Completely by accident... DP was in the bathroom getting ready for bed, he'd left his phone in the bedroom with the radio on. A song came on that I really hate by Ellie Goulding so I opened his phone to switch stations, and it opened on a whatsapp chat he was having with my best friend, where he'd sent her photos of the engagement ring he's just bought.

I feel so bad that I know this! And to make matters worse I had to keep the radio on the same bloody song so he wouldn't know I'd seen!

It was actually completely random! I'd finished work late, came home, had a bath, watched the referendum questions thing on TV... then we were just lying on the bed being soppy and I was telling him all the things I love him more than (which included Thai calamari, pistachio ice cream and tea)... and then he said I love you more than anything, and I said no fair I gave you a list, and then he said ok, do you want to know how much I love you?
Got up... rummaged around in the wardrobe for a few seconds... came back with the box in his hand and asked me to marry him

And I giggled like a loon and said 'go on then!'

And then he remembered he hadn't got on one knee, so we got up off the bed, he knelt down and proposed again

I found the receipt for my engagement ring in dps jeans pocket on Christmas Eve as I was doing some washing. I put the jeans back in the basket and was still surprised on the day! 12 years later, we still aren't married, the ring still lives in the box (don't like wearing jewellery) and he still doesn't know that I ever knew about it.

I more or less guessed that my DH was going to propose on the day he did - his behaviour gave him away. Still blew my socks off & had done a lot more organising than I ever imagined, including getting the restaurant in on it, ringing my Dad from the USA (we were on hols) & buying a 'dummy ring' to actually propose with.. It was amazing.
