To think that smoking in a cafe garden is selfish?

I was in a cafe for lunch earlier, beautiful weather so sat in the garden at the back to eat, and there were a few people smoking as they ate/drank.
I understand that it's an outdoor space, and it's legal, but to smoke in such close proximity to other people who are enjoying a meal, is just selfish.
I also understand that I could have sat inside, but I didn't want to sit inside on such a nice day.
It just really irritates me, can they not last 30 mins or an hour without a fag?

I smoke and I smoke in cafe/beer gardens too. Although I tend not to if it's busy and will move away to smoke but what really rankles me (and it happens at least twice every summer) is when I find myself a nice, quiet little corner of the garden, with a table. No other patrons nearby, happily sit myself down to start killing myself slowly and then a non smoker chooses to sit next to me and cough all over me!

Fuck off to the other side of the garden you joy sucking wanker!

One thing I do not miss is the time I dropped my last one in a puddle and all the shops were shut. I cried a little

When I smoked I was so embarrassed about it! I used to sneak well away from other people. YANBU.

SemiNormal · 07/06/2016 01:22

YABU

Several studies suggest that oxygen is carcinogenic, perhaps the pearl clutchers and offspring would like to move up into the mountains where the oxygen level is lower to decrease the risk of getting lung cancer? or perhaps just stay here and moan like fuck that the oxygen has the nerve to be at a higher level where you are.

Lillygolightly · 07/06/2016 01:57

I am now a non smoker

To whoever said smoking is not a right...er I hate to correct you, but yes it is!! It's a right, and it's a freedom of choice and entirely legal. Just as it is a choice to have a glass of wine or 3 😋 Eat a massive cake or be healthy an have an apple.

When I was a smoker I had the common courtesy to smoke outdoors and away from children etc etc. But you'd have been dammed if on a weekend sunny day and I'm sat out in the beer garden of a pub having a few glasses of vino enjoying the sun and having a cigarette that I'd even be remotely bothered about what anyone else thought. It's legal to enjoy it's my right to enjoy it and anyone who is offended by it has the freedom and choice to move away from me.

For what it's worth since I gave up several years ago I can't stand the smell of smoke and I keep myself away from it as and where possible. I absolutely do not expect others to consider my feelings on the matter in area where smoking is not restricted. I think its a little like asking the whole world to hide chocolate because your on a diet. However filthy and disgusting a persons habit does not make you above them or more important just because you don't share it!!

Namelessbabe · 07/06/2016 02:06

Augusta hear hear! Your post is bang on.

StopLookingAtMyAccount · 07/06/2016 02:25

YANBU - I can't stand the smell of smoke. I think it's the cafes fault though - they should just ban any smoking inside or out.

kali110 · 07/06/2016 03:05

voddiekeepsmesane then the non smokers
Need To not be territorial.
Nobody owns the outside.
There is no law currently that says smokers can't smoke outside of cafes/pubs.
I have asthma and hate the smell of smoke yet wouldn't want it banned!
People campaigned to get pubs and restaurants to be smoke free ( which i wasfor) but now people are still not happy?
Yes people could forgo the cigarette for the time it took to have a meal/drink ( some may not be able to) but why should they?
they have every right to be outside.
I certainly wouldn't want them banned from everywhere.

honkinghaddock · 07/06/2016 05:48

If a cafe is allowing smokers to smoke in their outside eating area then it is reasonable for a smoker to smoke there. If you don't want to be around smokers go to a cafe that doesn't allow it. We sit outside a lot due to ds preferring it and most people are reasonable. If we are there first, the smoker chooses one of the tables further away from us and vice versa.

sandrabedminster · 07/06/2016 06:00

Yanbu. I complained about people smoking in a clearly designated no smoking area at a bus stop outside a station and I was inundated by people saying I'm unreasonable and its fine to smoke in the no smoking area as its not legally in for cable Biscuit

"Coldlight good suggestion but how about the other way round?

Smokers go outside in summer, non-smokers get to go outside in winter. Then we can all see how the other half live"

This is almost what it used to be like but with the exception that in summer the smokers would come in and light up.

AugustaFinkNottle's post at 23:21:22 has it right.

Resideria · 07/06/2016 07:02

YANBU.
Why would anyone think it's OK to impose their unhealthy, stinking cigarette smoke onto others? Well, I suppose that would be someone who thinks it's OK later down the line to let everyone else pay for treatment of their self-inflicted lung cancer - completely unnecessary.

Arkwright · 07/06/2016 07:07

Sprink I know perfectly well what restricting means thank you. Non-smokers should be able to go inside or outside a pub/cafe without being affected by smokers.

ApostrophesMatter · 07/06/2016 07:20

Why would anyone think it's OK to impose their unhealthy, stinking cigarette smoke onto others?

Because it's legal. A lot of antisocial activities are inflicted on others by participants the rest of us have to suck it up and stop whining.

SaucyJack · 07/06/2016 07:35

"Non-smokers should be able to go inside or outside a pub/cafe without being affected by smokers."

Why should you?

It's up to the cafe owner whether they're OK to smoke outside- not you.

I don't smoke myself either, but some of you anti-smokers really need to get over yourselves.

Resideria · 07/06/2016 07:41

Because it's legal. A lot of antisocial activities are inflicted on others by participants the rest of us have to suck it up and stop whining.

It's also legal to heavily smoke and drink during pregnancy. Does that make it OK?

sandrabedminster · 07/06/2016 08:23

Grin that slayed them!

Buckinbronco · 07/06/2016 08:26

Well it's bit about making it ok is it? It's just not relevant

MumOnACornishFarm · 07/06/2016 08:34

That's completely irrelevant to this thread. For starters their drinking and outdoor smoking doesn't really impact on you, it impacts on them and their baby. Rightly or wrongly a baby is not legally seen as a person until birth, but that's a whole other debate.

I am an ex-smoker, but I now hate the smell of smoke and would go out of my way to avoid it, especially when I'm with my DS. But it's legal, so tough luck. YABU, go inside or pick another cafe.

seasidesally · 07/06/2016 09:05

well ive have never heard of a smoker having a few extra ciggies while out at the pub socialising acting a twat and getting into arguments and fights

on the other hand cant say the same for a few extra drinks of alcohol when people are far more antisocial and cause fights, arguments etc

ciggies dont change your mood (im talking normal ciggies) and turn you into a pain in the arse at best, alcohol can and does

Jelliedeels · 07/06/2016 09:07

Sit inside or go to a cafe that is no smoking outside.

Leave us smokers to go to the ones we can smoke in in peace !

The pregnancy smoking is completely unrelated

bluetongue · 07/06/2016 09:36

YANBU. Some of us hate smokers lighting up around us not because we don't like the smell of because we enjoy being smug but because we are extremely sensitive and it makes us sick.

I was holidaying in Japan earlier in the year and had coughing fits to the point of nearly throwing up a number of times due to smoking being allowed in some restaurants there.

I live in South Australia and the government here is bringing in no smoking for outside dining areas as of first of October. Can't wait for some outside meals once the weather gets warmer without dodging smoke
