To wonder how anyone gets their washing dry in this weather?

Boring subject so sorry! But I am genuinely wondering. I did a load about two days ago and I've just had to redo it as it wasn't drying and was starting to smell musty. I have a tumble dryer but it can't be used on everything. The heating is on full blast and it still isn't drying! When it's a nice sunny day I can all my washing including bedding done all in the same day.

It has been very damp in general, even with the heating on here. I find individual hangers work better than a clothes horse and get them as high up as you can. I use door frames, curtain rails etc. But I mostly tumble dry, even in high summer, apart from bedding and delicates.

Dehumidifier working its magic here, too. And gently heating the room with its warm air output. Win win.

Fluffyears · 01/06/2016 20:00

I live in a flat so can't use an outside line. Put washing on an surer in a room with a dehumidifier. The dehumidifier helps things like towels dry overnight.

Thankfulforeveryday · 01/06/2016 20:02

Heated airer!!

BillBrysonsBeard · 01/06/2016 20:04

We just use an airer in a very light room, dries nicely!

Windsofwinter · 01/06/2016 20:09

I tumble dry everything. Mine has loads of settings for different things (including minimum iron Wink ). I hate the way clothes go stiff on the radiator, washing line came down as I never used it.

RavioliOnToast · 01/06/2016 21:05

Our garden backs out onto a metro track, I tumble dry absolutely EVERYTHING- if I don't, it get dirty from the trains Cxx

Atm I'm living in London and it was nice until Monday then it started bucketing it down. We are moving to West Midlands soon (I'm originally from East Midlands). Our house has a fair bit of damp and this stupid vertical radiator so I have to put the airer on top of a table against it! I don't remember it ever taking this long anywhere else I've lived. Most things I try to tumble dry when I'm unable to line dry it but some stuff it says on the labels not to. A couple of my dresses for work, trousers, dad's clothes (primark, h&m). Gap jeans I think shrink a bit or maybe I had too high a setting. I'm jealous of people who don't have to iron. It's a condenser dryer so I think it's quite a tough one on clothes. A lot of fluff comes out of it. I'm trying to do smaller loads so it washes better, smells better and I don't have to dry as much in one go.

We tumble dry everything - everyday all year round. We had a washing line when we moved in but had it taken down.

Minispringroll · 01/06/2016 21:44

I put our washing outside. Hmm The weather has been fine, quite warm and since we are on the coast also quite windy.
Meant that I've managed to wash and dry three duvets and two pillows in two days. Duvets were washed in the morning and went back on the bed (dry) in the evening. Pillows took a little longer.

If it starts to rain, we put the washing into the conservatory. (We've got two airers that can be moved from garden to conservatory in seconds.) Never had a tumble dryer....but then, we also didn't have a dishwasher until a few years ago and I've been without a microwave since I moved out of my parents' house 15 years ago.

afromom · 01/06/2016 21:51

We have a Dri-buddy it has changed my washing habits! Only £60 and everything - jeans included - drys in under 3 hours. It's cheaper to run than a tumble dryer and can be collapsed down when the weather is nicer and the washing line can be used.

Afromom I want one! That video made me laugh though! I love how the woman is drying the washing and smelling it and the man is trying to put the airer together! Seriously though they look really good

Inside. With a window open for air circulation. Takes 24h after a good spin in this dampish weather.

Unicorn1981 · 01/06/2016 22:53

Just read my previous post back. That should say dd's clothes and not dads!

Move to Glasgow. It's been bloody boiling here, so hot in fact I've been washing things for the sake of it.

Not helpful.

badg3r · 01/06/2016 23:14

We're in London too and had exactly the same problem. Get a dehumidifier. Our airer of clothes is now dry in 12h. The flat smells so much better. The heating warms us up much faster. No condensation in winter. Without wanting to sound melodramatic it was pretty life changing!!

afromom · 01/06/2016 23:29

It is amazing unicorn! The video made me laugh too.

JapanNextYear · 02/06/2016 07:14

Longest run of good weather we've had in years here, north west. Put up the washing line that's been sitting in its box for 3 years!

newmumwithquestions · 02/06/2016 07:23

Dehumidifier here. I never wanted one. OH bought one anyway. I think it's ruddy amazing.
Standard washing rack in front of it. Jeans dry overnight.

ssd · 02/06/2016 08:22

what dehumidifier do you all use?

and the dri buddi from JML above, are they expensive to run?

afromom · 02/06/2016 14:01

Not expensive to run, cheaper than the tumble dryer. And holds more than the dryer too. I would have thought it is similar to a heated airer cost wise, but quicker.

Thornrose · 02/06/2016 14:10

Yes to the dehumidifier. I use a hanging rack and also hang sheets and duvet covers on the shower rail. Close bathroom door leave over night, job done.

BareBearBum · 03/06/2016 14:46

I'd also like to know what dehumidifier anyone can recommend?

parmalilac · 03/06/2016 14:57

We have a Delonghi dehumidifier from John Lewis, 200 watts so cheap to run.
