AIBU to want a sunblock that lasts all day!

My son's school says I need to put the sunblock on before he goes into school, so it's got to last hours, he can't put it on himself at school.

I'd already bought this, what I thought would be super one, but it says "...reapply when in the sun and then every 1-2 hours"

The print on the bottles is totally illegible to my eye sight so I am now hunting long lasting suncream!

I found these on line, very expensive, and it doesn't say how long they last!

Buy an all day long one then!

My ds is so pale he' almost grey, and we use ultrasun 50+. Once a day application, and he's never been even slightly burnt in the 3 years I've used it. Qvc or superdrug best for buying it when on offer.

P20?

Ultrasun once a day application. I use it on the whole family. Will last a day although I think 8 hours.

Boots does a all day long one too as do other places

P20. I use the factor 50. You do need to let it dry on for 10 minutes before they get dressed, but it works

Dermatologists don't reccomend all day sunscreens (and they can't be sold as such in Australia).

If it's high factor then it'll probably do for all day at a push - why can't he reapply during the day ? Send him in with a sunhat too - that will help.

Hi, I have extremely pale and sun sensitive skin, and in the last 12 months, I've switched to Eucerin SPF 50, which I've found very effective, and not had to pile it on every hour like I've had to with other factor 50s by cheaper brands in the past. I find I can wear it out in middle of the day sun for 3 hours plus, and still not burn. I love it! I used to use Nivea, but found it to be weak in comparison.

We use the Boots kids Soltan Once 50 SPF stuff for DS (and us). There are two sorts of the kids variety - one that is meant to last 8 hours, and one that lasts a bit less but is more water resistant.

The other stuff in the Soltan range I wouldn't touch with a bargepole, after smothering myself in the Soltan 50 SPF hypoallergenic baby stuff and starting to fry after 30 minutes Very very glad I discovered that was utterly useless before using it on DS.

Should point out that DS has inherited my relatively sun tolerant skin, so can't speak for how well it'd do on a milk pale redhead. (Makes the shitty baby Soltan stuff that I burnt with even more )

We use Ultrasun. DH gets awful prickly heat in the warm weather and has to have prescription antihistamines to control it, Ultrasun is the only thing which doesn't aggravate it.

DS1 is pale and white-blonde and has no capacity to tan, it keeps him safe in even super-hot places. They do a children's one, too, but none of them we've tried so far aggravate DS1's eczema.

I think the rule of thumb is to multiply the SPF factor of your sunscreen by how many minutes it would take for you to burn in the sun. Someone correct me if I'm wrong! Heard it on QI.

So if I were to burn in five minutes in the sun with no protection, the SPF 50 should keep me protected for around 4 hours. Although I'd likely reapply before then.

How sensitive is his skin? And how long/often are they exposed to the sun at school?

Are you in the Uk? Personally I would hate to stick factor 50 on my children whilst at school all day, usually sticky and causes more damage such as heat rash, blocked pores. If it's that hot the children won't be out in it long enough so I wouldn't stress too much. Just put some on in the morning and it will be fine. Also recommend P20, lasts all day and relatively light on the skin.

Aldi have calypso once a day factor 20 for £4 I think. It's amazing. As good as Piz buin, better than p20 - I burned with that!

P20 is very greasy and marks all clothing brown. The Soltan Once is better but the all day ones do tend to mark.

Agree P20 can stain and not great smell, it's great for my kids though who suffer with skin rashes with anything too gloopy!

I googled Boots all day sun cream and came up with the nonI looked up all day long sun cream

and I got the one'd already bought, which is not all day and is not Boots!

He won't be doing a lot of water play at school but he might be doing some sweating.

I've found P20 factor 50 for £20, that seems OK.

It does say it in the description (once a day) but not in it's name. It's also very expensive. Of course DS is worth it.But it is just a shock £26! Plus we are no where near an M and S.

I just feel a bit annoyed because learning to put on sun cream is a perfectly normal activity and the teacher doesn't want them to do it in class in case they share sun cream!

Plus, 'Which' says 'stay away from once a day sun creams!

Check out the latest Which report into sunblocks. Dh and I both use p20 but Which almost failed it and don't recommend it.
They advise against all day sunblocks too, like the Australians

RE "How sensitive is his skin? And how long/often are they exposed to the sun at school?" He is fair and the breaks are quite short, mid morning, and then lunchtime. I don;t think they go out in the afternoon and pick up is just after 3.00.

Yes, he has a sunhat. He can't re-appy as they don't want them using sunscreen in case they share.

I suffer from heat rash but found P20 stopped this but it does stain clothes. I use it only when abroad and accept I will have to throw stained clothes away but it does last all day.

This is all useful research as we are off to France in the summer and it was very hot last time we were there and in and out of water a lot so I will put all this advice to good use.
