To think that smoking in a cafe garden is selfish?

I was in a cafe for lunch earlier, beautiful weather so sat in the garden at the back to eat, and there were a few people smoking as they ate/drank.
I understand that it's an outdoor space, and it's legal, but to smoke in such close proximity to other people who are enjoying a meal, is just selfish.
I also understand that I could have sat inside, but I didn't want to sit inside on such a nice day.
It just really irritates me, can they not last 30 mins or an hour without a fag?

Well, if that's the case, and you are fat as your name suggests, it's probably best you channel all that hostility into some exercise, since being fat can also give you cancer.

expatinscotland · 07/06/2016 14:15

And all that rage can't be good for your blood pressure, either.

SaucyJack · 07/06/2016 14:16

So don't go and sit in a smoke-friendly garden if you're that bovvered about passive smoking then.

Job done.

callherwillow · 07/06/2016 14:16

It doesn't give others cancer though expat. Believe me I am fat and want to lose some, but I still can't agree it's comparable to smoking. I'm sympathetic to the addiction and if pandora, derek and so on had said 'you know, I am addicted and I'm sorry but I can't stop' I'd understand and sympathise but I have to admit the arrogance has annoyed me. And aren't you quite young derek?

fatandold · 07/06/2016 14:17

Oh and brand if i ever visit your pub and you laughed when I asked you to stop poisoning me, I would respond with a bucket of water to put your fag out. It's an assault either way. obviously not but I can fantasise about throwing buckets of water over selfish smokers' heads

GabsAlot · 07/06/2016 14:18

if its outside and the business allows it nothing you can do

does everyone moan about car pulltion whist theyre out aswll-no its never brought up

im vaping now but even when im done i have no prob with smokers in open air its their right

expatinscotland · 07/06/2016 14:19

So where is the evidence, call, of people getting cancer from sitting in pub/cafe gardens where smokers are present?

fatandold · 07/06/2016 14:21

Thanks for the health advice expat and all the assumptions about me. From a self-confessed smoking addict prone to getting and giving cancer. You do make me laugh.

expatinscotland · 07/06/2016 14:26

'From a self-confessed smoking addict prone to getting and giving cancer. '
I'm an ex-smoker. It must be awful to go round in life so full of hate and rage, fantasizing about committing criminal acts on strangers.

ArmfulOfRoses · 07/06/2016 14:28

As someone up thread said, you wanted us outside, so outside we are .
Or something like that.

Petition local businesses if it offends you that much but as long as I can smoke in public spaces by law, I will.

Sprink · 07/06/2016 14:32

Sprink I know perfectly well what restricting means thank you.

Fair enough, but you used it incorrectly.

Non-smokers should be able to go inside or outside a pub/cafe without being affected by smokers.

The law doesn't agree with you.

BrandNewAndImproved · 07/06/2016 14:33

Fatandold even if you don't drive and catch buses or trains with your dc your upping their risk of cancer. A random fag in a cafes garden isn't anything in the grand scheme of things.

I'd also like to see you try and fight me, I'm good at fighting it's my hobby

Anyhoo you've given me a right laugh with your indignation on this thread.

SantanaBinLorry · 07/06/2016 14:40

It was me that said smoking looked cool, it was a joke! James Dean anyone?
Some people need to chill out a bit.

poisoned!! hahahahaha.

caroldecker · 07/06/2016 14:40

It's not the law that is at issue here, but the policy of the cafe/pub/restaurant. They choose to allow smoking outdoors, presumably because they think it will get them more profit from smokers and don't cares than from the rabid nutters against smoking.
All you do is vote with your pocket and only go to those places with non-smoking outdoor spaces. If you can't find any, then the country obviously thinks YABU.

Sallystyle · 07/06/2016 14:42

I might hate people smoking around me, but no fucking way will I stop vaping in gardens.

If the smell of my lovely liquorice and fruit vape makes you feel ill then that's just too bad. I don't blow big clouds of vape like my brother and you will only get a small hint of sweet stuff if you are sitting close enough.

SaucyJack · 07/06/2016 14:48

There are admittedly very few places that ban smoking outside- but that's quite simply because it isn't financially viable for smaller businesses to pay year-round ground rents on gardens/terraces that people will realistically only want to use for a couple of months in the summer unless they are forced outside by their dirty nicotine habit.

The only places I can think of that have smoke-free outsides tend to be national chains that run cafes as part of much bigger shopping centres (Wyevale and M&S spring to mind).

Would the anti-smokers prefer;

Paying higher prices all year round?
Banning smoking once the temperature hits 22*C?
Or to not have a garden at all so that no one can enjoy it out of spite?

Cos those are your options.

WeAllHaveWings · 07/06/2016 15:44

The options you are presenting are ridiculous.

The fairest and most reasonable option is during the seasonal times when there is outdoor eating on offer smoking is banned from that area and there is either a separate seating area for smokers, or they go to a smoking area when they want to smoke after eating.

It is not unreasonable to not want to smell cigarette smoke while eating a meal.

Gosh did no-one here live through the 70's or 80's? I had to endure second hand smoke in cars, cinemas, restaurants, buses and even planes. I think non-smokers today have it pretty cushy in comparison. Yes the smell is unpleasant but unless you're getting blowbacks from the smokers around you someone smoking near you outside is unlikely to impact on your health.

Jelliedeels · 07/06/2016 15:59

Fat - maybe you should start. Might chill you out.

Or at least start drinking -

And the Fishwife language and dose not make you sound rational makes you sound like a silly 10 year old on the bus trying to impress their mates

thedogdaysareover · 07/06/2016 16:02

I wouldn't smoke in a cafe garden around kids. But if I am outside the pub then families can bugger off.

BigPurpleCake · 07/06/2016 16:03

I have never ever smoked. But my vote is YABU. Smokers are allowed to smoke outside! It's not so horrible. Unless they are actually blowing it in your face, it's just a tiny smell. You're overreacting.

DinosaursRoar · 07/06/2016 16:05

CaseInPoint - true, but to an extent, smoke smells were a part of normal life, the way the world smelt. As over 80% of the adult popluation don't smoke and indoor public spaces are smoke free, it's not something most people experience anymore. Smoking has gone from being a normal part of most people's lives to being rare thing to experience for most people.

I suppose if you are part of the 18% of adults who are smokers and so are many of your family, then it might seem like 'normal' behaviour, but it really isn't anymore.

expatinscotland · 07/06/2016 16:12

'The fairest and most reasonable option is during the seasonal times when there is outdoor eating on offer smoking is banned from that area and there is either a separate seating area for smokers, or they go to a smoking area when they want to smoke after eating.'

But you're free to eat outside in the cafe or pub garden all year round, it's not 'seasonal'. Smokers and non-smokers are free to eat outside in all seasons if they'd like unless the cafe or pub closes the garden to eating except in Summer.

And this is about profit for the cafe or pub, not about what you think it 'fair' or 'reasonable'. If they don't think this separate area for smokers in 'seasonal' times justifies the cost to them (they may also not have the space) then they don't/won't do it.
