To think that smoking in a cafe garden is selfish?

cupkakesandkittens · 06/06/2016 17:38

I was in a cafe for lunch earlier, beautiful weather so sat in the garden at the back to eat, and there were a few people smoking as they ate/drank.
I understand that it's an outdoor space, and it's legal, but to smoke in such close proximity to other people who are enjoying a meal, is just selfish.
I also understand that I could have sat inside, but I didn't want to sit inside on such a nice day.
It just really irritates me, can they not last 30 mins or an hour without a fag?

*and the overeaters?

MumOnACornishFarm · 07/06/2016 18:46

The OP doesn't win though, do they fat, because smoking outdoors is still perfectly legal. And it's not exclusively smokers saying YABU.

EllenDegenerate · 07/06/2016 18:47

Smokers are the societal equivalent of the guests of Jeremy Kyle.

Even the most ineffectual cunt gets to look down on them.

MumOnACornishFarm · 07/06/2016 18:48

WTAF???

caroldecker · 07/06/2016 18:49

For those saying 18% is rare, just be aware that only 13% of the UK population is non-white. So you are more likely to know/come across a smoker than a non-white person.

candykane25 · 07/06/2016 18:56

And?

fatandold · 07/06/2016 18:57

Cornish the "it's legal" argument has been already argued as bollocks on this thread. It's about harm, reasonableness, and choice. Just because it might not be illegal doesn't mean it is not dangerous to others.

I think there are tax and political reasons for this being the case.

EllenDegenerate · 07/06/2016 18:57

Says more about the ineffectual cunt really doesn't it?

SaucyJack · 07/06/2016 19:00

Lots of people don't dispute that passive smoking might be harmful to others.

We just dispute that if you choose to sit on the private property of someone who allows other to engage in a perfectly legal activity, then you should have the right to expect them to stop.

Because you don't- and that's all there is to it really. Your personal preference doesn't come into it.

Longtime · 07/06/2016 19:03

I can't wait until smoking is banned completely. I spent my childhood breathing in second hand smoke and hated it. As someone said up thread, it's not that we were less "sanctimonious", we just didn't have a choice. My DF has stage III lung cancer. It's inoperable because the tumour has started to erode the spine. Despite masses of pain medication, he is still in enormous pain and I hate seeing him like it. Cigarettes, I hate the fucking things.

MumOnACornishFarm · 07/06/2016 19:08

Of course there are political reasons. But all of this is irrelevant because it's legal! No point in bitching about it. You don't like it. You think it smells. You believe it's harmful. You might think anyone who smokes is a c*. All irrelevant. Lobby your MP, leave law abiding smokers alone. I am a non-smoker, for clarity.

Jelliedeels · 07/06/2016 19:47

Is like to know where the OP has gone . Was this just to provoke Hmm

PlentyOfPubeGardens · 07/06/2016 19:59

I have read it fat and I agree the funding is problematic. I'm not sure how 'flawed' or 'limited' it is overall though. Debate has raged around that ever since its publication. You might prefer this one which was commissioned by WHO.

There is a lot of policy-based evidence-making in tobacco control, as there is across public health, and there are a lot of scientists whose future funding depends upon them producing 'useful' results. It can be very hard to get a clear picture.

I'm sure there are some harms from being around indoor smokers long term, however I believe those harms have been overstated - maybe with the best of intentions. After all, smoking kills 100,000 people in the UK every year and half of all long-term smokers will lose, on average, a decade of life because of their habit. An argument could be made that lying to people is morally OK if it will save their life.

I do not believe there are any significant harms to being around someone who is smoking outdoors. If you have any evidence I'd be happy to look at it.

caroldecker · 08/06/2016 01:06

Lying to people from scientists is very dangerous because it destroys trust in the scientific method and leads to vaccine withdrawal and rejection of things like golden rice, which condemn millions to blindness and death.
Scientists should never lie, or they should call themselves soothsayers.

Tezza1 · 08/06/2016 01:58

various smells are not.

I have had to change carriages on a crowded train because the smell of perfume was provoking an asthma attack.

ScoutandAtticus · 08/06/2016 06:11

Yanbu. DH and I moved indoors yesterday at a pub due to this. We just wanted to eat our lunch in the sunshine but couldn't stand the minging smell of second hand smoke. Yes it's legal, bit that doesn't make it right. Anywhere where people are trying to eat or drink should be smoke free. The joke of it is, the pub garden is opposite a green so making the garden smoke free bit offering somewhere for smokers to go would be easy. It amazes me that such a selfish and intrusive choice , never mind health risk to others , is still tolerated anywhere.

Tezza1 · 08/06/2016 06:16

I'm glad someone appreciates my comedy gold Buckin
Cold, are you channelling Niles Crain? - "Seal who came to Dinner"
(Tried to put in a wink, but am lacking in the skills to know how to do it successfully. Need a cig to sharpen my brain)

Jelliedeels · 08/06/2016 09:00

Scout - The joke of it is, the pub garden is opposite a green so making the garden smoke free bit offering somewhere for smokers to go would be easy.

Yeah cause no one would complain then either Hmm

ScoutandAtticus · 08/06/2016 15:04

I see what you mean Jellie but the green was when we were there. it's also an open space so your not forced in close proximity to a smoker and food is not served there.

toadworthy · 08/06/2016 15:06

YANBU. It's horribly rude to smoke near people.

Jelliedeels · 08/06/2016 15:07

Scout - how many threads do you see where people are moaning about smoking on

Green areas
Parks
Outside buildings

Anywhere we go there are always people moaning.

MangoMoon · 08/06/2016 15:47

There's not many places for smokers to smoke now.

So YABU to go to an area where it's permitted, and then whinge about people doing it.

AugustaFinkNottle · 08/06/2016 16:02

There's not many places for smokers to smoke now

What a shame.

It's not a compulsory activity. You can give it up, improve your health, smell better, and save money at the same time! And then you won't have to worry about finding a place to do it in. Complete win-win.

Jelliedeels · 08/06/2016 16:04

Augusta - or people should let others do what they are want without always moaning.

expatinscotland · 08/06/2016 16:15

'You can give it up, improve your health, smell better, and save money at the same time! And then you won't have to worry about finding a place to do it in. Complete win-win.'

Or they can just not letting moaning minnies bother them when they're engaging in a legal activity on private property that allows them to do so.
