much but I know it's easier said than done!

Oh, and it's completely normal to freak out like that, especially if this is your first pregnancy or this is something you didn't experience in previous pregnancies. Freaking out isn't going to harm your baby, unless you used it as an excuse to go and get drunk or something like that.

So glad to hear you're feeling reassured. If it helps, I was referred for growth scans for my 'enormous' baby. He was born, full term, weighing less than 6lbs which shows how wrong they can be! Good luck for the scan tomorrow and enjoy seeing your little one again.

I was told that at 34 weeks my baby was already 7.5 lbs. That by the time she was born she would be likely close to 10lbs. They scared the life out of me.

She was born at 40 weeks weighing 8.3 and I have since been told by many people that estimations of weight are regularly wildly inaccurate.
